The thing I find really sad about his music is he’s telling everyone how he’s feeling deep inside as if he’s crying for help. Chester (Linkin Park) done the same with ALL of his songs before he took his life. Everyone enjoyed Linkin Parks music.. but no one listened. Thankfully a lot of people are seeing the message Ren is sending. I love that about today’s society.

Also possibly a reference to The Streets? He starts the section "I'm a geezer on The Streets" and switches into a classic Mike Skinner accent from one of his characters in "Don't Mug Yourself" and Mike has so many geezer songs and characters gotta love him. Geezers Need Excitement is a classic too. Ren has posted in community about how inspiring The Streets is both musically and as a person. He has stated multiple times that when he wrote Hi Ren, which I believe was after the tracks for Sic Boi, Ren was supposed to die. It was supposed to end after the "dark" character took over, and he sat down one day and changed the ending. That one moment of hope, his decision to not succumb to this chaos , then he gave up everything and began the journey to re-claim his health and life, and that is what lead to him achieving the recognition and success he always dreamed of and thought was long since lost.
@spruce381 Жыл бұрын
Didn’t know that. I keep asking myself am I over praising what he’s done, but for me he’s up there with Weller, Specials, Dexys and The Stone Roses. And much more. Up to now, Bowie has been the most creative British solo artist, but Ren is knocking. Ask me last year and I’d have dismissed most new music - delighted I was wrong.

The lyrics on the chorus are all references and names of TV shows. Burn the border (Game of thrones reference - no spoilers) Sons and daughters (TV show) Law and Order (TV show) Crave Disorder (TV show - Seasons of Disorder - a drama/dark comedy series based around a young woman named Abby who balances her various mental conditions with her new job of working in the hospice industry.) Another chronic disease patient suggested elsewhere that REN probably doesn’t mean planning how to leave this world, but planning for the being gone when the pain won’t exist anymore. Given what we know Ren feels about suicide and that because of joe, he refused the option, I think this makes sense. And I agree this verges on rock/metal. In case you didn't know, I think this track was written and recorded in 2021, When Ren was just starting his recovery and treatment in Canada. All the Tracks Rens releasing now, from the Sick Boi Album, were all written before Hi Ren, Some over 1yr before, some 2yrs, some even longer All the vids being released now were recorded before " Hi Ren" The only tracks/vids Ren has written after "Hi Ren" are "For Joe" the King Dotta Diss track, "Murderer: Acoustic Version" and the spoken tribute to Joe, at the end of Suicide, which Ren wrote just 2 weeks before release, after the interview with Knox Hill, in which Ren went into great detail, on what happened to Joe before and after he jumped off the ridge. Everything was planned well in advanced, because Ren knew he was going to spend nearly all 2023 getting treatment in Canada. He didn't know how it would effect him or what side effects, if any.

Fantastic reaction! thank you. For some context, you may find this interesting. In his 1 million-subscriber thank you speech, (I may be paraphrasing slightly) Ren advised those “feeling hate against their fellow man”, to feel that hate/pain, express it, then let it go and find new peace. Seems like he is taking his own advice in Masochist and Lost All Faith. He wrote them during his darkest times, then took that pain, disillusion, desperation, depression and frustration and expressed it in songs about killing the whole world and losing his faith with everything. He created art. I’m in awe.🤯

Some stray thoughts while listening to you and Ren. It's engrossing to watch how, almost like children with building blocks, you stack word-bricks this way and that way, knock them down, and build anew, making sense and making nonsense, and making nonsense make sense or vice versa. To my own degree, I'm familiar with the process. Next, a friend once bemoaned to me that she'd reached a life-stage where she felt flattened, that she simply didn't care about anything anymore. I told her that's one way of expressing nirvana, a blissful state of emptiness that monks and others spend "half their life" trying to achieve. Anyway, I enjoyed the tumult of Ren's song and your reaction... and the resulting blissful satisfaction. Good early morning (from here) and thanks, Mr. Boyd!

I think Mug is the guy who when a gang is caught is left to take all the blame, keeping mum, he ends up the only Mug shot at the cop shop... he does his time but no one else does, ... also someone innocent left 'responsible' for some debt, task, criminal liability when everyone else abdicates responsibility.... most often used in the lesser meaning. He's a mug, she always uses him... might also have just refer to being a utility object.
