There's a lot of positive things to be said about Mass Effect. Andromeda is in a galaxy of its own in the worst possible way. For many, this is the entry that killed the Mass Effect franchise. For others, a misunderstood black sheep. With a half decade gap between me and the last time I played through this game, I decided to suffer through it one more time for all of you to see if anything had improved.

The writing was the big thing with me. There's SO much forced humor. It's like they were trying to do the Citadel DLC type thing without having earned it. It didn't earn it with the time and weight of the choices that got us there. And it certainly didn't earn it with the characters.

@@Slayer398 I saw some analysis of the Asari models and why they looked as bad as they do, apparently it's mostly down to the texture and layering. In ME1-3 there is only 1 asari body and face model, which is that of Liara, Samara/Morinth is the only exception. The difference being that for skin textures, the OT used a gray base model and applied colored textures to it along with some unique shading, I don't understand it completely but it is able to portray much more variance this way. Andromeda uses only one Asari body and face as well (Except PeeBee) but the base model is Blue, being painted on with some markings rather than different skin colors and shading, so they all look much more similar than the Asari of the OT. Andromeda also has a problem with the female humanoids where all the necks are too thin for the size of the heads.

This was actually the first Mass Effect game I really played. I did play ME1 in 2007 for like 10 minutes and didnt like it (I was like 13 and had no patience). My friend who was big into Mass Effect was so hyped for Andromeda so I got it with him. I had fun with the game. The story/characters were completely forgettable but the gameplay was so much fun. Outside of the tech problems, I didnt understand what all the fuss was over this game. To me, it was a perfectly fine, but not amazing, game. It wasnt until a couple years after when I first played the full ME trilogy and was blown away did I realize why everybody was so let down by Andromeda. I still think its an ok game with some redeeming qualities, but its definitely a massive disappointment for a Mass Effect game.

Ryder family secret was interesting side story and left so many questions and vaults also had some interesting story behind them, even main story became interesting just before it ended. I played Andromeda for the first time this year after a long time of expecting to hate it, and I really enjoyed it. It has some issues with the writing and the open worlds can get a bit boring from time to time, but overall it's one of the most fun experiences I've had on the PS4. Gameplay is great (possibly best in the series), soundtrack is great, sense of exploration is great. The changes to the dialogue system and removal of paragon/renegade was risky, but I think it worked perfectly for a game about someone thrown into a leadership role that they weren't prepared for. Balancing your behaviour between rational and emotional, trying to keep a level head. It's a solid 7/10 game that was just never capable of living up to the original trilogy.

I've come to find that MEA is 7 game in a family of 8s and 9s that's treated as a 3. A fun but flawed game that showed a lot of promise but couldn't get out of in-office politics (By this I mean how the Montreal and Edmonton studios could not manage a clear vision for this project.) To touch a little on the tone system, it could've gone the route of DA2 where your character picks up the tone over the course of the game through your choices. But unfortunately, it's another idea that fell to the wayside. Also I've already done another playthrough this year lol. Anyway, looking forward to the next ME (just as long as Shep is left to rest 🥴) PS picking the casual/ emotional responses leads to more "comical" tone most of the time. logical/professional is actually pretty balanced.

Played this last year and I really enjoyed it. The trick is to not stay and clear an entire planet but to move along with the story, it'll tell where you need to go and when and bring you back to finish up naturally. The game really needs level suggestions for the quest list. Not for difficulty but for continuity. The second trick is to realize out of the box, that this isn't an evolution of ME3 but a direct evolution of ME1. Once you get Profile Switching down, the combat is really fun on the hardest difficulty. Taking away control of the party members away is something you'll get used to but never appreciate though.

back when it came out a friend asked about it. I told him "If the original ME trilogy was the original Star Wars trilogy, Andromeda is The Phantom Menace." I stand by that. The combat was definitely fun and planetary graphics were great, but the plot, characters, races, story was so definitely boring, lacking and did nothing for me. Multiplayer was a lot of fun, mostly because it was entirely focused on combat. Which I find hilarious given this is Mass Effect. The series origin, jank/awkward combat that was acceptable because the plot, characters, story were so gripping. Now the best thing in a Mass Effect game was the part that stripped away all the Mass Effect. Should have altered the origin story (why they left the Milky Way) and just given the game a fresh, new title with zero association to the original series. Might have been better received as it's own thing.

So just a few points to cross off as I have a love-hate relationship with how I apparently come off when I give my opinion. The lighthearted side could have worked if you had time to actually develop a rapport with the other people on your Ark. I don't really watch Marvel movies- but I would assume that the energy works better if those characters have some types of history to work with. Things like "that's your dad!" shouldn't be a line. It should have been Ryder getting pulled to the side, the pair of them talking about the mission, and there being some type of line that hints to the relationship. Simple lines like "I know you can do this," or "If it was anyone else I would be more skeptical," in the context of "You are going to lead this mission." for example. By being very direct, or for instance I believe that both Ryder and Cora are gossiping like 20 feet away from Ryder Snr. about how he acts is not only unprofessional in a workplace setting-- it was downright unbelievable. Those are the types of people that would not make the cut to an A Team like position for anything above the most low-maintenance type work. They would be the two characters that exist to give you a reason to shut it down-- think Joker and Kaiden in Mass Effect 1. You now can either build those characters like ME1 did as it was just a one-off type situation, or you can have them be background noise. That ofc doesn't fix things like animation or 110% creating an interesting character, it's just the start. You can have a lighthearted character like Liam (by personality) but it should have been he made the cut because he was extremely good at what he did. I'm talking the trope of "Oh he's unprofessional as hell, but the guy can fix just about any machine/wound/emergency he gets his hands on." And then you have the makings for a good foundation to build a character. Why is he so jovial/sarcastic? If he's so good at (insert profession here), why did he leave it all behind to come here? And my favorite when I write any character-- "Why is he doing this?" which opens up moral questions for later on. If Liam was a top-of-the-line Law Enforcer that had to leave after botching a major situation that became a stain on his department and came here to guide and protect people having his knowledge and experience-- I believe he would have been a great team member. Granted not every character has to be extremely deep with their 'why' question, and as a starting companion maybe it would have been too much. Though him simply stating "it's complicated" to explain later could be a good trade off from deeper complexity. As for things like gameplay, I never really believe that specifically companion commands will work as well with Mass Effect as they would with Dragon Age. The simple reason being a class like the Vanguard where they are the epitome of "high risk, high reward" where their charge is a core part of their damage and sustain wrapped into one. Just as well, a lot of classes are designed to be particularly good at one thing, and very weak in others. While that is realistic (to a point) it is why I strongly believe there should be off-hand or secondary classes for companions and players. Basically where you have a handful of abilities you can switch over to which allow you a layer of survivability w/o compromising the difficulty altogether. Example: being a Primary Class Engineer with strong hacking capabilities but those hacks not being able to just shut down biological units so much as make things take longer-- as such they have the Secondary Class of an Infiltrator where they are able to use solo-stealth to move to safety and once getting there, having access to something like trip-wire explosives or simple grenades to help with sub-par or every just weak weapon use. Instead as of right now, Engineer was kind of memed on for awhile when in reality-- they have been able to completely control, if not just fully shut down practically any combat encounter. They're not as flashy as a biotic Vanguard, but they still have the high reward payoff w/o the major deficit of high risk. Just my two cents of a few things. This is already way too long of a comment xD I struggle finding ways to condense changes w/o offering reasons why I believe they are better in the long run. As it stands if I were in Andrew Wilsons shoes I would be heavily avoiding using "live services" so much then claiming that they are the backbone of their revenue as eventually it's going to fail miserably. Hell, Maxis is currently at risk of losing tons of their players to Paralives simply because Alex Massé & Paralives Studios puts more effort into their gameplay. EA could easily become a loved AND profitable publisher the likes of what Blizzard Entertainment was if they had new management.

What this game was missing in its combat was commanding squad mate abilities from the power wheel. I end up preferring the Trilogy’s combat because, in Andromeda it feels as if you are the only one of any use on the battlefield and your squad mates are just along for the ride, while the Trilogy makes each squad member feel like they have some use in combat when you can use their abilities. Andromeda’s combat is still fun and fluid but it’s missing having actually useful party members

I firmly believe that the speech system for DA2 was hitting a very good sweet spot.. given the "chapter structure" of that game it was easier to track your overall dialogue choice and that influenced the basic personality Hawke had when you weren't choosing lines of dialogue. Example: if in the prologue you decided to be constantly "purple hawke" in the next chapter hawke's base lines with npc would be more quips/sarcastic driven instead of harsh or diplomatic.. And being baseline diplomatically/sarcastic/harsh could open specific resolutions to certain quests and encounters or even change the party banter a bit.. DA:I had a not bad dialogue system but the inki's personality was always a blank slate whenever it wasn't being directed by you

The problem with andromeda is that, you don' t do that after a trilogy like mass effect. Andromeda is the inquisition of ME serie, but this time, people said no. The dragon Age series is a good example of why. Every game is a different meal, in the same univers. Dragon Age Origins was standalone, and was amazing, unique. Dragon Age 2 was really different from Origin, story, design, point of interest, mechanics, it was in the same univers but in the end the game was standalone. Inquisition was not very liked especially for the very grindy, mmo-esc side quests. But it has for it to have great graphics, interesting story, even tho different again. All those games have characters in common that we want to learn more about, and our past decision influence the whole world, which is cool, but each game was a standalone gaming experience so the differences between Origins, II, and inquisition did not bother people that much, except those who could not get over Origins and kept a grudge for it. But Mass effect was THREE games, we spend with the SAME hero and the same companions, experiencing fear, love, adventures, travels, friendship, courage, combats, life and death, with epic music, a continuous storyline, climax, opening, great vilains, crazy deep lore, and so on. You don' t release a half baked inquisition after that. The facials animation were just the cherry on top, the last straw on the camel's back. No sir. But Okey I brought it, I support Bioware, for now. But they better make something better next time or just start a new series, because otherwise I will never buy anything from them anymore. Mass effect legendary was a good start.

If the original trilogy of Mass Effect got Dragon Age Inquisition pregnant, Mass Effect Andromeda would be its baby. I picked up MEA about a year ago and have been having a lot of fun playing it. Aside from some animation issues the graphics have held up very well for a game made in 2017. The Multiplayer is the best in the series because of the combat. The writing made some companions weak but all the companion loyalty missions were pretty good and fun to play. It really is a shame that BioWare abandoned the game because even after you finish the game you still have a lot of questions. Questions that could had been answered with a few DLCs. Let’s see how much of Andromeda BioWare will bring to Mass Effect 4.

Noice video! (Y) The story starting is perfect, I've researched a bit before making a series (and I still have the save to continue), and also in game for in-character knowledge. The project was made between Mass Effect 2-3 timeline, when it was possible that the Reapers will pick the Milky Way clean of biological life again. It's not widely advertised but could be put together from secret notes that it was put together quickly with unconventional resources (like Cerberus, and forbidden AI experiment on you) to possibly save the last of intelligent biological life and technological knowledge into another galaxy. My first surprise (after getting a morning coffee and toilet) was that effectively I am the parent of a newborn, an AI which sees what I do all the time, learning from it. Out-of-character I liked it a lot. For most of the time I solved some problems with the game in-character - for example only I was talking about palinka (a strong, alcoholic drink from Mordor, especially törkölypálinka which is famously bad tourist trap), and there was an NPC with pathing problems beside where I've landed, so I ackowledged her as a consumer, like our stonefaced woman boss on the Nexus, which I knew was from hangover. Yes in my mistranslated misadventures I enjoy altering translation. :P So the main enemy boss quickly got a nickname "Keyringhead". My main problem were: -the unskippable animations while exploring the galaxy you've mentioned -this galactic community was just a reskin of our home; money, pubs, police (for example faction favour point would interest me better than mere money, especially befriending the Enemy and getting controlled mutations) -there was no real end to strive for, just when the evil one first escapes beaten and warns us of an even greater danger cliche

I must admit, when it first came out, I didn't exactly hate the game, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first three games. But I recently replayed it myself just before the legendary edition came out. Completely blank slate as I didn't remember much of it, no expectations, no ME hype. And that's when I throughly enjoyed playing it, the combat is just beautiful in this game.

I think it's somewhat unfair to compare Andromeda to the entirety of the trilogy before it, as people seem to love to do. Andromeda really does give those Mass Effect 1 vibes, for better or for worse, where it feels like the start of a series of games. Had DLC expansions &/or sequels been made, I think an Andromeda series could've been great. A single game trying to start a new chapter shouldn't be fully compared to 3 other games with all their DLC's all lumped together at once. And after playing through the trilogy with LE, I can really see just how many fans happily wear rose tinted goggles when it comes to Mass Effect. The games are really good don't get me wrong, but they are plagued with many of the same or similar graphical, animation, AI, etc. issues that people gave Andromeda hell for. That doesn't excuse Andromeda for having those issues or the state it originally released in, but they've patched many of these issues out & aside from somewhat weaker story/characters it's a fine game.

My biggest gripe will always be that they rehashed and re-skinned Protheans and Collectors. Plus, when you get there, you're not actually making first contact. In my opinion, if they had the villains be the Angaarans, have Jaal join as a spy originally and then realise these new species aren't so bad and have to fight to be seen as equal and to find peace. OR if it was " we got to the promised land, but it's crumbling due to natural decay, how do we survive now", then you could have the Angaarans fighting for your equipment and your ships to be able to travel to the next galaxy in order to survive. That would have been amazing, and also it would make send for Ryder to be Pathfinder, in reality, MC would never keep the Pathfinder title, they may have the technology but they're untested and would be sidelined as an expert in their field, but they would NOT have sway. If it was life or death in the sense that the planets are dying and can't be saved at all, but you have to pathfind supplies, safe passage, etc, it would lend credence. I will never not be mad about wasted potential.

I think that Andromeda got a bad rap. The issue of “would we have fought the aliens if they came to earth” is already established as a probably with The First Contact Wars. The story seems less significant because we know and love Shepherds story. If you take Andromeda as it is, a story about a young leader trying to do their best with too much weight on their shoulders, it holds its own in my opinion. People forget Shepherd was already a Commander when we got a hold of them, this kid was just supposed to be finding a new home.

As a huge ME fan I went into this one with a different look, its not Shepard so I didn't try to compare it. The combat was excellent, but the animations were busted and later patches the PC version is better I do believe programming on the frostbite engine made it harder to get it right vs the original. Some characters were flat and not fleshed out well while others had a decent story to them. Is it a great game...no but it's not bad either sort of middle of the road overall.

Such a blown opportunity with this game. It wasn't "bad" per se, but damn what wasted potential. It was those little things that got me, like the re-used creatures, the fact that when you improved the worlds you settled on you didn't see so much as one new building under contraction, the dialog "options" which were usually the same f**king option, just worded differently. Each race had it's own pathfinder, but you couldn't play as one. The fact that you could become really OP, quite literally a one person army, very quickly, which to me begged the question, "What the hell were the companions even there for?"

Which is why it looks they bringing him back for ME5. It's just a shame we didn't get a conclusion or at least dlc for Andromeda. I replay it often. The combat was just fantastic. Man I loved that asari melee weapon that teleported you behind the enemy.

The issue with the dialogue isnt about comparing to commander shepard but rather it was pointless as they had no consequence on anything outside of maybe on one or two situations. Whereas, at least with Paragon and renegade they had an impact on the outcome of situations and both solely to the game and that was carried on to other games like mass effect 1 choices carried on to mass effect 2.

This game is just mass effect universe decorated (cozy decorations I’ll add) actually compelling action adventure game (not sticky wall hugger simulator - sorry OG series) dragon age inquisition zone design half assed on planets AND as someone who liked dai and every ME, if you’re the same I really can’t see what your issue with this would be. For $10 or so it’s a steal for content hours per dollar, even ditching the lame dai fetch quest for a totally extra crafting system. I think people expected the relatively railroad exp of ME main story levels, so they felt they had to go completionist planet by planet INCLUDING tedious DAI filler for adderall junkies ‘quests’ If u wanna enjoy this good game buried in inscrutable quest logs and just chase the main quest and companion quests (great returned idea) and for filler side quests whatever tf you feel like - you get great experience Also it improved over dai by not capping zones in a forced grind unlock, even tho that was overplayed for dai. Here u just do the main quests and worlds unlock universally ez

I think the biggest problem this game had was overcoming the rose-tinted glasses people have for the OT. They’re great games, don’t get me wrong, but so many people played them in their teens when they were less critical then came to ME:A as adults with higher expectations. It’s not perfect by any means, but all of the common criticisms of ME:A can absolutely be applied to the original three games as well. Janky animations, weird looking, dead-eyed characters, extremely lame attempts at humor, bugs, underwhelming action cutscenes… etc. I also don’t understand how so many people thought ME:A was terrible while also thinking DA:I was amazing.

If Andromeda didn't have the Mass Effect moniker it would've been a great game. There's tons of content, the combat mechanics are fun, the worlds are huge and fun to explore and the crafting is a lot of fun. Where it falls short is the characters are written poorly and the story is just ok...not even close to the standards Bioware used to have. Ultimately, it's a good game, but not a good Mass effect game. It's a shame because there was a lot of wasted potential.

I do genuinely enjoy this game, but it is kind of a hot mess in a lot of areas, I'll admit. While not a big issue, BioWare's affinity for the ugliest, frumpiest space pajamas will always infuriate me. Clothes in the trilogy were by-and-large pretty damn ugly, and for some reason they didn't get *any* better in Andromeda. Fingers crossed the game in development improves in that department. One of the actual stand-out issues that got to me with this game is the dialogue. Definitely some of it was the tonal issues you mentioned. It didn't get to me too bad, I kinda like that Ryder wasn't as serious as Shepard. But a lot of the script felt like we got the first draft. Like they were scrambling to get the script done and didn't have anyone look it over to make sure that the dialogue actually felt like something someone would say. And sometimes the performances felt weird, like the actors only did a single reading of certain lines and they just went with that one recording no matter how flat the delivery was. Noticed this a lot with Gil, his dialogue was usually pretty terrible. Which is weird because Gethin Anthony isn't a bad actor. Also, I hate Cora so much. One of the worst Mass Effect squadmates by far. She's basically an Asari weaboo, it's embarrassing to hear her talk like she's an Asari, it was only *four goddamn years* that she served with them. I even came up with my own backstory for her just so that she wouldn't be quite so unbearable.

It's crazy to me that this game killed a series in a genre I love, from a series that broke ground and was one of the most popular games of its time. Yet, in modern times combat gameplay, and if you remember, microtransactions still seeped its way into the gaming zeitgeist. You'd be hard pressed to even find a rpg game with true decision making since the time of this games launch.c

I replayed it a couple months ago. I was bored and it was in my digital library. I originally bought it due to it having a Mass Effect title. It wasn't as bad going in with my expectations already diminished. It's a decent enough action game, with the backbone of a great RPG. I like that the character customization and crafting allow for much more variety in builds compared to the original trilogy. For me, those aspects are great. Dialogue choices mattered very little and the writing was inferior. I didn't really care about any of my squadmates. It was more about just satisfying them to get achievements. I'll still likely play it again at some point, but I don't even think of it as part of Mass Effect. I just hope that the next Mass Effect game learns from the high points of the original trilogy and Andromeda. Andromeda was better at a couple select things.

Had this game received its DLC I think we'd be having a different conversation. They should've let the team work the problem vs shutting it down. And the story of the development of the game is nuts. EA and Bioware failed the devteam on so many occasions, right down to the actual process during this time. Thing is the team wasn't even allowed to really do its own thing. The DLC could've been different and allowed them to pull off what they wanted to do. If Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a second chance then ME:Andromeda could've been saved.

I think too many people give it a bad rep. The og trilogy has enormous expectations set for anything that followed. I do agree that the writing was a bit too light-hearted in a lot of areas. And the enemies were recycled a good bit in Andromeda. But the game itself I really enjoyed over-all. I think of it as a fun summer popcorn flick set in the same universe as a franchise that makes heavy but exciting period dramas.

By comparison I can practically quote every piece of dialogue in the original trilogy, remember even the most remote of places and absolutely love the characters, story and especially the companions. Recently I tried to replay Andromeda for the first time and couldn't even be bothered to finish the first enemy encounter. There was this weird marketing take that Andromeda is a different galaxy, so It should be wild and completely different, featuring different forms of life etc... Now the ME series has had, pretty decent sci-fi chops as far as video games go, and quite frankly that doesn't track. Andromeda would still be bound by the laws of physics, and in universe the bipedal intelligent hunter gatherer species was clearly shown to be a common evolutionary path. Within it's own rules, Andromeda should be no different.
