It's only effective if you can do it with your alt as well. Also with single player the odds of getting a legendary chest are 25%(?) and getting a green (which sucks) is also a possibility. Ultimately you want full afk for 4 players but as long as you can carry your alt, it's all day long.

I always bring my alt in at the last 20 or so enemies at wave 5. Still gets the chest.

Indie game develoepr here. The way you'd do this is using an anti-cheat (if they had/have one). Theoretically they could track small things like player positioning and player orientation (facing direction). It's possible to check historically if the player exhibits EXACT repetitive motions then it's likely they are using automation of some sort. Also, there are a billion other things you could look for to help ensure you don't detect false positives, most of it involves checking the computer memory for known exploits or cheats much like an anti-virus does when scanning your computer for viruses or malware. End rant.
