-"I've beaten him at chess so many times, that it's not polite to mention the exact number." -"After the two centuries of grueling fights, they had defeated the war, eventually." -"I can't really stand him beating me all the time, to be honest!" Alley complained. Thank you so much! Regards from Ukraine!

I think the correct sentence or expression is: - "After two centuries of grueling fights, they WON the war eventually". OR. - "After two centuries of grueling fights, They EVENTUALLY WON the war" (without "the" and with WON, you can put "eventually" in the middle). ( you can't defeat a war ). # you defeat an ENEMY in the war.

@@fredylopez2477 Sorry for the mistake! -"After the two centuries of grueling fights, they eventually defeated the horn's army in the war." In terms of word order there was a small error, as "eventually" should undoubtedly be put in the middle. However, about "the" you are wrong, as there is a rule; "If we have the construction "something of something" we need to put the article "the in the beginning of the noun phrase." In this case the construction "the two centuries of gruling fights" is an example of this article use.

Yeah, that's the slight difference in pronunciation between "can" and "can't", "the fast and little pause when pronouncing "can't" or the stop "t" when pronouncing "can't" Apparently they sound the same but in fact they don't.
