Flora & Airto are my ex-inlaws. Airto could "play" anything!! He found an instrument in Africa that he used for the purcolator sound on the Maxwell House commercials. It sat on the coffee table so the grand kids could play it. Find, if you can his tamborine & whistle solo. He got a standing ovation every time I saw him perform it. The best percussionist I've ever seen.

Saw him with one of my two best friends at Yoshi's in Oakland. We both broke out laughing when he started to play one of the walls with his drum sticks during a tune. Such understated elegance and humor from a master musician.

Force of nature. Fourth World was one of the greatest live bands I have ever seen. I saw the version with electric bass player Gary Brown and Giovanni Hildalgo on congas and extra percussion. They also had a sax/flute player and separate keyboard player. Gary Meek was gone by then but his replacements were great players. Flora came out in leather pants and was a complete rockstar. She was amazing. Airto played his pandero solo and made it sound like a full samba section. The whole club was not just dancing but going crazy. He blurs the line between music and magic.

He was in Loosdrecht Jazz 1972 (with Weather Report) in the parking lot looking for pebbles for his rythm boxes. We, in awe, quickly rolled a joint.. When we proposed him the smoke he said he didn't need that.. Us in awe again..

I discovered Airto at age 15 while listening to a "Krakus Polish ham" commercial on WRVR radio, NYC back in the early 70's. The DJ used an Airto tune from the album "Fingers" in the background while he talked about the ham! Coincidentally, I had just joined Columbia House record club and was awaiting my first shipment of 13 records for a dollar. Low and behold, somehow I ordered "Fingers" with those first 13, I guess without even knowing who Airto was, and when I played the album, it blew my mind. It still blows my mind. I love this guy. I love his music. I feel so lucky to have stumbled on it.

Great insight into Airto and his percussion development and influences. I had the good luck to sit 2 meters away from him whilst his blew us away in Ronnie Scotts in London. I sneaked my camera in and took some black and white shots with a very grainy film, they came out great. When I left I was speechless and had to go and sit quietly to take in what I had just witnessed it was very spiritual. thanks Airto I will never forget it.

yeah NETO! killing it my brother! and everyone else also. Airto is the most underrated musician of the '60s and '70s. as good a drummer as any of the superstars, the best percussionist, and a great writer and singer.
@mancuniancandidatem2 жыл бұрын
I love Airto's singing voice, as well as all of the vocal effects he is able to make. His voice blends perfectly with Flora's and they have written some amazing tunes. You are totally right about his drumming and percussion. He makes it sound as easy as breathing. One of the best, and an amazing ambassador for Brazilian music.

What a beautiful worth watching doc.! Thanks for sharing!! I saw Fourth World, in the 1990's in Ann Arbor, MI, at the (new) The Ark venue - what a mind blowing concert, just a beautiful evening for the audience! Ended up seeing two gigs in a row that same night. Also, I had the pleasure to hang out and chat a bit with the band afterwards - amazing human beings, forever thankful myself! I know Airto is not feeling well lately - so I want to send him my best wishes of a solid recovery and peace of mind! We love your music man! Abraço amigo!!

Airto has been very succinctly described by Cannonball Adderley of having extra qualities most Brazilians artists do have. This testimony has been brought to the fore in this extra ordinary demonstration. Thanks for the upload....very educative.
