The first television pilot of the show was filmed in May 1990, featuring a group of local actors in the main roles, among them was future Backstreet Boys member Howie Dorough. After the success of the pilot, the show was picked up, but the roles were recast, according to series creator Bob Mittenthal "Those kids did a good job, the proof is that the show was picked up as a series, but research told Nickelodeon it needed better-defined characters". The central characters, all students at the fictional Hawthorne High, gather for the show in a shopping-mall setting and talk about their freshman lives. This banter often segues into comedy sketches such as the commercial parody on the prank-proof suit. Welcome Freshman's characters are: - Kevin (played by Chris), the cool kid and perhaps the most normal character, with the exception that he tends to develop crushes on every girl he meets. - Walter (Rick), the "surfer dude" of the ensemble. He's ultra-laid-back and affable but not too bright. He's a regular in detention hall. - Merv (David), the genius nerd and proud of it. His claim to fame: "Merv-u-mentaries," in which he attempts to expose school scandals like cheating. Often these backfire. - Alex (Jocelyn), the beautiful and bossy one. She's boy-crazy and materialistic. - Tara (Jill), the conscience of the group. She's into recycling and animal rights.

+SneauxMan08 There were a few differences I can remember. 1. 'Welcome Freshmen' was much funnier, and took itself much less seriously. 2. "SBTB" portrayed high school as fun, safe, and clean. 'Welcome Freshmen' portrayed it as the seventh circle of Hell, especially for underclassmen. 3. The "Administrator" characters on the shows were pretty much polar opposites. Mr. Belding on 'SBTB' was an out- of- touch prude, but also shown to be a good, decent man just doing his job who really cared about the kids and almost always acted in what he believed to be everyone's best interests. Mr. Lipman on 'Welcome Freshmen,' in contrast, was a selfish, sadistic prick (Albeit an extremely funny selfish, sadistic prick) who hated the kids, especially freshmen, and took advantage of any opportunity he could get to make their lives miserable.

The show's original format was a sketch comedy show with a certain theme integrated in each episode in the first 2 seasons. Some of the comedy routines involved a tortoise named Mortise teaching children about safety, a historian named Mr. History who talks about past generations of freshmen, the bumbling, freshman-hating, vice principal Mr. Lippman imagining himself as a stand-up comedian telling really bad old jokes that insult freshmen, and a student named Billy Cushman who, though his appearance was occasional, provided not only a good example of how not to behave, but also a good example of flatulence. Each episode had two or three short skits about the gang's misadventures in high school. Recurring skits Home-Room Announcements-Mr. Lippman, the vice principal, doing the morning announcements (at the same time, imagining how he'd really like to say them as a stand-up format). Coach Roach The Merv-U-Mentary-Merv's amateurish attempt at uncovering news and scandals at the high school. Mr. History-featuring the gang as high school students of a past time period. Mike Who-featuring close-ups of a sidelined high school basketball player driving the crowd wild with a single wave. Eventually cut after vice Principal Lippman said it was too distracting, resulting in a tense showdown between Lippman and Who. Mortise the Safety Tortoise In the 3rd and 4th seasons, the sketch format was abandoned and Welcome Freshmen became a regular retootled sitcom and character driven. The gang became sophomores, except Walter who flunked and was held behind. Merv and Tara left, with Merv skipping the rest of high school and going straight to college, and Tara and her family moving to a Biosphere. New characters came in: Manny and Erin (incoming freshmen) and Grant, a junior who was Erin's brother and soon became Alex's boyfriend. Eventually Walter moves up to sophomore as the teachers all threatened to quit if they had him another year.
