My only thing about clear storage is that it’s very neurodivergent friendly. Now, I will say that as someone with ADHD I do have most of my storage hidden in cupboards/closets/other closed storage, but within those units I try to keep everything as visible as possible because otherwise I just literally forget it exists.
@mrphoenixgrey4 ай бұрын
This is also true, these clear containers are great for inside hidden storage to keep it organized :)
@MerryWidow4204 ай бұрын
for sanitary reasons as well. I have several clear plastic totes in my kitchen cupboards to keep food in. Everything is separated into its own "kind" - rice in one, sugars in another, etc - and can be pulled out as needed, with everything safe from moisture, possible silverfish or worse, or just spillage and mess in the cupboard itself. But always ALWAYS behind a closed door.
@natasha83024 ай бұрын
I agree that open & clear storage can be helpful in a neurodivergent household. We use our small deep pantry for appliances storage and use the Ikea Ivar system as an open storage pantry after we had an infestation of pantry moths with in the first year of livingin our current house. We have to be careful because it can look messy. To avoid the it looking too messy, we use the small Ikea wooden boxes to group items items and it helps a great deal. So I guess you could say there is a time and place for open/ clear storage. So I guess my suggestion from one neurodivergent household to another neurodivergent house would be for lots of smaller open/ clear storage for is to group into additional storage. I wish I could add a picture for an example but the best way I can explain is how putting the soap & lotion pumps in/on the same dish can make the sink space look less clutter. It does take more effort to both accommodate my A.D.D. and not trigger my O.C.D. 😅 but it is worth it once you establish a system that works for you!
@natasha83024 ай бұрын
I guess what I am trying to say is you are both right but with a bit more effort both issues can be addressed. I think the hardest part is having to test out what system works for you. I found that too closed off and too doesn't work for me. So grouping in slightly closed/ slightly open bins ( Ikea Knagglig). Note that before I switched our pantry over to the Ikea Ivar system I asked my friend for their opinion. They were considered about it looking too cluttered but they approved with our approach. So large bulk items (cereal, flour, sugar, ect) we use a variety of different sizes (similar style) of Tupperwareish containers with silicone seals (did that because of pantry moths) and then smaller items (snack, popcorn, instant ramen, ect) I put in the small wooden Ikea bins. I do think closed storage would look better but this is our work around. With this system we have a lot less food waste and it makes making a shopping list so much easier. Just be patient and test out different storage options to find what works for you. So think of storage like furniture in that it doesn't have to be matchy matchy but make sure they work together & don't clash.

Ultramodern has the warmth of a Soviet gulag. A textured rock for a bathroom gives that lovely outdoor bathroom feel, but all I can think of is all the mineral deposits and dust it makes my head ache. My ideal kitchen and bathroom have smooth tile with a floor drain for fast and easy cleaning. The corner tub - my bathroom at my parent's house was tight and a corner tub actually worked. There was no extra wasted space, for that layout it worked. I am 6' and the corner tub (plain soaking) was wonderful, but it was oblong and had a corner seat most of the way up the wall of the tub - not the triangle shape. It was one of the few tubs my 6'4" husband and I could both fit in (bit snug but we fit). So I would say a corner tub with an oblong design works if it works with the bathroom layout.

I went back to one of those in my renovation, I have the drain board on each end and I wouldn't trade it for the world now, it is so convenient, I can wash and put dishes on one side while cooking and still have washed fruits/veggies on the other, no more trying to find a spot to drain something washed without water draining everywhere, and my sink is larger than a farm sink.

Lol. The funny bit is I have a cleaner who comes once a week because I am disabled. She does a great job through out the house but I noticed the dishes and cutlery were often still grimey after she had cleaned. It's hard finding a good cleaner, so rather than risk losing her, I just pull up a seat, put a podcast on, and get the dishes done at a leisurely pace the evening before she comes to clean. Gives her more time to do other tasks and it saves me having to redo the dishes after she's done them. I suspect people who have dishwashers forget you have to really pay attention to what your doing when washing by hand. Anyways, my new love is dishes! Lol

@nannem97164 ай бұрын
Nope. There's gonna be bacteria. It's just plain biology. Dead skin cells plus natural bodily oils plus moisture equals bacteria! Add soap film to that and it becomes the perfect place for things to breed. As much as I love the thought of a jetted massaging bath, the reality of it just grosses me out. It doesn't matter how meticulously clean you are either (which most people are NOT), because there's always going to be some area that you cannot access to clean.

The farmhouse looks cheap because it's not authentic. I grew up in a farmhouse that was over 100 years old. It is essentially a curated space of things that are used often and things that we love. Every farmhouse around us was different- authentic. This modern farmhouse look is boring and isn't personal at all with the whites, greys, and the occasional neutral tones and of course a barn door somewhere on something 😒
@nannem97164 ай бұрын
YES!!!! That's exactly the problem! You hit the nail right on the head. Modern farmhouse is inauthentic and usually made with cheap, modern materials. There are usually no well loved antiques, which were useful, purposeful things that slowly became treasures. It's all fake stuff that's been cheaply mass produced, new, and never used for anything but decor. And all those barn doors hanging randomly wherever, just to say you have one, are so out of place and boring! I'm sure since you grew up in a real farmhouse, you must find this trend repulsive.

I have personal negative experience with the boob lights. My family moved after a natural disaster screwed up everything and our new home was 2 stories. Kitchen, living room, utility stuff, half bath downstairs, and two bedrooms with private full baths upstairs. The stairs were a straight shot along an exterior wall. And when you reached the top, one bedroom was right there, and the other was at the end of the hallway doubling back next to the stairs. This middle section was illuminated by one boob light. Directly over the banister that separated the walkeay and the stairs down. So when the bulbs died before we even signed the deed, i was tasked with changing the bulbs, and unholy mother of sin DO NOT INSTALL THESE THINGS ABOVE STAIRS because that was traumatizing! I was the only one tall enough to reach the boob light nipple and I had to change two bulbs while standing on a step ladder as my mother held my belt so I didnt fall over the banister and down the stairs. Sconces would have made this home a thoudand times better and safer. Boob lights are pure evil.

This point is the only one I question. I’m on my 3rd home with a farmhouse sink and I have never had issues with water coming over the lip. Never! I’ve done dishes, including big pots or slow cookers. I’ve washed my mid and small sized dogs in them. You might see a drip or two as you are cleaning up, but nothing that would ruin cabinets. I guess I would ask…how messy are you? Do you clean up after yourself? When I do anything significant at the sink I always take my sink cloth and make sure there’s no sitting water at the back by the faucet or along the sides. I’ll run the cloth along the sink front whether it’s a standard sink set up or a farmhouse sink. If the odd time a bit of water got over the lip you’d notice. I just didn’t get this point at all.

I have my taste which I want to enjoy amidst my surroundings but these are objects and furniture that are portable. The structure of my environment is very carefully considered before I decide to get creative with an eye towards my heirs and how they will dispose of (or hold onto) what was once mine. I'm old now. Let's be realistic and practical.

I like that someone is finally distinguishing between “storage” and “display”. I “display” interesting, beautiful, quirky, or cherished possessions. I “store” shoes, bags, household linen when they are not in use. My shoes and bags are on display when I’m wearing them. My linen is on display when it’s on the bed or hanging on a towel rail. When these things are not fulfilling their function, I don’t want to see them. Clear containers are convenient for many purposes, especially in the pantry or craft storage, but they need to kept behind solid doors.

The best part of Sunday mornings is a new DD video 😊 Crowdsourcing opinions here: i live in Montana, so an all-black exterior on the house really wouldn't work here. But one thing i've always loved is a black roof. They look so sharp and beautiful, but they might not be so great from a practical standpoint; i'd love to hear from folks who have one. Thank you. Thanks for another great vid, DD 🙂

DD mentioned that if you have good insulation it would be ok. Maybe google how contractors designers do this so the house is not hot. Good Luck🍀. A black roof goes with everything. I see them around so maybe they are being designed so they don’t make the house hot.

We painted our house black years ago-but our eaves are extremely deep, so we do not have much problem with dust, dirt, bird splatter, and the home orientation makes it perfect for us as far as passive heating/cooling is concerned. By painting our house black, we reduced our electric bills in the winter by 10 to 15%.

Onemore thing about the farmhouse kitchen sink. I find they are usually installed will below the countertop height.the linear horizontal line is broken and most egregiously, they are back breakingly low for anyone of normal adult height to wash dishes while maintaining an upright posture. My back hurts just looking at them.

I agree with everything you said except two: (1) I think farmhouse sinks are ugly; and (2) I think freestanding tubs at a diagonal can be very pretty. You have to have a BIG bathroom and something pretty in the corner, but they can be lovely. A pain to clean, but lovely.

If you like to read; Richard Gump (of the Gump Family that founded a famous San Francisco Store in 1861) wrote an accidentally hilarious book "Good Taste Costs no More" . The mid century line drawings are delightful, the characters he created to illustrate stories about taste decisions are camp. Richard was a real character. Gumps was known for Japanese products, he visited Japan frequently. Often accompanied by important Japanese dignitaries, a line of cars would visit craftsmen all over Japan. Richard loved ladies of a certain type, so he often kept the cars waiting as he and his lady had "fun" in the countryside.His explanation for holding the entourage up? He was composing poetry.

I really appreciate the comments about cleaning some of these things. (Also in hearing someone other than myself say, ' well that's stupid' about them.) I really appreciate the comments about the farmhouse sinks - I really want to get one, one of these days, and knowing about the lip underneath is a great point to remember. I like not just the size and functionality of them, but I feel it would be so much easier on my lower back. Only people who have actually washed dishes by hand (or who have a tweaky lower back - I attest to both) will truly appreciate that.

Completely agree on the corner garden tubs .. I’m not a human soup bather, I’m all about an awesome shower so it’s always been a huge waste of space.. all of the basic builders put them in but don’t add a hand held so it’s a nightmare to clean. Then they put it in front of a huge window that you can’t get to in order to clean & you have to cover it unless you’re into being an exhibitionist. 😣😒 And the boob lights ! Omg yes, so awful! Such a biotch to change the bulbs too.. you need 4 hands to do it without dropping the damn glass boob part when unscrewing it. I hate them with a passion. 🤬 I highly recommend changing them all out at once if you move into a house with that has them to save yourself the years of aggravation. Glass shower doors are the worst. Only way to keep them clean is to not use the shower.. 🙄 When I remodel my bathroom the garden tub is coming out, the window is gone & the huge shower will not have glass doors but a wall of smooth tile. 👍👍

I have a soapstone FARMHOUSE sink and LOVE it, and it is NOT on a 36"base cabinet. I had it custom made to fit the 30 inch base cabinet, and having it "protrude" one inch actually HELPS protect my cabinetry, because the water drips do not curl under the sink to curve back to hit a cabinet! Plus I have virtually no water dripping over the edge, it is too far from the faucet and it is not hard to keep washing inside the sink perimeter. Plus we installed wood cabinet doors (and plywood boxes, no MDF), but the cabinet under my sink is the most pristine cabinet because it is PROTECTED by the sink. The sink is deep and nearly square and fits everything I want to wash. Yes to keep it looking great and free of scum on a darker surface, I soap-sponge it clean most days, but shouldn't we clean our sink more often? Takes one minute and looks fantastic. And I get to clean over a living surface (because I consider stone to be living). It is divine! And there are stock smaller farmhouse sinks, no need to go custom. It is the best sink I've ever used, and I have a lifetime of being the family dishwasher in countless kitchens.

I have to 100% disagree with you on the textured showers. So many installers freak out about having to install this and try to scare homeowners away and tell them it's a nightmare to clean. It isn't if done right! These installers know that these showers need to be thoroughly sealed and it is time consuming. They just don't want the extra steps and work. Find installers who pride themselves in their work and thoroughly seal the stone and grout and the water beads off the stone and grout no problem! I did this in my shower to get the old world tuscany look and I LOVE it! I've had it for 2 months and water still beads off no problem, still white as day one and is meant to last for years if done properly! If it doesn't last many years, so what. When the water stops beading off, reseal. It isn't expensive and not that time consuming to reseal. Bottom line, get what you want and use the proper sealant. It's FINE!

My own two cents: Point 1. On board. There is, however, one very particular exception where this 'spacey' look does work reasonably well, if you have the space and money to swing it. This is when you are outfitting a dedicated computer room for either gaming or work, especially where your work requires heightened concentration. On the level of aesthetics, the mix of tech and classical or eclectic has always been an issue. On the other hand, a 'clinical', spaceship-like interior for a small space where you computer set up is located, might be very practical, as there are fewer distractions; plus, it is the most normal background for PCs and the like in aesthetics terms. Can work well with a box room. (This is a UK thing, the small room that is marketed as a 'third bedroom', but where you cannot fit a grown person's bed or, if you can, anything else. They are difficult to make into storage or closets either, so a computer room is a decent idea for them, and the ultra-modern minimalist fits, because there is little space for anything else.) Point 2: The backsplash alone is not enough, I find. This little bit behind the sink and the wall is always full of water, particularly if your sink is small, which they are frequently in apartments everywhere (as well as literally almost anywhere in the UK, whether apartment or house). I have designed my sink to have an extended and elevated rear part that goes up the wall (think, like a headboard, but for a sink), which is also curved. So, whatever water splashes, never stays, but runs down into the sink. This, however, needs to be custom built. I haven't really seen it commercially available. The rest are completely on point. Well, maybe clear storage containers need a bit more discussion, because if they are hidden, no one sees them, but when you need to fid something, you can see where it is. But thank you for mentioning the hideous glass shelves in the bathroom! Be well. N.

I will tell you how the bugs get in the boob lights. The birds drill out the screens covering the round hole ventilation in the attic, or the screens rust. The bugs come in the attic and down through the electrical holes. That is one way. The other ways…well, you gotta look at your sliders and screens, etc.

I was going top get just a one sink stainless the big kind. but you need far too much water to do a few dishes. I stayed with my contractors sinks, under-mount and they are deeper than my old ones. I love them. I haven't used my dishwasher yet. I'm just one. Far easier to wash as you go. Plumber said to use it at least once in a while or the seals will become brittle. Good advice.

I have to agree with you when it comes to the clear storage. I never understand why people would want to have everything exposed. I call it visual vomit 🤮 I am also a designer and I do videos here on KZbin as well and that’s one of the things I have talked about in the past. I also hate the ceiling faucet. I think it looks stupid and I’m glad you pointed out putting in a lip for the farmhouse sinks because they are beautiful, but they will ruin your cabinets as you said so people need to order an extra set of doors or at least put in that extra lip and I agree with you. I hate the boob light. It is so ugly.

EVERYTHING you said was valid, some of these are not the worst offenders but you never said it was. In a closed closet clear storage is easier to find junk. A clear bin of spices inside a cabinet is convenient for me, but this is not your point. Anyone that would leave this stuff out, well, you cannot help them. Shelves with good looking baskets is actually a good thing, only if it looks great with empty baskets that are interesting and curated collection. No shelves in the shower no matter what material is going to look good IRL. Try a stainless steel bin for all this junk. Belfast sinks were never a thing in the Americas, not many immigrants brought their sink with them on the boat. They were never produced here. To emphasize the sink and probably the window above, try a cafe curtain and maybe remove the doors under sink with a curtain. This is a timeless look and adds the desired charm, also add vertical lines against all the horizontals. This offers daylight yet the needed privacy. Daddy probably hates cafe curtains, but no matter the style of the house it can work. Cafe curtains, ONLY for kitchens or eating areas, never anywhere else. Roman shades don't give the privacy where needed and just block the sky and light. They add more horizontal lines and the style is always wrong. "Bottom up shades" will always look weird, even stupid.

I’m sorting items for a craft into translucent containers. It’s easy to see what’s in the box or be able to see the index card piece as a label set in rather than stuck on. They are in my basement where all my sewing tables and machines are. So nobody else sees them.

All black exterior means that even with extra insulation you’ll live in a sauna box. You’ll need a good air conditioner, but a word of caution, a lot of professionals oversize a/c units and then they freeze up due to lack of airflow for the size of the unit. Plus you’ll be massively increasing your power consumption. As nice as the all black look is, it would be a massive NO for so many reasons.
@jolenenevins37613 ай бұрын
Ok, so the thing I like about clear storage is I can see what's in it. When you live in the desert or just somewhere that your stuff could get ruined or need to be cleaned often, wiping a box is easier than cleaning all the stuff in the box.
