I agree. We should learn with chunks, not with single words.

Words without context are useless. Context is everything when translating, so it stands to reason that you need context when learning too.

Just wanted to say danka for the 4 years of class. I flew into Berlin a few days ago and was able to ask for directions to the bus station all in German. Danka, Herr Antrim 🙏

I like the tip of focusing on the most important words. I have an auditory processing disorder so I already have experience using this technique as an English speaker. Now I can just adapt and apply that experience for German.

I’m glad I saw this. I like to learn sentence and change words for different situations. This is exactly what I want to do. And the listening part. I try to just hear some of it and have to remember I don’t need to make out every single world yet.

Exactly. I don't hear every word people say in English and I do just fine. 😂 I'm sure I can do the same with German (and I do).

From my experience so far, you really need massive input to get the vocabulary needed, just for the verbs alone. Here's one verb phrase I took note of while going through a B2 level audio (with text) from a YT video: den inneren Schweinehund überwinden, which I looked up and found it means: to conquer one's weaker self.

Or literally, overcome your inner pigdog. Which is far more colourful.

@hainsey6264 Currently going through the German translation of Antony Beevor's Berlin The Downfall 1945, I noted another interesting verb phrase "Luft machen", which l checked means "to give vent to" . But it's a long slog going through the book.

Lol I've been doing the opposite and I don't even try learning a word until I know it's parts like entschuldigung I had to write down first it's prefix ent and schulds base meaning ect, I assumed that if I couldn't visualize what a word is made up of I wouldn't be able to remember it's meaning
@MrLAntrim

That is not a bad method. This video is specifically talking about making you more fluid and therefore fluent in your speech. If you learn a phrase instead of a single word, you can use the whole phrase in conversation, but only in the context you learned it. If you learn a single word and all of it's nuance, you can use that word in a variety of contexts. Both have their advantages. Beginners, however, (IMHO) are better served by learning phrases than single words. You can figure out the nuance later.

This is unrelated, but I was wondering whether I can watch the video "Master German Grammar in 2024 and Avoid Common Mistakes!" and use the workbook to practice the topics covered in the video without using the main book of the case system. In other words, is the main book specifically tailored towards the workbook, or is the video sufficient on its own to practice the workbook?
@MrLAntrim
@MrLAntrim 2 күн бұрын
You can use the video with the workbook, but you are going to run into a variety of problems. First, I created the video before I finished the book. After I created the video I decided that certain topics needed to be grouped differently. This resulted in the video not having the same order as the book and workbook. Secondly, there are some topics that aren't covered in the video that are in the book. Or topics that aren't covered as deeply in the video as they are in the book. This may make some exercises in the workbook more difficult than it would be otherwise. You can use the timestamps in the video description to jump to the parts covered in the workbook and make the order match. It just isn't the ideal matchup.

You emailed on November 23 and I did not respond before you sent another email on November 25. I responded to that email within an hour of receiving it. My response included new download links in case you couldn't find the ones I already sent you on the day of your purchase. You sent another email this morning claiming fraud. Your email this morning was not in response to the email I sent, but rather to the thread you already started, which tells me you haven't seen my email. I have responded to you. Since you are a Gmail user, the most likely place you will find my emails is not the spam folder, but rather the promotions tab created automatically by Gmail. Unless you specifically tell it not to do that, my emails will continue to land there even if I am responding directly to you. Thank you for posting this here, as it may help you find the solution (and my emails) that I can't get to you via email.
