Hello friends in this video I have made a heavy duty CNC router using NEMA23 stepper motor with GRBL firmware and custom PCB shield.
I have used 10mm MS laser cut frame to build this CNC router it also have 500W spindle.

Man, that's a beautiful build, even the way you've set up the electronics, with everything clean and tidy. That's what I call a perfectionist's build.

it needs another piece of 2040 in the middle under the bed to tie it all together and to stop any push down above, on my version of this I have a piece of 8mm tapped aluminium for this bed and that is screwed down into the extrusion in on all 4 sides, its as rigid as it can gets now, finally it needs a brace across the two X axis 2040 extrusions , doing that makes X and Z very rigid. I used a piece of stainless steel that I had for this at 3mm thick. It makes a big difference now. Once final thing is I have the entire machine bolted down on a large desk which is heavy and has a thick counter on it made of a piece of granite. I then built a full enclosure which goes over it and keeps the noise down by about 30% and because I use a 1.5 kw VFD water spindle it is loud but very fast and accurate , mine also has ball screws rather than lead screws. its worth the extra cost which is not that much to be honest and helps to reduce backlash by quite a bit. My extrusion is bolted together rather than using corners which are fairly useless, simply drill through, counter bore and tap the end of the other piece with M5 allen heads. If you look closely in the video this was put together for speed of the video and most bolts and screws are missing. There are also some steps missing, you do not need to use the controller tin this video, any small grbl controller will work but you might need driver amplifiers.

Great job, very professional wire routing with the din rail connector points. I had extected to see some din rail breakers for the stepper drivers but maybe they've got them built in.

Nice video...Sir please make a video on higher/improved performance CNC machine something like laser cutting.. I mean all the mechanical parts should be easily available in market and there shouldn't be no 3D parts ( not everyone can make 3d parts, so implementations by viewers will be tough without all parts).

How well will this cut aluminium and brass ?? I'm interested in making this as the old Mach 3 3018 I have is not really up to it, it does do it but very slowly and it suffers from chatter and backlash, this has much stronger supports, linear rails etc so I would expect it to fair a lot better I need to mill brass and copper in small runs. thanks

Really nice design well done - may I make a suggestion for even better rigidity? The rigidity in the X travel could be greatly improved by putting a web between the upper and lower black extrusions atm the gantry can flex creating a parallelogram shape

basically stick a piece of metal on the back of the two X extrusion bars that way it will be more rigid, either a whole sheet the width of the CNC and between the centres of the two extrusion bars. so about 500 mm wide by the height....dead easy, its already quite stiff but that will make it very stiff @@sanjaybatra6593

google, tons of programs out there, most free. The question you should be asking is how , calculating them is easy ,machining them is another deal all together especially if they are in metals but this machine should be able to do that reasonably easy asper thevideo, just takes longer with metals.

i dont know if his controller supports a laser but a new controller that does isonly about 50 euros,. its a easy swap and replace to do that and then this machine can run a drop in laser as well as the spindle, if however you are just interested in lasers then buy a ready made laser kit as it will be very cheap compared to building this. Its a semi pro CNC that I expect will be able cut steel which is the holy grail of CNC cutting machines, aluminium, brass and copper and finally all woods will be effortless with this machine. Its super over engineered.

THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO and some good ideas. I got a 3018 6 moths ago and I would recommended anyone to get one to start with as it is a cheap way to get into CNC routing. I found that I really like it but I now would like a bigger machine (only with a work area of 500mm X 500mm) so I am designing my own. As the ones you can buy cost too much. Like the idea of using threaded bar all the way thought the aluminium extrusion. Like the idea of two motors for the "Y" axis. I was thinking of using 20mm rail NOT 15? I will have to look at the different now? going to use HSK only because there is a supplier about 8 km from me. using a belt on the Z Axis is a great idea as it save on the Hight of the machine. why did you use Mild Steel and not Aluminium? steel is stronger but Aluminium is light and I thought it would be OK for something this size? Thought you might of used Ball Screws instead of Acme Threaded Rod?
@sitgesvillaapartmentneilsc7924
@sitgesvillaapartmentneilsc7924 9 ай бұрын
steel frame makes it super rigid unlike a 3018 which is really only good for light wood and soft plastic, it causes chatter because it has steel rods instead of linear rails. this cnc will almost certainly be able to mill steel. it is that strong, aluminium brass and copper will be a breeze, if you are thinking of building one use this and change lead screws to ball screws and buy a different controller and it will work very well. I build small cnc's for a living and this is one of the best I have found to base my designs on. Its not the cheapest but for around 700 euros you can buy all the kit and have a 3000 plus machine that will cut almost anything I would imagine.

750 to 1000 usd for something like this with a good mill and controller, you need a palm router or a VFD water cooled spindle , I costed it to around 600 euro plus the controller and VFD takes it to a grand. if you use a router then take 300 off but it will be very noisy....this I am sure can cut steel , it needs stiffening in places and mounting on a solid desk and it works very well....
