Nice to see that they were doing cutaways from the actual racing to focus on the wife and not the pass for the win, even back in the 80's. A proud and time-honored tradition.

NBC has the coverage now. Lets hope they skip this time wasting tradition of showing the wife and focus on the team not the spouse. The driver and the crew chief are the guys they should be focusing on or the heartbreak of the team in 2nd not the trophy wife.

The determination from the investigation was that the lights are the FINAL piece of information to report a yellow, but the yellow was official before that point. It's not about when the drivers are informed, it's about when the decision is made, and everyone is then instructed to return to the timestamped position.

@@tommystovall2411 He said "Rick" Mears, not Casey Mears. Rick won in 79, 84, 88, and 1991. He had a dominant car in 1979 only for a pit fire to take him out of the race during one of his pit stops. He just missed 1982 to JohnCock, and could've won in 1986 in the shootout with Rahal and Cogan (but realistically he didn't have a great car that day). There were a few other Indys where he was there at the end. If Rick didn't suffer permanent damage to his feet in 1984 at San Air, he would've won a helluva lot more as he was a master road racer up to that point. After 1984 he was only competitive on ovals.

@@701CPD Sorry 701CPD, but you are totally wrong. Those races were called live to tape as they happened. There were no later "voice-overs". I know because I was there working for ABC.

Yep, that was dumb. Showing the WAG on a split screen was stupid also! You can always show a replay of the WAG after the race is over.

My family does a raffle every year and winner has a big prize. I got hildebrand in my first ever race when I was 9 and it was the worst feeling ever when he hit the wall. But at least Dan wheldon could win it RIP.

He was too high going into turn 3 to try to pass whoever was in front of him. And he didn't even need o pass that guy to win. He should have taken it easy in the last two turns. Weldon would never have caught him. Youth & inexperience!!

@@johnconway3834 Lmao he was trying to avoid slowing down for Kimball so Wheldon would not catch up like Hornish did to Andretti in 2006. Hornish managed to catch up at the very end without a lapped car interfering Andretti so imagine how much ground Wheldon would’ve gained with one. That was Kimball’s team’s fault, not JR’s

Hildebrand could've completely let off of the throttle, and Wheldon wouldn't have caught him.....Look how close the finish was, even after Hildebrand hit the wall.....Wheldon was 3 seconds behind when he hit the wall, that's approx. 300 yards

You have to applaud Sato for making that move under Franchitti. In hindsight, he should have waited til off of 2 or off of 4 coming to the line, but you can't fault him for going for it. He did what any real racer would have/should have done in that situation.

The most dramatic portion of the race and how many cut-aways to a wife do we need? Crappy directing. If I watched for hours, that's NOT what i tuned in for.
