Info of My Radio Restoration
National Panasonic T-100D, was a 9-transistor world band radio manufactured in 1966 by the National Panasonic Corporation of Japan at their Matsushita Industrial Complex. It was a 4-band battery powered short wave SW receiver for the high-end of the market. It became popular due to its high quality sound produced by a twin speaker system providing separate bass and treble. In 1966, a Class-B push-pull output stage using a matched pair of germanium transistors 2SB324 was a good as it got and many high-end products of that time had it. The good thing about this design is that the Japanese kept improving the components with better output transformers and speakers; consequently, many products of that period had identical output stages and produced very high quality sound.
Konosuke Matsushita founded National Panasonic in 1918. Starting as a one-man repair shop, it quickly became Japan’s number one manufacturer of electrical and electronic products. In the 1963 issue of Fortune magazine Matsushita Electrical ranked 37th

Em 1966 aos treze anos fui morar a quase dois mil km de Manaus, quem tinha rádio em casa era só pra enfeite até que apareceu Philco Super Transb que tinha um sintonizador giratório onde aparecia os nomes das capitais com as frequências de suas estações de rádio. Foi uma verdadeira revolução, lá eu houvia os jogos de praticamente todos os estados do país. Não me considero saudosista, mas já procurei em lojas de antiguidades e não encontrei, mas ainda não desisti.

Try retrobrighting next time to get rid of the yellow discoloration on your plastics so that you won't just resort to using sandpaper and paint. There are tons of methods of retrobrighting on KZbin, notably the method used by The 8-Bit Guy. Then again, glad that, somehow, you bring otherwise dead and beat-up old electronics back to life.

Great job on the hardware, but again the capacitors need to be replaced and resistors need to be checked. The radio restorations I and many other do here is circuitry and radio alignment. We usually leave the outer case in original state. Great video. Maybe you and I can hook up on a radio, I do the circuitry, you do the case and hardware. 👍👍👍👍👍

@@aklankrisz Piss off. A 50 old radio doesnt have a single capacitor that works properly, every single one is way past their lifetime. Japan or not, old caps are shit no matter if from the 60s or 70s or 80s. New ones are built better and last longer. That radio is practically on its last legs. I have 40 year old Japanese very high end amplifier with Nichicon filter capacitors which were likely the best brand at the time. I changed the filter capacitors with new ones and it sounded better, the old ones do not filter the current nearly as well. Leaving filter caps in 40+ year old gear is just asking for more trouble, could ruin the rectifier and transformer sooner or later.

@@AldoCugnini Every paper capacitor in any electronic unit is faulty today, every single one have to be replaced. So you can either change them yourself which is quite cheap in a mid 60s radio because there is not that many and the values are tiny. Or you could wait for one of them to really mess up your unit and repair it at a much higher price.

@@aklankrisz Correct not everyone has an ESR meter. However, if you want to work with electronics having one is very useful. I have the Blue ESR tester. It also comes in handy checking batteries as well. With that said I would check them. It is a puzzle if they are off you know that was a contribution to the problem or the whole problem. Now since you are in there and caps are cheap replace them with a good quality cap. I go with Nichicon caps. Caps and most electronics parts are cheap. Just have fun with it. Yes, I would replace them but check the values.

Answer to the one man's question I doubt we're all the connectors go back that's very simple he's filming everything as he's taking them off this guy is very good at what he does it's true he didn't replace the capacitors and other transistors however we don't know how much he's charging this man for this job do we as far as I'm concerned I would definitely let him work on any of my electronics very good video

I restored one of these some time ago. I wasn't my intention to rebuild it but since it arrived smashed in transit I had little choice. Superb radio but most of the old germanium transistors had broken down internally and had to be replaced, parts sourcing was a problem, particularly the battery / s-meter but after a year and a half work and expense (far more than it will ever be worth) it was as good as new.

Nice machine and nice work! I recommend that you use dichloroethane or dichloromethane to repair certain plastic parts. To extend the crack, I would use a hot stapler, which melts a thin metal wire into plastic. Also, for stable operation of the device, I would check the electrolytic capacitors, because they could already dry out and lose capacity (I use an LCR meter to check the details). Good luck with further repairs and restorations!

Mike did a good job on cleaning this unloved beast of a portable radio. Needs some adjustment by a more skilled radio repairman though. Suspect some detector issues due to capacitors just aging and soldering joints that are so so. I like what you did so far as it does work now!!

Hi from ham radio VK3AML. This was my first transistorised general-coverage HF and MF receiver, bought new and given to me by my parents for my 13th birthday on 8th March 1967. It was of fairly recent manufacture then, so at a guess these would have come on the Australian market in 1966. Sensitivity was quite good, though a little noisy without the aid of a tuned external antenna. For tuning 160 and 80 metres I used a coil in series with my inverted "L" antenna and earth, aligned outside the radio with the internal ferrite rod antenna. I think the transistors were mostly germanium - or perhaps very early silicon. Main problem was that the receiver drifted badly in frequency, so that even with an added BFO they were not much good for sideband reception. Above 18 MHz the frequency drift and the image responses were so bad as to make the receiver a poor performer at the top end of the frequency spectrum. You could tune AM CB signals on 27 MHz but even the proximity of your hand near the tuning dial could make the receiver tune off the station. There was a square loop antenna around the back of the radio, which could be flipped up above the radio. It looked impressive, but was not much good for enhancing reception on any frequency, so I rarely had it flipped up. The first thing to wear out on these was generally the audio volume switchpot, which would come on with a loud "bang" unless the pot was replaced. Good luck with your restoration. Very nostalgic for me.

interesting work, but the metal parts lost a lot with the spray. It would have been better polished and lacquered. plastic cleaning well. Did the chassis look good with the spray but could that affect the faraday effect of it? The only ugly result was how bad the letters on the front remained after the spray. They were sculpted in metal. a little Chinese ink would have been enough after painted. Anyway, enjoy watching this video. thanks for uploading it to yoytube !!!!

The fine winding on the left side of the ferrite bar at 12:38 is for MW while the thicker winding on the right is for SW1. The antenna for SW2 & SW3 is often a telescopic antenna.

Plastic yellows after time. 'The 8 bit guy' has done some videos on how he restores plastic cases to their original color. Painting the chassis? Why? It's hidden inside the radio and can't be seen, and you MUST be able to get all the grounded electrical connections to make contact with it for the radio to work.

He also shouldn't have painted the metal accents, at least sand them a bit more or find something to fill in those pits. Also, should've used a filer for those knobs they are the most important (to me at least, so it would be more aesthetically pleasing)

No matter what others may say, you do a fine job of taking something anyone else would consider junk and bring it back to an attractive usable life. You look like you do this with what you have, and may not have the capacity or finances to replace some of the parts or your objective is to make it work as is. After all, if you want to sell it, you may not get the money you spent back out of it if you go to the cost of fully restoring it. Good job and fun to watch you work.

Good looking result, but please use better soldering techniques: when you remove a wire, remove most of the solder at that connection too (use a solder-sucker or solder wick); clamp the new wires to be soldered, then use a 40-watt soldering pencil, NOT a big soldering gun. Apply the solder AFTER you heat the connection, not before. Make sure the soldering tip is properly tinned, and never use the same soldering tip for plastic repair. These will make for better connections, and your viewers will learn a better skill.
