I have one of those piston ring filers. When building a performance engine, people still use these and similar tools to fine tune the gap of piston rings. Usually, you buy piston rings for a cylinder diameter that is 0.005" larger than the bore of the cylinder so that you have enough material to remove from the ring to get a tight gap, usually 0.0065 * the bore diameter for normally aspirated. If using nitrous oxide or boosted application, the factor is larger.

Yep, I still use one of these every time I build an engine.

Mr. Pete, I just want to say thank you for the What is it? Videos. They always interest me and stump me at the same time. The amount of engineering that went into developing the second gauge must have been incredible. It was done with a Slide rule, Drafting table and Drafting Squares. No computers of CAD. When that Gauge was developed, you were either damn good, or you were out.

Piston ring gap is critical to performance and life of an engine. The top piston ring is the compression ring. The second ring is mainly an oil scraper and up to 20% compression. The bottom rings return the oil from the cylinder wall to the crankcase. The second ring should be about 0.020" wider gap than the top ring and the same with the upper oil scraper in the thrid ring land. If the gap is too tight, it can seize in the bore and absolutely destroy an engine. Too loose and compression becomes blow by. The latest thing for any engine is called plateau honing for the cylinder walls. It consists of deep valleys honed into the cylinder walls so they retain oi. Oil is the reason compression can happen without failure. The cylinder walls are then honed with a CBN hone to knocke off the roughness and get to the proper size while not removing the deep scratches from the first operation using the diamond hone. The final bore is usually done by counting the strokes of the hone and it does take a person trained in this method. The result is higher compression, lower emissions and longer life. Ring gap is extremely important. Anyone building a high performance engine for the drag strip, dirt oval or road racing gets piston rings that require the end gap to be set and it takes a piston ring filer to do the job. It is not an obsolete tool, it is a manual version.

Oooo, with the caliper gauge, if you cut the rivet/firm join(?) of that indicating arm and reassemble in a way it moves very freely (might need to put some type of spring in there) and fix up the rollers, it could be really good for seeing ± on a wall thickness, if im understanding how it works and is assembled? Just set it your desired thickness and it will indicate your over or under and consistency. I made hollow vessels where you hollow stuff out through a small hole, for me wall thickness is super important to get consistent. This tool wouldnt be able to reach everywhere but for more basic vessels or ones with larger entry holes i think it would come in handy a lot.

haha i got the whole set of gal gauges (with the cheapest deals possible, well at least its GAL not offbrand) so I can actually see what im doing with welding. Took 2 days to take everything apart, clean it and reassemble it. that dual offset caliper thing... don't touch it to try to smooth it up unless you know what your doing. Mine was marginal, after some ideas of mine, it basically was seizing up. After alot more work I got it close to how I got it but not better. Of course after I bought all the tig stuff after fixing my miller dynasty I got through 1 tank of gas and realized im hemorrhaging money and I put it on hold since last year. Rod holders, gal gauges, regulators, dual regulators, copper back purge block, rods, tig torches, finishing the welding table. i dunno if I am back to being interested yet! rivets are so much cheaper!!!

also take a look through GAL gage catalog offerings. Its fascinating how they basically made like credit card analog computers for all these different purposes. You could probobly make it alot thinner if you are careful with some magnets or something, to make a true credit card. I find that product line fascinating, but I am super sure tradesmen get red when they see that pulled out, because that little thing can void 2 weeks of work LOL. A welders gotta feel like a mobster seeing the FBI ID when they see those little cards. I imagine when the inspector pulls out the hi-lo gauge its like seeing the secret service pull a BAR out of the trunk! The pipe fit up gauge is similar in design, and spring loaded, much like some kind of automatic rifle.

1. Calipers for checking out of round surfaces. 2 Weldors do not work to those fine tolerances. 3. 0.004" per inch of bore for gap.

Notice the piston ring grinder has a "rotate cutter in this direction" warning. Wondering how many people actually followed that. I guess it's also the reason for the tappered pins/guides.

what's surprising to me, is that you can often pick up real engines and cars from a junkyard much cheaper than you could pick up a plastic or aluminum model of the same engine or car. It's almost cheaper to get the real thing than it is to get a model now a days. It really depends on how much that tool or thing is and how much demand there is for it, and how much the person selling it really cares for the item, vs how much they want the $$.
