As I watch this, it occurs to me the last person in the tool box was probably the owner. Everything in there has a story, known only to him. I have 3 big rolling tool chests/cabinets with tons of tools and small engine parts and test equipment . I’m in my mid 60’s, and my son , an IT guy, has no interest. I shudder to think how my wife will get cheated on the price when I pass. Every tool, everything has a story behind it. If only they could talk.

Astute observation. I am a IT guy who has been a tool junkie all my life. When I retired I became a hobby machinist and have amassed 3 (full) Kennedy boxes and about a dozen more rolling carts and several lathes (there is no such thing as only ONE lathe!). In IT you fix problems all day, and in the mornings some bozo user has again screwed it up. In the endyou accomplished...nothing.... With a tool you can build. You can hold it in the original tool: your hand. THAT is the legacy I pass on.

Make sure before you die you leave your wife a list and actually what it’s worth or your son if they don’t want it or if you have a grandson and he is interested leave it to him I was lucky enough to get a fair share of my snap on tools from my great grandfather and I use them daily and take care of them I think better than he probably did

As a machinist fabricator who just buried my own father, I, my brother and sister, wished that our father had realized his mortality and had had the wherewithal to part with his collection before passing. He had an idea that the "stuff" would be his legacy. We just wished he had sold the "stuff" and used the money to do things for himself but mostly do things for our mom. We found so much "stuff" that had been collected or squirrelled away, parts, tooling and materials that had most assuredly been forgotten about for the inevitable "I may need that one day". Don't leave it for the wife and kids to deal with. It's an act of selfishness and vanity that really needs to be dealt with unless there is an explicit understanding to the contrary. I have a new awareness to the "if I haven't needed it in the past year or two" then maybe it should go. An example of something he could have sold was the mint condition adjustable Armstrong lathe dog set he had. We ended up adding those and all the tooling to the 20" lathe sale just to get it out of the shop. Believe me, I know the value of the tooling we threw in but we just needed it gone. Not everyone is in the same situation but I have spoken to so many lately that are/were in the same boat as we were and they echo this sentiment.

yeah the stories are almost visible though far from any wonderful tale without the guy that put the stuff away. 50-60 the tools accumulate and the parts and material. The wife will meet people, they'll get it damned cheap and show her a smile that will come with stories of thiers, or they'll have to listen while the lady shares her thoughts. Without you around your interests provide interaction and companionship for as long as the material stuff lasts. At the end of the day it's nice to meet folks when your partner has passed on. Or you might be the one dividing the lifetime of treasures? We just don't know, do we?

Assuming you paid $100 or less, you did great! The machinist box alone will sell for that much around here and I suspect you had more than $100 worth of fun and excitement at the auction and at home going thru it all. I use an old 8in Mititoyo dial caliper at work. It was passed on to me by a coworker when he retired in 2000. I still use it almost every day, and it still works as well as the day he gave it to me!

Please do not stop. When you are finished find a school interested and hand it over so the young people coming up can appreciate it. I remember leaving home at 15 and wanting to have a workshop. One day a fortnight I went to a technical school and I couldn't wait for that day to arrive. You may well get your name above the door and your name and inspirations will live forever. If you're interested, in the final box that was badly damaged by mice, the item with a micrometer head and two discs on either end is used for setting pinion depth on rear axles. The 2 round disc's will be placed in the bearing races and the mic will measure the distance to the pinion gear

Happy birthday, Mr. Pete! Those old indicators, micrometers and calipers are just simple clockwork and would be gold to someone with the time to take them apart and clean them up. Even that fogged up indicator lens could be rehabbed with some time and polishing compound.

Cleaning rust part 2: Degrease the parts first solvent then with soap and water and once they are clean, use the citric acid, water and some media in a tumbler or just a sonic cleaner if you're doing a bunch. It does a good job and it's an easy way to go. You'll need some inert media that the acid won't eat at if you use the tumbler, and a tumbler made for liquid.

That was no failed auction buy at all! you had a good time and so did we, so whatever you paid for it, it was worth it. you had a couple of items for your 'what is it?' videos, so don't just toss them out. With a little TLC, you might be able to restore some of the indicators and other measuring tools. 3 in1 oil works great for cleaning and lubricating threads. Dead indicators you can put them in a box, and send across the pond to Doubleboost, who will have a grand time with them, and also likely hand them to his friend Bob, who is a retired tool and die maker, who loves to repair these, or use them for spare parts to repair others. Not going to get them back, but they will find better use than as scrap metal.

Happy 80th! If you got half the entertainment from going to that auction, as I did watching it, then you're a blessed man. Personally, I would've paid no more than $35 for the whole lot. The most valuable items to me, are those dozens of loose cutting inserts in several of the drswers & boxes. Stay safe!

Depending on whether those micrometers are salvageable, I think it was worth it. You just gave me a reason to go thru a couple of drawers where I have what I now call scrap steel and GET IT OUT !!! Cleaning rust part 1: Ok, I sent it, a bag of white citric acid powder (I got the one with a label so the DEA won't be at the door). Again it's harmless cooking citric acid like for canning and preserving tomatoes. I don't advise anyone to put some in their nose, but if I was in a coma, sprinkle a little on my tongue and I might spring out of bed. Use some measuring spoons to mix what you want with water (I call it: vinegar, lemon or lime juice of course you can go more but not needed). A lot of times I just use a zip-lock bag, drop some bolts in there with some liquid and seal it up. You can squish it around between your fingers and get a good look at the parts without mixing up a quart for a pan. Still, it's cheap and safe and you can rinse and reuse the bags.

Happy Birthday! I like those 520 Kennedy boxes with the square corners. I bought a real nice one for $15 once, but I’ve seen a couple with $100 price tags (full of junk) that I didn’t buy. Even with the green paint I’d have done $30 for the box alone. Like you I have too many old micrometers, but the Sloucom is interesting, looking forward to seeing your video on that brand. I have two in my collection, a 1” and a 2-3”. I definitely would have picked up the cabinet for those drawers, I need more storage in my shop. I like these videos going through old boxes, when I buy them that’s my favorite part, time capsules.

Go to as many tool auctions as you like: well be here to cheer on the haul of goodies! That Cat calculator is a circular slide rule. Very convenient, since you never have to reverse the slide or go to the CF/DF scales. If well made (i.e. not a cheap die cut piece of cardboard), possibly a collector's item. The indicators could be interesting repair projects. The Fay dividers are very nice. Ditto the small model makers dividers. The indicator attachment is a right angle attachment. Starrett makes a few variations. Carbide inserts can be recycled for cash or turned into brazed tooling.ToT has a video on it.
