@@eliciamoreno it means that we put thinner layer at the base and keep building up the thickness of the paint ur using and based on which medium you are using, u would need to use more as u proceed (if the medium makes the pain thicker) or u would need it use less and you proceed (if the medium makes the pain thicker) [I'm also new to oil painting so feel free to rechdkc everything I said ]

I'm 77 years and 4 month old today and I've determined to start oil painting for half a years ago and still feel timid to begin! Painting is my childhood dream, but as an orphan at early age, I couldn't afford paper or pencil until my boyhood. My dear friend sponsored the materials for painting and we both didn't know exactly what we need and he bought me a few canvases, brushes, and oil-paint tubes, but not mediums are included. I even thought I must begin drawing yesterday and watched a few oil painting tutorials and found out I need more than I have to start painting- MEDIUMs!!! What a foooool I was who even think it was the same as water colour to use water as its medium. Miss, your explanation is very lucid and enlightening and I'm going to ask my friend to send some mediums right away!! Thank you so much, sensei.

Great advice, just one thing I'd like to add, and that is Liquin is considered a fatty medium. Your order was correct if you were to use those exact mediums, but you also wanna use a ratio it as you paint; 1:1 beginning, 2:1 middle(progressively less lean as you continue each layer) then finish with a fatty medium or the same medium you start with minus any lean solvents(this method is for liquin in particular). Hope this helps anyone who was wondering about liquin.

All this time I thought linseed oil helps the paint dry faster and bought it. Didn't think twice. Halfway, I realized that what I really need is turpentine. Sadly, I have to save up before I could buy one. But at the end of the video I had recognized their function and I don't regret buying linseed oil now since I could use them over lean. Thank you so much! This video greatly enlightened me!

Obraz trzeba odstawić wtedy by podsechł dlatego ja maluję kilka obrazów jednocześnie i wtedy maluję "do syta". Generalnie zasada jest taka by zacząć malować chudą warstwą a następna warstwa już tłusta. Chodzi o to by po latach obraz nie popękał.

Thank you very much for this video! I'm new in oil painting. Please, tell me if that's right: 1. I can do the entire painting with liquin, more liquin for 1st layers and less liquin later on. 2. If I want a transparent glaze when the whole painting is almost done, I should use linseed oil only, so this glaze layer doesn't crack later on. Thank you !!
@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio 3 жыл бұрын
1. No it is the opposite. Liquin thickens the paint so I would be careful not to use too much on the first layer. I like to use a paint thinner on the first layer. However, if the first layer is COMPLETELY dry you should be able to paint over it without a problem. 2. Canson recommends to avoid using linseed oil: it will be too liquid, making the colors run on the support. However, I have used it as a glaze and it worked well. I hope that is helpful! Good luck

I noticed when you were talking about Liquin you said "there are many different brands, this is just the one I could find at my local art supply store". But actually Liquin is Trademarked and produced by Winsor & Newton so that is the only brand available. However there are other types of quick drying alkyd mediums available. I only use the Liquin and I'm not familiar with other brands of a similar product. Thank you for a great video!

Thank you for this. I'm supposed to buy turpentine and liquin for my art class. So, turpentine is used to clean brushes and make the paint thinner right? Then what's the purpose of liquin just to keep the paint thicker? Why do we even need liquin then? Wouldn't turpentine be sufficient?

Good question! Liquin slows your drying time, turpentine speeds it up. I use turpentine for my first layers, then liquin for the top ones. You could just use turpentine, but liquin is really nice at extending the drying time and extending the paint.
@therestlessknitter4290
@therestlessknitter4290 3 жыл бұрын
Turpentine can break the bond between pigment and oil (since it’s a solvent) which may lead to paint flaking or rubbing off. Liquin protects that bond. Using turps to thin your paint for an under painting is fine but not for top layers.

@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio Ай бұрын
I just learned some new info at a workshop, turpentine or gamsol is great for the under painting, but it will dry fast. If you want to keep it wet you could use linseed oil, not much, but it will increase the flow of the paint and not speed up drying time. One artist I know paints his canvas with linseed oil before beginning so it is wet, another paints a light wash of gamsol and some oil paint, then wipes away highlights

Great question, so many people ask about this. I regret to share that only recently have I started paying attention to disposal of my paints. The leftover turpentine is kept in a jar to use next time. I try to use as little paint and liquin as possible, and linseed oil is non toxic. You can do it, just paint so that the oils on your pallet end up on your painting. If you have leftovers, cover them and store them in a cool place to be used again.

Thank you! The “fats” are used to extend drying time. Liquid and turpentine both speed up drying time. So if you are working on a portrait you may want it to not dry as fast, in that case you would use linseed oil instead of turpentine to thin it out.

so just that I get it right: the first layer is done with a thinner and not with a medium. I can use Turpentine (which I'd rather not) or I also found Sennelier "Green for Oil". Basically you use anything that classifies as a thinner? Liquin too or is that a medium? And anything that comes after the first layer is done with Linseed Oil or any other medium from whichever company I choose? The thinner thins the paint out, hence calling it "lean" and the Linseed Oil (and other mediums) make it more oily, hence "fatter". Do I have all that right, like wtf?

I use the same brand paint so its fatness is the same across colors. If I add the linseed oil to later layers of paint, will I be using thin over fat? Ivory bar soap will clean your brushes. Dry them with air. Rub the wet soap, over a sink, with the brush after removing excess paint with a cotton cloth. Then rub the brush gently in the palm of the hand. I want to avoid turpentine.

Thank you for the video. Easy to understand! Yet I’m still confused about the medium. Are both liquin and linseed oil finished painting shiny? which one is shiner? Are they equal to varnish?
@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio 3 жыл бұрын
They aren’t varnish, liquin slows the drying time and it can look a little plastic, linseed oil extends the drying time but I don’t think it changes the finish of the oil paint

I'm new to oil painting and I'm in the process of starting my first painting. I actually used the Linseed and Gamsol first. Is that an okay way to start or will that lead to problems down the road like cracking, etc?
@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Adding linseed oil (fat) to gamsol (lean) is what allot of artists use when painting. It should be fine as long as you don't use more gamsol (adding more lean) in the layers on top of the one you are currently painting. Fat over lean is a good rule to help avoid cracking

what if i start off with using watered down linseed paint? or if i do the sketch with watered down acrylic?
@MrOtterArtStudio

bug fat if you use linseed oil it won’t dry as fast as the watered down acrylic. I like using watered down acrylic under oil

@dev null oops i meant like oil paint diluted w linseed oil!!!
@rduff1999
@rduff1999 3 жыл бұрын
@dev null you can do your under painting using a little water with acrylic paint like a wash. Too much water and you will destroy the chemical bonding. Once the acrylic paint layer is dry you can then go over it with oil paint ( because they then don't mix). However after you have used the oil you CAN'T use more acrylic.
@rduff1999
@rduff1999 3 жыл бұрын
@dev null I agree. I only use the acrylic toning when I am pressed for time because I have been lax and haven't prepared the canvas ahead of time.

@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You can use as much or as little as you want, just know if you use a lot and your painting is upright and not flat, it will drip

with the fat over lean rule, where would the paint from tube stands between these 3 medium?
@MrOtterArtStudio
@MrOtterArtStudio 10 ай бұрын
It would start with Turpentine or mineral spirits, then the oil paint, liquin, then linseed oil. Paint, even though it is oil paint, is counted as lean.

Thank you so much.. Really helpful..I just wanna ask.. do we really need turpentine or any other oil to clean the brushes? Or anything we have at home is sufficient? Like soap and stuff..
@ArningEchanoPH
@ArningEchanoPH 3 жыл бұрын
Turpentine seems more effective in cleaning brushes and it keeps them softer, but soap does the job too it just makes the hair of the brush a little too dry and brittle.
