This little beauty deserves a full restoration. All the old paint scrapped off, the whole thing stripped down and de-greased. It would make a great series of videos for every one to watch and it would be lovely to see the lathe transform to its former glory. Just my opinion. I have bought 2 lathes now (both second hand) and did a full strip down, re paint ect and they look like brand new. Such a satisfying and fulfilling job to do.

I have a bought and sold a few southbend as well as other brands of older lathes. The price varies a lot, depending on what part of the country your in. Here in Southern California, a ten inch similar to that one, would be listed from about $1800 - $3500, and may not have all the accessories. It's all about supply and demand. Thanks for the videos, JB.

Pete, your videos have helped me immensely. I recently bid on a really nice mid 60's Logan 10" at a machinist liquidation auction. It went for $1200. I couldn't afford to go over $1000 but wish I'd bid more of course as it was a good model with quick change gears, the undermount motor, and was on the original table much like this one in this video. There was also an old South Bend Model A with the rear mount motor and gears that only went for $400 but it was just too old for my desire (and space to put it). The guys who got the Logan said they are going to use at their auto repair shop. It will haunt me for year lol. I really wanted that lathe.

I know this is an older video but thanks for taking the time to share this knowledge. I have been thinking of buying a SB Heavy 10 as my first lathe this really helps. I mostly build antique cars and have wanted a lathe for a while. This really helps to know what to look for when examining a lathe for a newbie. (Wish I had a shop teacher like you in school)

A lathe can be an expensive purchase no matter if it is new or old. If I were to ever buy another I would get a new cheap Chinese lathe. Keep on keeping on.

Very nice and quite interesting video! Good points. My South Bend lathe is so old it only has a 3 digit serial so he don't care but I do. Thank you!

Looks similar to my 10L, though mine is the 3 1/2' bed model. Bed wear is similar too. I got lucky that the lead screw and half nuts are really good, but someone abused the power feed terribly. The worm was stripped and the worm gear had most of the teeth gone. Replacing those parts was about 1/3 what the whole machine cost me. Runs a treat now though.

I worked the summers between 10th and 11th and 11th and 12th in the school print shop. Me and 2 of my best friends, ran 3 Chandler and Price handfed machines from the late 1800s , 2 were in pristine condition , the 3rd was in excellent condition . The teacher had been there forever, and he showed each student, the proper way to do everything, on those machines , if you did something differently, than what he showed you , you never got near it again. His name was Mr. Stegmeier and I owe my life in the printing trade to him , I never got rich , but I always had a good paying job, if I wanted one.

That heavy 10 is beautiful, Mr. Pete, and I know you think so, as well. Do you have the gib screw for the cross slide? It appears to be missing in the video.

I just pickup a gov surplus 10 heavy southbend lathe for $800 problem I have is the lathe never came with chucks and has a cam lock plate on it that I have not been able to get off yet. I have a plastic gear lock coming so I hope to be able to break back plate loose.

This 10L Heavy goes for around $3,000 on eBay today. if you're really lucky you'll get one with the D1-3 mount instead of the thread, which mine has.

Talking about missing tooth, I have "planted" a missing tooth for my 9A with success... mill a slot, silver solder a little piece of steel and cut the tooth with a gear cutter

Hi. I really enjoy your videos on Southbend lathes. So much so that I want to buy one for my shop at home. But I don’t know how to go about it. Most used lathes are far away and local pickup only. Do you sell lathes? I’m in Los Alamos New Mexico. I need to find someone I trust to help me find a good lathe. Please let me know if you have any good ones for sale, or if you have any suggestions for me. Thanks, Paul

Now we know that "9 inch" refers to the swing, "Light 10" means "small spindle hole" and "Heavy 10" means "Large Spindle Hole." So _THAT'S_ why "Heavy 10" is SOO much more expensive! It's _worth_ more, but also FARR more costly to equip for the _much_ scarcer spindle thread.

Lloyd, having watched your video, I was wondering, does the lathe bed have the same profile on both sides? My thought was if so ,would it be possible to switch the lathe bed end for end if the opposite end doe's not have any damage on it and have a fresh start?
@johnc4352
@johnc4352 8 жыл бұрын
It won't work Matt, if you look closely at the front rail you will see the inside part of it is a flat section and that won't let it be turned around for a fresh start. P.S. Mr. Pete is Lyle, I believe.

Can Anyone give me an idea of how much a south bend B9 lathe with a three-foot bed might weigh?
@mrpete222
@mrpete222 Жыл бұрын
I would guess about 400 pounds without the stand. Check on vintage machinery for an old south bend catalog that might show shipping weights.
