Idr where I saw it but my favorite point about the Katakuri fight is that he's the only antagonist so far who stopped asking Luffy "Why won't you stay down ? You're just a dumb kid, I've been doing this longer than you've been alive, I'm too strong for you" and started asking himself "Why can't *I* keep him down ? If I'm so strong and amazing, then how is this kid getting back up and keeping up with me ?"

The way I saw it was Luffy has already won and lost many fights and on both he never gave up He always had his ass beat out before he can figure out a way to end the fight Katakuri on the other hand has never been felt defeated since he basically uses his advanced observation haki and just wins the fight easily So when two guys with a contrasting background met for a duel the arising of this case was just naturally brilliant

She was an essential piece of the BM pirates that was captured by Chopper and Carrot by using her own powers against her. The only time Brulee was a convenience was when she came out of the Sunny's mirror worried about Kata. There was no Deus-Ex-Machina. Oven was a threat that Pound had to sacrifice himself to overcome. Perospero was a threat that Pedro had to sacrifice to overcome. Pekoms' Sulong form was a potential formidable ally that was instantly subdued and blinded permanently. Big Mom was a threat that took the entirety of the Germa and Sun Pirates to overcome. There were plenty of close calls in the arc that the SHs escaped due to their own efforts, the efforts of those that wanted to help them and even through setups that were made long before.

It was not really unpredictable. The center piece of the arc, Sanji, everybody knew he would be rescued just like Robin was. As for the big mom pirates being inspired on food, that was obvious ever since Oda showed big mom's demanding food and salivating like crazy. When Oda fully exposed the wonderland theme, it became clear how big mom would not be a defacto opponent, she actually throw her minions against the protagonists just like the original queen of hearts did. As for luffy facing the evolution of his devil fruit, that was a nice surprise. Oda clearly disregarding the devil fruit powers in favor of haki... but sadly, it had a extreme doses of plot armor as well. Luffy learning advanced haki on the fly, suddenly a new transformation who basically teared a new hole in the dressrosa plotline, the incredible "awakening" of katakuri (opening portals through the rice candy dimension to summon more arms), etc.. Sanji having a legit romance was the higher point of this mess, same for Brook finally showing his worth. Other than that, whole cake is incredibly flawed.

The unpredictable nature of this arc reminded of Chimera arc of Hunter x Hunter. This chaotic setup was an element missing from One Piece. I believe that community was negative because the arc was bigger than expected and the hyped Wano Arc got delayed. But we all must appreciate this wonderful journey and enjoy all the unexpected detours.

@@cavendish2925 My point is that they haven’t rated any of the main arcs less than anything great. Anyone can mention things they dislike about something that’s great. Enies Lobby for example imo has a great narrative behind it but the actual execution wasn’t that great as a whole compared to the Water 7 half. Sanji logically should have been killed on the train, going after CP9 alone made 0 sense. The excuse for why the Straw Hats could not only hang with CP9 but ultimately defeat them despite the fact beforehand they were completely devastated even by weaker members was really bad. It’s a case of where the author realizes he made the enemies too powerful. Even within the train fight itself we clearly see Sanji struggling to defeat Blueno yet he mid difs Jabra who was more than twice as powerful just based on doriki, let alone factoring in his DF. Even Luffy was somewhat struggling with Blueno (ironically I think this was a better fight than the Lucci one) which actually made sense. Lucci was over 4x as powerful in base+DF and Luffy holds up and ultimately wins with nakama speech motivation. The fights overall weren’t that good imo even rereading or watching them. Then there was how the Buster call was hyped to hell and was said to have an Admiral accompanying them even though there wasn’t one bc if there was the Straw Hats would have died, why even state that in the first place. Even without an Admiral it still made no sense it couldn’t take out a wounded group of rookie pirates, Luffy at that point couldn’t even move. They shouldn’t even have gotten to the point where Sanji closing the gates saved them. Water 7/Enies Lobby is still probably my favorite arc in the series so far

My favourite part of the katakuri fight has to be the end, where Luffy recovers Katakuri's face his hat. He knew how important it was for Katakuri to hide his different mouth, and had enough respect for his opponent to hide it post fight. The second half was built around the respect the two combatants had for eachother, and it shows all the way. Katakuri wounding himself to fight on even grounds, Katakuri stopped hiding himself to Luffy as a show of respect, even the already mentioned Luffy covering Katakuri's face because he knew the importance of it. I will always consider this fight the best in the series. With it's visuals and it's message, it's too damn good

I feel like the "hate" for the 3rd Act of the arc started as you said because it was a assumed that the Wedding was gonna be the end BUT at that same very time all of the 20th Anniversary news/interviews were coming out talking about the future of the series and those expectations mixed with an unexpected 3rd act left a lot of western readers impatient and whiny (Dressrosa had a similar case) which lead to some sort of resentment towards it. Personally I loved reading these chapters weekly it was the most on the edge of my chair I've felt since I've started reading OP each chapter felt like such a surprise

Yeah I feel like the editor should stop giving estimations for when an arc will end, because it's obvious now that he has absolutely no idea how long will last. What they feel is decline comes from the impression of repetition because of that. First thing's first, albeit being in the Whole Cake Island lovers side of the division, I HAD some issues with the pacing, specially reading the manga week to week (plus the typical Oda breaks). However, after watching this video, I kind of get why the pacing was "slow". It wasn't the pacing that was slow, it was just how dangerous invading a Yonko's territory is! You can't just see, arrive and conquer and leave unscathed. Just like you said about Pedro's sacrifice, the final getaway mission was delayed problem upon problem (Big Mom, Daifuku, Oven, etc.). I think that the word marathon perfectly describes this scenario I'm trying to convey. It was never going to be easy and fast and spotless, getting out of Big Mom's territory. It was always going to be difficult, delayed several times and requiring sacrifices. Again, I HAD issues with it, but not anymore, I think that it's very fitting. And the "slow pace" was very rewarding. Quick note, thank you for expressing my views on why Whole Cake Island was so good: its unpredictability. I've already commented this somewhere but what I most liked about WCI was to not know where we were headed or what would happen next. In almost every arc you know that Luffy will fight the villain and win, in this arc we never knew what was going to happen next and it was exhilarating. Sorry for the long comment but I hope that, like your video, it's worth its length. And thank you for yet another insightful and delightful video. I rewatched the entirety of Totland Arc last week and I gotta admit this arc was an absolute masterpiece. The creativity is off the charts and there was a tremendous level of tension throughout the course of the arc, especially from the start of the tea party. Luffy's entrance at the tea party is one of a kind. In one moment, he managed to get under Big Mom's skin more than anybody else could possibly have. Luffy may not be as strong as Big Mom right now but he sure gave Big Mom the most headache. What a mad lad!!!! The man sure made his presence felt throughout. Even Katakuri acknowledged Luffy's threat level in that one instant.

Just finished the video, and have to say I'm brimming with rejuvenated love for the series. I want Oda to put in everything he has because it's those little moments compiled together which make One Piece unique compared to other series and I love how Oda takes inspiration from so many other series such as Alice in Wonderland(Disney), Godfather, Game of Thrones, Power Rangers and Godzilla as in this one arc and adds his own twist to it, such a genius of a writer! The theme of deception and who you are works really well as well This arc only acts to branch out to many futute plotpoints and I cant wait to see how Oda links it, one being how Gerth is part of the Grand Fleet so the meeting between Gerth and Big Mom is going to involve the SHs, amazing planning

I think you missed one major point. WCI has made Naval warfare look quite good, and Carrot and Jinbe are the MVPs of the naval warfare strategies. Previously, sea battles consisted of no more than cannonballs just missing the targets, but this arc has redefined it. One Piece is in a world of pirates after all

The Pacing Issues only exist if you read chapter by chapter. The thing is, the story is already pretty much written in Oda's mind, so it exists as a whole and while he does try to pace it so it can work on a chapter by chapter basis, it's not the best way to read the story (it is however the best way to take notice of details that will later become important). It's been pretty obvious since Alabasta....

It's crazy to me that this comment was left 5 years ago. WCI does not feel that long ago!! Reading or watching the anime, it's definitely better to binge several chapters at a time. I've been watching the anime for like 17 years now (I only choose not to read the manga because I started with the anime and don't want to get ahead of it, but I'll read it someday) and many times over the years I stopped watching for weeks at a time, just so I could have a nice long binge. Reading the whole story after the anime is finished is going to be epic!! I'm currently taking a break with the anime, not exactly by choice though - my son is in basic training until Dec and I promised not to watch any without him - but it's going to be great to have like 20 eps to watch when he gets back. I'm gonna make a feast and then we'll do 8 hours straight, it'll be awesome.

Legit, it was an amazing arc. I never really liked Sanji, never thought much about him. Going into Whole Cake island and seeing where he is coming from and how he suffered with Germa and the pudding situation got to me. It really did. My favourite scenes was the Luffy VS Sanji moment and him realising Puddings true nature. Those were so good, especially in the anime, they knocked those two out of the park. Sanji has very quickly for me turned from being a character I never used to care much about, to one of the most respected members on the crew. That's excluding the Katakuri VS Luffy fight, the wedding, Brook VS Big mom fight, the wedding scene, the bege alliance. Those were so good. I loved this arc, but I would be lying if I said it was the best arc, it clearly is not. Like it had it's pacing issues for one, and the big mom chase screaming wedding cake all the time got to my nerves, but yeah excluding stuff like that, well done Oda👍👍👍

I think the Big thing about this arc in all honestly: it goes back to the central theme of choosing your family - Chiffon chose Capone over Big Mom - Sanji chose the Strawhats over the Vinsmokes - We even get the corruption of blood ties and how it (kind of) psychologically affects the children (the Vinsmoke boys, Katakuri and Pudding). So I'm not too sure if people (at least KZbin channels) consider Whole Cake terrible. In terms of the timeskip I put it at Top 2 right behind Zou. If people don't like this arc, then its fine of their part, but to me This Arc is the reason we read One Piece because it enhances one the central themes of the Series, Dressrosa didn't really have that. I think this arc for the sake of having lets say more mystery to the series isn't there compared to Zou, and I'll say that I liked the arc for what it was even if I did have some issues with, but nothings perfect, This arc just goes to Oda's creative writing, so I think this arc was great in that respect.

I wouldn't say Main theme of the arc, but it enhances one of the Central Themes of the entire seires as whole. I think this is the only Arc after the timeskip that goes back to that Central theme ever since the Luffy, Ace and Sabo flashback. I know "Craftsdwarf" made that video, however I've been on TV tropes alot to come to this realization before hand. I haven't finish the video so if it talks about the "main theme" please let me know what it is, just would like to know. I've a feeling a know what it is.

Thank you, I finally understand Luffy vs Katakuri. I've been confused why Luffy even won, since he never even had the upper hand and even after his new form he was still losing, and he never even got that much better at observation haki. Your explanation that Luffy won the battle of wills put everything into perspective. The battle was just Luffy taking hits and getting up over and over again because it was a battle of attrition: seeing who would give first. And because Katakuri grew to respect Luffy and questioned his resolve, he gave. Just, thanks. That's so beautiful.

Mwoakill09 Let's see, Brûlee and Flambe were horrible. Two characters reduced to plot devices used when it fits for the SHs/Luffy. Other characters that had a promising start just kinda were reduced to one or two character traits (Pudding, Big Mom). The Big Mom Pirates showcased a level of incompetence that makes me question their status in the world. Then, of course, Big Mom chasing the Sunny for half the arc was straight one of the worst things I've read in One Piece, it just felt meh. Oda could've ended WCI soon after the Whole Cake Chateu fell, and it would've been much better imo.

I think one of the major reasons why people were dissatisfied with the potrayal of big mom pirates is the fact that each and every yonko and their crews has been hyped throughout the series and put on a pedestal. When they fail to conform to the expectations people have of them its a bit underwhelming. How and why the yonkos will fall(if they even will) will continue to be a point of contention among people who follow the series. Though i do believe the arc could have been shortened.

yes people not just because Dustan reacts' negativity has a bit spread into some other youtuber for this arc you can say that this arc is shitted on, there is more people that talks bad about WCI than other arcs, but basically it is exactly the same for Jaya/Skypiea in pre-timeskip, it was an arc different. And there is way more people loving this arc than the opposite, a lot of people talked bad about Dressrosa too because of the pacing of the second half.

I'm really surprised to see that people had a problem with the climax of this arc. Granted it did take a while to resolve (and it never actually properly resolved for several characters), but I really liked it. I LOVED that it didn't end with the destruction of the plateau; just when we thought they were escaping, all hell broke loose and they were hanging on to their lives on a chapter-to-chapter basis which made it really thrilling to read every week even if the actual plot wasn't moving that quickly. I loved that Big Mom somehow became more and more terrifying with each passing page over the course of like 15 straight chapters, which is impressive considering how she was already pretty monstrous to begin with. I loved that whole climax. I don't think subverting expectations just for the sake of being surprising can be considered good storytelling on its own, but it worked really well here since it underscored Luffy's main conflict: it was a fight to prove to the world that he was serious, that he could live up to the straw hat that he was wearing. (But that's just kind of repeating what you said in the video.) And even with that said, I'm glad they barely survived this encounter because it established that there's a lot of growth left for these characters. They have a long way to go still. Man, I loved this arc. (Except that Chopper didn't really do much. Come on, Oda. Give Chopper his moment to shine.)

LeGeNd i dissagree about your first point about Sanji. All Oda and his editor said was that it was suppose to be the year of Sanji. Which it was, he got a lot of charactization and development and the center conflicts of the arc revolved around him. But yes fighting wise he got over shadowed but defenitelly not story and character wise. Which is what one piece is about. One Piece is more of an adventure series than a battle manga. Also in my opinion Big Mom isnt suppose to ve likable at all. I mean she's a psycho eho eats people when she looses controll. But I agree with most of the rest that you said. The chase sure was pretty dumb and draged out. And the promises of the editors did effect our enjoyment because of giving us faulty expectations. But if we go back and read the arc without those editora comments it wouldn't bitter us at all and therefore it doesn't take away anything from the arc. I also believe that the chase sequence would feel better phased in this case as well because we don't need to wait week after weeks to continue it.

i never watch one piece for battles.....almost nobody gets into one piece for the battles....almost all shounen anime/manga are better than one piece when it comes to fights. Also sanji did not go through much development character wise....the only 2 developments we all saw were 1. sanji not being biased towards pudding's 3rd eye. - this is character development 2. sanji is shown to have an abusive relationship in the past with his family. - this is character development the others were already there like 1. sanji wants to sacrifice himself to save the crew ?? - same old 2. sanji wants to save his family ?? - he got ready to save kiemon in punk hazard risking nami's body....same old 3. sanji bakes the best cake ever ?? - same old 4. sanji has confidence in luffy ?? - same old. in addition to that sanji actually went through a bad phase character wise....he lost confidence in his captain for a while and luffy had to regain his trust...Its almost as if sanji never learnt anything from zoro during thriller-bark. Also no antagonist is supposed to be likeable as in inspirational....we should love to hate the character.... look at doffy , katakuri , lucci , kaku , akainu , blackbeard , shielew, buggy , crocodile ,daz bones, arlong etc... WE LOVE THEM now look at wapol , hody , vander deckhan , spandam , big mom....MEH

Took me a while to get through of all of it, but man, this was a *fantastic* analysis. Your videos are fantastic for how they raise points I didn't even realize while reading the story, yet make so much sense. The characterization of Katakuri and Pudding, just how tragic Pedro and Pound's arcs were, the parallels between Luffy and Big Mom and how they struggled with hunger, and so much more. Fantastic job. The best reviews and analyses are ones that don't just make various criticisms or praises, but feel like they give a comprehensive look at the identity of an arc. You've succeeded. Whole Cake Island is my second favorite arc, personally, and you do a great job of laying out what makes it work so well. For a bit of constructive criticism that I'm sure you're already aware of, I think your video-making style would ultimately be better if you branched out into different editing techniques beyond just Ken Burns zooms of manga pages. It's acceptable in your short videos, but at this length it definitely feels a little constrained. Super Eyepatch Wolf's videos on manga might be a good place to take inspiration from in how he edits them. Another idea is that, although you focus on the manga (rightfully), using clips from the anime is just a lot easier to work with to fill time visually.

WCI was an 8/10 for me, after watching your review and re-reading the arc I liked it even more, while finding some more flaws(a few of them are nitpicky). Overall im giving WCI an 8.7/10 highlighting the nuances that I missed as well as re-reading further micro character progression throughout the arc(especially for luffy). i'm loving it even more; well done. subscribed.

Luffy vs Katakuri is a SSS tier fight. I honestly enjoyed this arc a lot more after re-reading it. I find that I appreciate arcs much more if I don't digest them 1 chapter per week.

This video here my friend is an inspiration for me. I was completely out of One Piece channels cause majoriry of them are just bullshit theories or stupid predictions, but you truly care about the series and it's meanings, nuances, tone and themes. I started my own channel here in Brasil to talk about anime, manga and movies and the way you approach the series and your analisys inspired me to always look again and really understand what I'm watching and reading before putting up a video. I gotta say, I'm thankfull for you and your channel existing and as a man who spent the last week slowly reading Whole Cake down to it's minor details just to make a video about Katakuri's characther development, I agree with every single word you spoke here. After my second reading of Whole Cake, with more attention, Big Mom became one of my favorite villains and I got so sad about Pudding and the way everyone's manipulated by Big Mom, Whole Cake arc is ome of the masterpieces of One Piece and you gave me a new view about it. A rare breed on this website since you actually take the time to carefully understand the objectives and execution of every scene. And not just fly of the handle at the first read and engage in cancer-spreading shouting matches on streams. I'm so glad I found this channel because One Piece has no legitimate reviewers on youtube and it lead to me not watching One Piece content for years. I was just trying to talk to someone about how Oda managed to pack the Mafia motif, Disney motif, Wedding motif and Power Ranger/Germa motif in one arc and transition between them seamlessly without the tone getting messy. And he said that he never thought about that since most discussions he sees on this arc are about power scaling LOL One more thing, I think you're overestimating the "hate" that this arc got. I haven't watched other reviewers on here, but I'm sure as usual they're panning every little detail that doesn't go as they imagined at a superficial level. But most FANS I've discussed with on different outlets enjoyed the arc. I even listened the One Piece Podcast review of this arc and most of them praised the same aspects you outlined in the video.

why anyone would even think its not good baffles me. character building to the max on all fronts. Other than Chopper, almost everyone gets their own shine... Plus they made Capone Bege into a character I love! Prior to, especially during the Shabody arc, I thought he was the least interesting supernova even below Killer... now he's just great. FATHER!!!!

Chopper also did something very important. He captured Brulee and so with using the mirror world they were able to rescue Brook and it helped in the plan to assassinate Big Mom. It was nothing spectacular but he also contributed something.

Wholecake Island arc is my Most Favorite Arc . This where we Get the Picture how powerful a Yonko is and Surviving an Encounter with them can be Considered a Miracle . Another thing is ,this is where we saw the Depths of Sanji's Character and background. The Underground World was also Introduced , It shows us that the One Piece World does not only about Pirates , Marines and Revolutionaries but a Bunch of Other Sinister Organization . A Militaristic Nation , Underground Dealers, a Mafia Syndiacate and a News Manipulating Mogul Duck . It also makes a twist on traditional tale of Prince saving am Princess or an an Entire Town . In this story , the Prince the one who needs savings and from a Pirate.

Wow this video showed me, that I really need to reread this arc or One Piece as a whole. While reading this arc weekly, many character arcs didn't leave much of an impression on me because I have had already forgotten about some details but just from your retelling of these events, the emotional weight of e.g. Puddings character development really hit me. Goes to show that, when reading weekly, the story loses some of it's strenghts, compared to continuous reading. On the other hand reading One Piece over such a long span of time makes the foreshadowing a lot more powerful, as you are left alone with your thoughts for longer, creating a bigger surprise when the foreshadowed mysteries and overarching themes are finally resolved.

People hate this arc? It’s literally the ennies lobby arc of the new world Sanji for once isn’t just a simp but has actual backstory to him, luffy fights a badass villain you can’t help but like, Brook outsmarts big mom. SNAKE MAN…so many amazing moments in this arc. Dressrosa was like 40 episodes of the same flashback of soldier san and Rebecca lol

Great review! I can only imagine the amount of work required to edit all of this, so congratulations! As an advice, I think you could have broken down this review in more well defined topics with some light/simple transitions instead of this stream of thoughts. Reading this arc weekly was extremely rewarding to me by the sheer quality of many individual chapters, the best characterization since who knows when, great themes, one amazing fight and some of the most surprising developments/events in this series (have we ever read something quite like the highlights of this arc before?), most of it highly emotional and personal to the main protagonists. Maybe I'm just too zen and chill to seat back and enjoy the moment. Meanwhile, I guess some readers need something less elusive/unpredictable to sustain their hype till the ending, because it's easier to keep up when you know things will finish in that typical fashion that you already know you like instead of an unknown pay off. When people are not invested, everything start to look too slow for a weekly reading and then a negative bias is born... although you can stick a 1,5 billion bounty to it at the end of the day and people will get the goosebumps. Another thing I appreciate about this arc is structure. Despite having many subplots, Oda organized them successively instead of simultaneously, so the flow was really improved compared to Dressrosa. The arc can be divided in four days and each one of them was focused in only 2 or 3 subjects and then we moved on to the next thing as the day finished. Regarding the characters' deaths, I think they didn't have a bigger impact on the reader because people couldn't believe in them because of Oda's past fake outs, so he's reaping what he sow. Everybody was to skeptical to appreciate those deaths, although I guess Oda could have made those deaths less abrupt to really build up the emotional punch, which was lacking.

Also. I agree that WCI does blend genres uniquely. But many Op arcs do that. That's one of the great part of this series is genre blending I think what WCI does good is combining genres u won't see together and making them one huge story
