Absolutely fantastic!!! My father was a full Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical School back in the good old days. He told me that often the best teachers were those that had the ability to work through each step of a problem, demonstrating how and why he made each decision that was made. Students need to see the teacher's thinking process, so that they learn to reason through the issue in a logical fashion. Teachers that instruct in this manner are the absolute top of the teacher pyramid. They are rare, and YOU ARE ONE!!! You are definitely a gifted teacher, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I found you! You have taken what could have been a meal of cold, thick and tasteless oatmeal, and turned it into a repast fit for Epicurus' own son! I am as fascinated by learning to be a machinist as I was to become a medical doctor. You and I are about the same age, and you, sir, are close to being a national treasure. THANKS for not hiding your light under a bushel!

Lyle, as a guy who just loves this type of restoration and repair work on machines, I wanted to tell you to give the Extreme Pressure Lube #3 a try on the side gears. They'll go even quieter and resist slinging off. It silenced my south bend 13". Love that stuff.

Here it is, Christmas Eve 2021 and I am spending it with Mr. Pete and the Logan lathe repair. I am so pleased the repair worked but I see what looks like a follow-up video so off I go to watch it. WAIT, Merry Christmas Mr. Pete to you and your entire family from an old woodworker in Northern Iowa where it is a balmy 34 degrees at 10;30 PM. I hope you have a great Christmas and maybe on Christmas morning go down and get a whiff of that 90 weight oil as a treat. Great videos

Thank you for this and all the other videos. I'm slowly working my way through them and learning a lot. Like one of the other commenters, I only had wood shop as an option, but at least I like woodworking. Now it's time to learn to work metal too...the combination can be very useful and beautiful sometimes...and even with wood I've always loved precision where possible. If you ever take a change gearbox apart again, could you explain how it works? I can see the input and output shafts, and how the key ways lock various groups of gears together, but I'm puzzled as to why there were two identical clusters on the input side...the one you fixed and the one you considered swapping with it. Seems like that would be redundant. Thanks again for continuing to teach!

Very informative video. Now I have a great understanding of the travel control mechanism. Good tips on safety and other shop practices along the way. Something totally unrelated: An old man (90+) once told me about the floor pedal shift mechanism on the old Ford Model T. It was a planetary configuration with bands (I think). I only have seen it once in my life. I figure it was the precursor to the automatic transmission; it only needed some minor modifications. Huh, I thought you might remember that and add a comment?

The saying is "The proof of the pudding is in the eating thereof". This means that how good the pudding is (will the carriage advance along the bed) will become evident when you eat it (when you turn the lathe on and engage the feed). "The proof is in the pudding" does not make any sense. I love your videos. Subscribed and notified. Thanks.

That gearbox looks very similiar to the ones on my south bend lathes. I seem to remember that they have oiler cups on the top of the gearbox near where the bolts to attach to the bed are located. You lift the little cover and put a few drops of oil in to keep your gearbox lubed. Adding those oilers looks like it would be an easy project to work on down the road if you feel inclined to make some improvements to this machine.

Hi mrpete, An excellent video. But when it was hard to find a gear with a long thick hub, i would consider press fitting a new gear over the old gear whose teeth were cut. I think it would be easier than machining a thin bushing. But i am just an ameteur and my recommendation may create other problems that i can not foresee. Mehmet

From one industrial arts teacher to another, you and I were one of the few who maintained the classroom equipment. I would rather keep an old tool running, than to throw it to the curb for a tool that will only last a fraction of the time. I love when you put little comments in about kids being kids, and when your a teacher sometimes you think am I the only teacher having kids be this way.... love the videos, wish I taught more of metals, loved it when it was in high school, but the agricultural teacher has that curriculum. Keep up the informative videos...

Good pair of videos. However, they left me with 3 questions. First, how are you getting 108 speeds? Seems to me that having 1 change lever with 5 settings, and 1 with 8 settings, gives you 40 speeds from the quick change gearbox. Second, I think your gear count is supposed to be 23, not 21. Each change lever has 2 gears. One gear for each lever on a common axial, and a second gear that actually engages or disengages with the two clusters of gears. Third, why didn't you grind a HSS tool to cut new gear teeth in a piece of steel stock? I know the curvature of the tooth has a rather complicated geometry, but you could have used one of the gears you had as a template. Just grind a tool to fit in the gap between two teeth and you have a nice tool to cut a new gear.

Little concerned that gear is going to slip if the loctite lets go. It's generally not considered a good idea to press fit and use Loctite. Using paper (normal writing paper) between meshing gears sets them very nicely.

When you say that you have about 1/1000 of interference (4m19s) does that mean your bushing is bigger than the bore in the gear by 1/1000?
@movieguy7398

1/1000 smaller. if it was bigger it wouldnt fit.
@danielfuzatocipriano4574
@danielfuzatocipriano4574 10 жыл бұрын
***** actually, the bushing is larger than the bore. it does fit because the bushing shrikes as it is pressed in the bore, creating contact force. that is desired so that the friction between them is enough so that won't be any slip. that's what is called interference fit.

Although my 3 S Bends have cups, I still squirt up there with "chain oil" spray good stuff. # 90 rules. My first thought was using a key through the gears then press the bushing through the two instead of pins, but you sold your shaper......sam

I found a Craftsman 12 inch lathe (101.27430) on Craigslist. Price is right, looks good, from what I can see from the pictures. The ad states that when he purchased it, the quick change gear box came unmounted and he thinks it may be missing parts. Would it be difficult and expensive to find the parts? Thanks for the great videos. I was wondering if you had any guesses about how the gear was damaged to begin with? Also, would it be possible to create a cover for the underside of the gear box?
@chemech
@chemech 10 жыл бұрын
Your cover would have to allow the handles to move from side to side to set the various gear ratios. The long-dead guys who designed the quick change gearboxes decided that the open bottom design would allow most chips to fall out. Also, the cost of labor to repair & maintain equipment used to be low - nowadays, for most of us it's free! seeing as we are hobbyists, not running production shops... CNC machines do this function with variable speed motors instead...
@chemech
@chemech 10 жыл бұрын
I'm rebuilding the quick change gearbox on my Logan 2557... I looked at the problems involved in replacing the gears, and blew the money at Logan - I don't have the right machinery and spare bits of stock available to do what Mr. Pete has done here. Also, I had to repair/replace the two combined gears on that shaft, *and* the two gears on the tumbler handle. Some problems with abused gearboxes are common - the chips embedded in the dirty grease, and the abused teeth for example...

To those that said they would have paid up for the part. ????? I thought that the whole idea of owning old machinery was using it. Yes I know that you can easily end up earing a doller an hour. but you cracked the problem no matter how long it takes. The satisfaction of achievment is what this game is all about, Problem solving, It`s where the fun is. At least for me. Yes it may have cost 5 dollers to buy the part you just made and yes, it took most of the weekend. But YOU did it , Nuts I know but then, you got to a little nuts to spend so much of your life buried in a workshop, at least that is what a lot of people think.. I like being nuts,

About cleaning the Gearbox. Never used brake cleaner. I would simply place in a container , pour in half a gallon or so of diesel and give a good going over with a small . 1`" or so painbrush. moves almost everything, after that drain off all liquid and debris, in a can to settle out pour off later and use on the next project.You lose about 5% each time. Very cost effective. Then take outside and blast with a high pressure hose. This will remove any and all particles left. A little water won`t hurt it if it is then going to be dismantled. Obviously don`t leave it lying around wet. A good touch is to finish the washing with a kettle of boiling water. This will make it self dry in seconds. Also could you not add 2 or 3 oil nipples at relevant places on the gearbox cover directly above the gearing to facilitate future lubrication. Also perhaps add a thin sheet metal cover to the underside covering as much as possible to help keep things clean. Keep up the good work.

I know this video was uploaded quite some time ago but I thought it may help some of your dedicated followers to know that the gearbox you feature is known as the Norton gearbox, and there are many lathes of that era that use the Norton style. The Logan is of course one make, I think I am correct when I say that South Bend were the first, My Boxford (which is an evolved copy of the great South Bend 9 inch & Heavy Ten). My Sable also uses this box and the well known (Here in the UK) is the ever popular Myford. and I am sure there are many more that I don't know of. Having said that, although looking almost identical, to the untrained eye, there are differences between makes and even models. I know from bitter experience, that a 9 inch Sable AUD will not fit onto a Boxford AUD because there is a small discrepancy in hole centers. There are obvious differences between Metric and Imperial boxes the obvious one being the Leadscrew.

Thanks Mr. Pete I learned a lot watching these two videos. I had rebuilt a 9" South Bend about 10 years ago (no qc gearbox) and was impressed with the quality of the gears that came with it. From what I could see from your video the quality of the Logan didn't seem to be as high as South Bend. So the question I have is could offer your experienced opinion of the 'quality' of the four lathes you have in your shop ie Logan, South Bend, Atlas and Sheldon. I appreciate it's a tough question but am curious. As an aside I was the second owner of the south bend which hadn't been used much by the previous owner who bought it new in 1947. He just never cleaned so the rebuild was cleaning. Having said that I now have a Jet 10x24 and the quality level of the jet (Taiwanese) is far supperior to the South Bend. I had also had the Grizzly 10 x 20 and I would take it over the South Bend as well. Thanks again - Rod

Just bought one of these Logan 820 lathes, and I can honestly say after watching this...I would of paid the $199. Great repair and all, but if Logan Actuator has them, I would have just paid the money. It's likely that that would be the last time you'd every have to do it--and you would get TWO new gears, as both in that cluster would be replaced. GREAT videos though, on these Logan lathes. Great things to see before getting started with the thing--the videos on the South Band and Craftsman lathes is also very useful as well, as there are significant similarities between all these units. So thanks for making the effort to produce all of these invaluable resources.

Love the video, On our shop Harrison Lathe the very slowest gear got mysteriously damaged too. It happens when numptys change feed gears while running!!! I wouldnta paid $199.00 either. Gives you a more serious sense of satisfaction to do it cheaper, just inserting your skill & knowledge. I totally agree about compressed air. It is the quickest way to destroy machine tools in a production environment. When the tumbler box bolted on, it looked like there were 3 X screws & 2 X dowels. It is also lucky you had 2 other lathes with which to repair the third lathe!! Happy machining!!

I've been watching this video (and its predecessor) a bit obsessively... I'm trying to wrap my head around how this transmission actually works! The 9 gears on the right are clearly driven by the shaft with the keyway. The 5 gears on the left spin freely on the same shaft. How are those 5 gears driven? What's the difference between gears A, C, and E, given that they're the same size and tooth count (etc)?!?

Thanks Mr. Cane, I have an Atlas 10" and know not to use compressed air to clean my lathe off. I enjoy running my lathe, and I had a great shop teacher. Back in the days when I was in school my teacher would have me do most of the repairs that you said were not being made. Now I will take on most any thing that comes my way. Oh, that gear box goes for about $500 or better on ebay...

8 hours and you saved $75. $9.375 per hour. You work cheap!. :-) Your final assertion that the price was about right is right on the money.

Hey Mr. Pete...awesome video as usual. Nice to see someone else who's a real fixer rather than just a part swapper... Re: oiling those gears on the machine gearbox in place...as long as you have the gear box off anyway. It's a great idea to put a hole or two in the housing and fit some 1/8" bendable brass tubing in there to make an oil guide. Puts the oil exactly where you want it, and it goes on from the top, so no dry spots. works great, and gives you something to do while you're waiting for parts. 15 min worth of work, and you never have to worry about lubing them again. Can't imagine why they never thought to put them on there in the first place. I put a little rubber nib in mine to keep the dirt out. Got the idea from fixing sewing machines that have oil ways seemingly everywhere. Gotta warn you though...once you do it the 1st time, you'll be adding them in all kinds of things. Good Health to you sir...

Mr. P your videos are very helpful now I have a quick change gearbox by new all and my gear that is stripped is a 16 tooth just like yours that is damaged and I’m wondering where you got your gear from or how you looked it up if you still have this information I would really appreciate it if you could pass it along thank you for your videos

I once worked as the welder in a 10 man machine shop. They used compressed air to blast off everything, and yes....all the lathes were hammered, so were the 3 Bridgeports and 2 Radial arm drills.

Good video, Pete! What I 'd like to point out, is the use of even or odd counts of teeth. If you have two relating wheels with even numbers, that means that a damaged tooth will always meet the same counterpart and thus will not spread the wear evenly. The same goes with debris or blocked up material between the teeth. In some cases it 's just not possible, but in good gearbox design you'd like the odd numbers.

I don't know if it would help for any future reference but I *THINK* that gearbox is either identical or has interchangeable parts to some South Bend model lathes.

For what it's worth, my Dad showed me years ago how to adjust gear lash like those on the end of your lathe. Take a small box of matches, break one where the wooden end is the same length as your gear width. Put a dab of grease between two of the teeth on one gear, install the match stick into the bottom of gear and rotate through the meshing of the two gears. The matchstick should be crushed, but still be over half its original thickness. Once you get the hang of this process, you can even set rear differential clearances on car rear ends. On bigger gears, like car differentials, use kitchen matches. Great video, as usual. Thank you.

Some Logan 10" (Model 820, for example) have an asymmetric chip pan, although Logan Actuator has said that ALL such pans were symmetric. Should you have a Logan 10" lathe with an asymmetric chip pan, there is really only one way to install the lathe bed on the pan, and thereafter on the legs: wide side towards the operator, and narrow side away from the operator. The reason is simple: if installed wide side away from the operator, and narrow side towards the operator, the two gearbox selectors will hang up on the pan (but they WILL fully disengage), whereas the motor mount will not accommodate any but the smallest motor, and if it DOES accommodate a motor, it may be too far back to allow the belt tension to be properly adjusted. I replaced first rewired the lathe's original "Peerless" motor from 115 to 230 volts (and properly grounded it, for the FIRST time), and later replaced that motor with a 2 HP three-phase TEFC motor and a 2 HP single- and three-phase VFD. Typically, I operate this new motor system at its "sweet spot", 1200 rpm for my usual work, which is very often collet work in which I work-hold new Oilite (R) bearings which I machine to size when repairing other machines, usually not my own. In order to mount this new 2 HP motor, I first had to reverse the chip pan, for the motor clearance reasons stated above, and even after that, the new motor's connection box ("pecker-head", to some) was interfering with the motor mount's adjuster on the "peg leg" motor support system.. So, I disassembled the motor and reversed the motor's frame, thereby retaining the rotor and its end-caps in the required orientations, while moving the connection box towards the operator side, as required by the clearances which were presented to me. One might ask, "Why in the heck did you install a 2 HP motor on such a small lathe", to which I usually reply, "Well, it is a constant torque system, with the VFD set to 1200 rpm, and as such the motor is actually putting out only 1200/1800 = 0.67 times its rated HP, which is 1.33 HP, and that is not overkill for my work, or for my machine. I have, on occasion, operated my lathe as low as 900 rpm, thereby simulating an 8-pole motor, which would NEVER fit on this machine, and when operated thereby, the effective HP is only 1 HP. I appreciated your observation that Logan Actuator's gear prices appear to be "reasonable". However, I usually try to obtain Oilite (R) bearings locally, as time is always a factor. BTW, Logan DOES NOT use Oilite (R) bearings, Oilite (R) being a trademarked, hence a proprietary product of, I think, Chrysler, or someone like that. Logan uses Oilite (R) clones. The name of their supplier is actually impressed on the outside of the bushings. Castco, I think.

5 People in the world have no appreciation. Thank you so much for all these great vids. I just sold my Atlas 12" to a neighbor, a little BD-9N to a friend, but still have an SB 10K and 9" for parts. AND a Logan 200 in bad shape. Trying to decided if to put money into it. It has only a few change gears and a broken pulley gear. I am NOT a machinist LOL

I damaged TWO of those gears in my Logan 200 when I hit the screw advance by accident while re-facing a faceplate using the crossfeed. I did not know Logan still was in business (this was before the internet back in 1989!) and I would have bought them at the drop of a hat for $125. So I ordered by mail several #3 & #4 cutters from Travers tool and cut my own out of SAE 8620 stock - both gears - infact I made several sets as spares - I even carburized them and spot brazed them after hard turning away the side of tha larger gear and turned end of the small gear's carburized layer. My gears were brazed instead of keyed.

14:00 Next time you have that gearbox off, drill some holes over each gear so that you can drip some oil right on top of them. Thread each hole for a small thumbscrew to let you get dirt from dropping in.

Thanks Mr Pete, when I set the change gears I place a little strip of A4 paper between the meshing teeth and squeeze them together while tightening. Then when the paper is removed there is a nice bit of clearance.

I bet your pleased with that repair but also quietly satisfied with the result! I'd be thrilled if I could have done that. Personally I'm a bit surprised that the gear that engages with this gear was not also damaged and in need of repair / replacement. Thanks for putting up two great videos about this task.

Mr. pete I have Logan Lathe similar to this one, the problems I am having on my lathe is that I have a about .009 run out with any piece of stock I put in. A noticeable wobble is apperant, making it difficult to get a good first cut with out removing a lot of material. I changed the three chuck to a brand new one and no luck. I've heard the spindle bearings go bad but have had no luck finding them. Have you heard of this problem ? if so is there an easy fix ? or should I just consider the lathe bad ?

Mr Pete - you skipped over it, but I am having trouble getting all the gears on the one shaft back in the gear box (the shaft with the really long key). I am stacking up the gears with the key in place and then trying to insert the shaft into them. Every time I have tried this I end up pushing the key out of the opposite shaft bearing hole. Any tips for how you put yours back together? Really appreciate your channel and all the great videos! Thanks!

For setting the gear mesh on the banjo, you should be able to figure out the proper mesh then if you figure out how far away that is from the gears being bottomed. It would allow you to bottom them then snug the bolt enough to just hold it and set up an indicator on the banjo arm so you could tap it to the proper measurement.
