Did this successfully today. I have done it with relative success in past but your two tips really helped. Marking the lock with magic marker so you know where to work is key. Then using a dremel to file down the strike plate is huge time saver. I used a file in the past but the dremel makes short work of it. Thanks mang!

I did customer service for many years with a large construction company. I figured out that message many years ago by marking the bolt with white caulking then letting the boat hit the striker plate and then trimming the striker plate appropriately. In some cases I actually had to remove the striker plate and trim the wood behind it and then put the striker plate back but I always got it to work smoothly.

I used the bacon grease on my deadbolt and it slides even smoother😜 Before Dremels we used to put the ball end of a ball peen hammer against the strike plate and wallop the flat face with a rubber mallet and it would open up the hole so the dead bolt fit looser.

Those burrs come in many shapes and sizes, also bits especially made for aluminum (coarse don't clog) as well. I don't have a Dremel and those burrs take metal off very fast. Usually used in an air operated die grinder but since i didn't have it or a compressor at her house, the drill worked fine.

@@MrKnowItAllGuru Another thing to try is, turning the plunger in and out while pressing in against the door, pulling the door handle toward you, pulling the door handle up and pushing the door handle down. If one of those exercises eliminates the plunger rubbing, you will know where it's rubbing. Example: Pulling up on the door handle allows the plunger to flow smoothly - Therefore the plunger/frame plate is impacting at the bottom of the plunger/wall plate.

Tap a wooden golf tee into the existing holes then break or cut it off then you can make new holes with a drill without it wanting to go over into the original holes...if you grind off too much "meat" from the plate it would be too thin to survive a kick...

Here's another quick tip: if you DO decide that you want to move the holes slightly left or right, you can just take some matchsticks, cut off the heads then jam, hammer to seat or break them off into the holes that were drilled. then fill with wood glue from a dropper. Now you can drill without worrying about cracking, splitting or the drill bit walking back in and following the original hole.

@@Marcoosianism oh it wasn't so much the bit wanting to go back to the old holes as the screws themselves. The wood of the frame had been cut in a really poor way to create the hole for the lock's bolt (looked like someone missed their mark and decided to use a chisel instead) so even after plugging the old holes the screws would either burst out into the hole for the bolt, or would push the plugs enough to wiggle. Replacing part of the frame was something we considered, but everyone else was dithering about it so I got fed up with it and went to the hardware and fixed it up the best way that I could 😅

I use the Dremel for that kind of thing all the time, it’s a great hack. But now about the bacon, I bake my bacon all the time. It’s the easiest no mess way to go, and the bacon stays flat. The only thing I would recommend is after you put down the aluminum foil, cut a piece of parchment paper and put that over the aluminum foil and lay the bacon on the parchment paper so it’s not touching the aluminum foil. Aluminum foil has one of the highest transfer rates of aluminum to food, especially with that high of a contact. It can lead to Alzheimer’s in the future. Never cook any food in direct contact with aluminum foil. Peace

Lubricate it
@MrKnowItAllGuru4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment, can you please explain to me how lubrication is going to line up the deadbolt pocket with the deadbolt??? If you have a lubrication that will move the deadbolt up 1/8" so it goes smoothly into the pocket, we want to know about this lube because it would be almost magical like maybe this amzn.to/4d2Jys7 . @@MrKnowItAllGuru Didn't mean a lubricant to make any adjustment . Just that I think it best to use whatever kind of lubricant you wanted for metal on metal .

Unfortunately, you have weak strike plates which makes that door easy to kick in. Also, all that glass isn't the best for security either.

Well your comment is not the point of the video...and what I have is better than leaving the door wide open...plus I dont live in fort knox and I have Smith and Wesson items that will be used if some idiot tries to kick in the door.

He says to put your safety glasses on and then proceeds to start grinding with no glasses on! WTF! Also a small fine file will do the same thing almost as fast without any risk of getting metal shavings in your eye!

This is a really poor remedy for the subject problem. The striker plate is poorly installed for a dead bolt and wouldn't be of much use to protect against break ins.

@@MrKnowItAllGuru Are you saying it effectively resisted a forced intrusion? The striker plate issue is about the need for long length screws to extend into the framing such that the jamb doesn't splinter and yield.
