Pennine tower old Otis goods lift + motor room (Lancaster services)
mrmattandmrchay is joined by mrphill100 to film this epic tower.
This is the Moto Lancaster motorway services on the M6 (originally Forton services) - more details below.
We start off with an old otis lift used to transport supplies from the loading bay.
In the next video we continue into the abandoned "Pennine" tower and explore the main motor room which still runs the passenger lifts.
MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE TOWER:
Opened in 1965 with the name Forton services, it was the second service station to open on the motorway (Charnock Richard being the first), and is named after the nearby village of Forton. The architect was T.P. Bennett and Son and it was originally operated by The Rank Organisation.
Opened in 1965. The services is notable for an unusual hexagonal concrete tower on the northbound side, named The Pennine Tower, which originally housed an up-market restaurant and a sun deck. The tower was designed to resemble an Air Traffic Control Tower and is a prominent local landmark. The tower closed to the public in 1989 due to current Fire Regulations (there is no means of providing an alternative exit from the restaurant deck in an emergency).
The original Otis pentagon-shaped elevators which served the tower are still used to service the ground floor and first floor of the building.
The Tower was listed Grade II on 15th October 2012

Excellent! Glad the original OTIS lift still there and in a very good condition. That lift motor room access is pretty unusual.

+elevatorfan2063 The guy on site was really keen to show us this one - he even offered to ride it whilst we filmed the motor and relays. Nice lift, I liked the tower ones better though.

yes the tower ones are wonderful. Has the other lift ever worked since you have been there or do you know about it?

Amazing! Can't wait to see the final! Darn, I wish to find some Swedish Flohr-Otis Lexans from the 60's like theese! I know there gotta to be one! I have seen alot of modernsied ones, but the only originls that used to exist 1967-2012 were at Gärdet Subway station. They may look boring & generic, but the controllers were the big deal! It was hard to maintain and it broke so often. One of the Three even was permamently broken prior, and was first to be replaced.

I think these model always common in industrial area in hong kong, just like Hitachi, Fiam, OTIS, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Fujitec etc.

+Vincent Chong Yes, I've seen many of the videos that you are referring to (including some of your videos). I like watching the high rise industrial area lifts that are in Hong Kong - very common there, but not in the UK :)

Wow, love that motor. What was that buzz noise?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 8 жыл бұрын
+Bon Ron The one in the basement? That's either the fire alarm panel fault buzzer or a fault buzzer from one of those control panels at high level. It's probably easy to ignore as this is the deliveries area.

Did this elevator not have a selector? If so, why does it not have one? Do single speed elevators not need floor selectors? Or does it not have one because this elevator only has 2 floors? And does this elevator only remember 1 call at a time?
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 8 жыл бұрын
+upanddownadventures Good question and one that I can answer. This does not have a selector for a couple of reasons but the main reason is that it only serves two floors. When the lift gets to the top of the shaft, it stops. When it gets to the bottom of the shaft, it stops. This is a fairly simple relay set up. When the ground is pressed the relays latch and send the motor down. When the lift reaches the bottom, the relays unlatch, and the same for upwards. So, this doesn't need any special setup like a floor selector and uses the roller switches in the shaft on their own. Also, this is a one speed lift, so level less roller switches and relays. I didn't try the one call or two calls at the same time, but 99% sure it will only respond to one at a time.

@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 8 жыл бұрын
+wolfviperepicdude Not sure, but it was probably the fault buzzer on the fire alarm, or one of those panels at high level.

they sure are! my dream is to find a derelict yet working lift so i can film it. Something close enough from failiure to be scary but far enough to not get stuck or worse. Although i wish i get a better camera until then. I once was on this building with 3 lifts. 2 were working and modernized by Otis in the Series 1 era. The other one was a derelict original 1960's Otis with original buttons and panels. I could get in it (on the ground floor, suspiciously level with the platform floor) but obviously not operate it and it was dark inside it. Sadly i didn't film it (my elevator filming rampage where i filmed my videos was built up to the grand finale at that building to find the door shut. damn) but i sure wish i did.
