music: shortened version of "By this river" by Brian Eno, adapted and recorded by Anna-Maria Hefele
What you see in this dynamic MRI-recording is the tongue movement in the vocal tract while doing overtone singing. The positions of the tongue forms the resoncance cavities which delete all not-wanted overtones in the sound of the voice at a certain point in time, and then amplify a single overtone that is left, which can be heard as a seperate note above the fundamental.
The MRI recordings were made by Prof. Dr. Bernhard Richter, Prof. Dr. Matthias Echternach and Dr.- Ing. Michael Burdumy in the University Medical Center Freiburg, Institute for Musician's Medicine.
www.mh-freiburg... - thank you so much for the kind permission to use the MRI-footage in order to share this fascinating singing-insight with the world!
The team of doctors in Freiburg developed a highly specialized equipment for recording and and also filtering sound in the MRI-machine. This recording is made while using a pre-produced playback on headphones in the really loud MRI-machine while lying on the back.
A lot of more of very interesting MRI- and endoscopy- recordings of various singers and vocalists (classical singers, overtone singers, yodellers, beatboxers....) are published on a DVD @ Helbling.

We, doctors, never have a good explanation for sinuses (empty cavities inside the bones of your skull). This video is showing one of the possible reasons. Stunning, the song, the performer and the film.
@AnnaMariaHefele
@AnnaMariaHefele 7 жыл бұрын
how do you mean that? what is the possible reason for havigng bone cavities? I mean, they don't play that big role for resonance etc, as they are from bone and you cannot move that to modify resonance chambers, so everything with what I work is in the vocal tract, not bone cavities...
@DaGrybo
@DaGrybo 7 жыл бұрын
What I mean is that sinuses wouldn't be built this way if not the need to resonate during the course of evolution. They never had to be so large in humans. It's difficult to measure their resonance, like it's difficult to say why one face is prettier than the other. Here are case reports showing how important sinuses are to give a pleasant spectrum of voice, and your voice is beautiful - pantherfile.uwm.edu/wmkeith/www/SinusesMerry.pdf

This has near all of my special interests. The incredible music, the framerate of the camera maging the strings on the instrument look all cool, and the MRI scan showing exactly what's going on. The only thing this video needs is a puppy and it'd be specifically pandering to me.

MRI was once my specialty and I installed and repaired many installations back in the day. The imaging sequences have advanced far if this body of work is possible. Could you share the field strength of the magnet and about whether this was a real time playback? I love Anna'a wonderful singing and thank you for your cooperation in this epic work.
