When I moved to KL for my study, i literally cooked everyday. I could not even afford to buy nasi campur for an everyday lunch meal. They don't even taste as nice as in my town n for the price, not worth it. So i just made my own dish to college instead. But imagine for a single mother who has to cook everyday while having a minimum wage job, like a thousand and a half ringgit and lives in KL. I cannot imagine how the heck can they afford this. Or they just don't.

I used to serve at buffets, I thought the food difference between boys and girls wasn't a lot but I was wrong. The boys would eat at least like a full plate or heaping plate, the girls always asked for "less" and barely anything. I noticed as a girl the aunties at those shop would give less rice or less meat and give more for the boys and also charge more.

One think i find it interesting is that, for malay community we never see mix rice as some kind of economical food. When we talk about economical food it mostly referring too instant noodle or just plain roti. We do have something call " nasi bajet" but u cant really choose which dish. Nasi bajet mostly just rice, fried egg, taugeh and soy sauce. The priced also fix which less then RM3 during my study time 2014-2017. Not sure the price for today. Btw good job for the experiment. Would love too see more stuff like this. I subscribe now !

well errr for the chinese we also called mix rice as economical rice. which was initially the point of view [for the cina's] in the past, economical meal. same thing like char koay teow. it's fried koay teow in chinese but turned out it's wet for malay friends, originates from one culture, over the time mixed in the translation and some culture [as u know msia is mixed culture] and each became their own thing. same concept, but came out different versions not trying to argue who is the founder of mix rice but you get what i mean.

Economical rice is barely even economical in this day and age, I’d argue that they’re even less cost efficient than fast food. Now if you go into a mixed rice stall and get anything meat related that isn’t using minced meat, you’re not even getting any meat, you’re basically just gnawing on scraps on bones, and they still charge you what they charge for “meat”. And if you were to really get actual meat, like chicken thighs or breast, you’ll end up doubling your budget, at that point might as well take fast food, at least you get a burger with an actual piece of chicken.

Okay hear me out. Try it with different races. My uni mates & I tested this in Kajang. As a Chinese, I was consistently charged RM1- 3 lesser than my Indian & Malay + Omani friends. We tested this at 4 different chap fan stores and unfortunately saw blatant price hike from 3 different stores. We were all very careful & took exactly the same dishes & quantity. Yet, I was always charged cheaper. Although 1 out of the 4 stores were consistent with their pricing for all of us, but similarly to your test. They also had their prices displayed for customers. Lets be honest, It is clear as day what is happening here, despite being charged lesser, I felt sick to my bones that my closest friends were being treated like this. haih.. wat to do. ☹

It could be a better survey, if there is a standardisation. After the first person has taken, a photo should be distributed for the rest of the members to see to memories the portion. Some come with office attires, straight from the bed, casual from home and dress to a party. I find out about the portion in certain particular shop, regardless portion is -/+, the price is the same. That means you pay the same price for half a scoop and a full scoop. The next question is how to determine the full scoop or how many pieces to maximise on the price paid for.

I've gotten unfair results before when I went out to a mamak with a girl classmate. Hers was RM7, and mine was RM8.90 for the same thing. So I do think some shops really do charge girls less, especially if the one stating the price is a guy. Another case was when I went to some Chinese restaurant along with a Chinese guy and an Indian guy. The Chinese guy got it like RM2 cheaper, and the Indian was charged the most. Since we came late to the restaurant, pretty much all of us took the same lauk. This might not be scientific enough tho, and I think have to do the same test where the restaurant owner is the one scooping all the items for your mixed rice (should be same portion). If still different, idk what to say la.

Maybe the 1st hawker sensed something weird... When 1st guy come in order, then 2nd guy come in order same item etc..then sit together... So prices from initially high, then price goes lower.. When obviously the next people come in order the same thing must be something fishy also...

At this point zap fan isn't worth it. You can get a bowl of noodles for like rm8-9 and the prices will be consistent whereas zap fan is a gamble

Cheap is a relative term. What do you expect so-called "fairly economy'? If you can't afford a big restaurant, then economy rice is still economy to most.

lol i notice the same pattern on both shop. around kd side right?, i think mixed rice better they scoop for us so price is standardised

Yea right..but I notice shops in KL dont wanna scoop and put for customers because: 1. Need extra manpower..waste time 2. The price becomes standardised..so they cannot cheat and charge buyers whatever they like based on mood

Singapore mix rice work differently - no self service, you point and stall owner pick. Then the dish is counted as either meat or veg (exception is fish, that is a different pricing). Then it is just counting of side dish to determine the price. I think this would standardize the cost.

I prefer this approach to..so no shocks while paying as the price would be standardised

I don’t know about Malaysia but here in Japan in just matters how attractive you are or if you’re a girl. When i’m with my husband I get mistaken for a girl a lot and my meals are noticeably cheaper than his if we order the same thing.

I find the pricing at the first place is expensive for a piece of towfoo, minced meat dish and some vegetables. I will only patronise mixed rice stalls /shop which displayed their dishes prices, at least we know the estimated price. Anyway, we can't figure out how they calculate the charges by looking at the plate of food.
