@stuntedwriter96595 жыл бұрын
If you are in a dark cave using Darkvision to see, you are unable to make out colors. So, you have to look for physical characteristics that can be made out in shades of gray. Tentacles from the face are pretty good as far as that is concerned.
@neophrem24085 жыл бұрын
Made me laugh xD
@stuntedwriter96595 жыл бұрын
@Alex Davies First, there are different shades of gold. second, you don't have to get that close, those whiskers are very prominent. Third, there could be other factors.
@stuntedwriter96595 жыл бұрын
@Alex Davies By the time you can see his shades of grey he can see you. Gold dragons have darkvision to 120ft, however, normal darkvision only goes to 60. You would need to extend your darkvision beyond 120 ft for it to matter either way. Also, you could see his whiskers at 60ft as long as you can see his face.
@Darknight44345 жыл бұрын
@Alex Davies actually no, it wouldnt be that easy You could compare colours, but for it to be effective you would need to hold both the coin and the dragon closely so that different in light (in this case, lack of it) could make misjudge something. And even in dark, is hard to sepparate things like silver and copper or gold apart. Aside that, it depends on the age. Gold dragons dont simple shine, they are a bright yellow when they are born, but old dragons would have all their bodies covered in mettalic tones. With the sun or fire brightening it, he would look shiny as the sun itself, but in the dark, he would just appear as a dragon Just like a house cat or a tiger, who can be bright orange, but when they are hunting at night you are simply unable to say something other than "they arent black/ they have some light colour"

I love all this dragon lore. My favourite D&D manual was the Draconomicon from 2nd edition. In particular the part where they explained mixed dragon-kin. My first Draconic BBEG was a Purple Dragon. I have an interesting concept: A gold dragon that shares a mostly abandoned castle with a lich now the reason the gold dragon shares the castle is because 1. The lich occupied the castle first and 2. The lich is morally good Now one of the interesting things is that the lich is still a necromancer and he throws parties that last for years at a time wich annoys the gold dragon sometimes to the point of leaving just so that he can sleep and that literal army of undead partygoers mainly just keeps growing to the point that most of his undead allies have free will

The Sorcerer in my party is a dragon-blooded Tiefling, with Gold dragon blood. (one side of the family had the dragon blood, the other supplied the Tiefling part). This SERIOUSLY screwed with the head of the Gold Dragon the party encountered in the Rise of Tiamat campaign, especially since I had it that it was that SAME gold dragon that the draconic ancestry came from, and he could smell it.

A couple of Gold Dragons debating ethics and philosophy while disguised as mortals would be an excellent way at solving the "DM is going to bring their new significant other to the table who has never played before" scenario. That way the new player could come with an NPC who challenges the new player, only stepping in when the new player is significantly failing.

I actually love taking inspiration from Shadowrun when it comes to polymorph and dragons, which helps to answer the conundrum of: "Why would a superpowerful creature NOT be in a small form if it could retain all its powers?" And the answer, because it would become vulnerable. A 50ft dragon might be able to walk through normal doors and corridors or pass amongst the local populace while polymorphed as a human, but because of this, the dragon would also be much more vulnerable and weaker in this form. They could be killed much the same way as any human could. Polymorph and form changing seems to be in overabundance in DND much like Darkvision, and I enjoy giving creatures a valid reason to stay in their original forms without looking like fools.
@Kahtisemo5 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Shadowrun but I remember seeing somewhere that because Polymorph works differently for Gold Dragons, they retain all their stats. I found this while trying to make a character who was really a Dragon in disguise and saw that and it led to the joke of while with the party he would pretend to get knocked out way sooner than he would for legitimately (because if he loses consciousness for real he'd revert to his true form) and after a bit the cleric seemed to catch on that he was faking his injuries but assumed he was just being a coward. So it lead to the hilarity of her getting aggressive in fixing him up to a point of her telling him to "suck it up, butter cup" and showing the others he's fine. Maybe I misread it, but I found it funny. You'd think someone might have been tipped off sooner since his name was "Gil"

I like Silvers the most, mostly as a mixture of visuals and because some odd things about them scream 'good dragon' to me. The gold dragon is also like that, but it's more Eastern design sort of made that a default thing to me, while the Silver is much more clearly a Western dragon but also still clearly a noble being. That they serve as a direct rival to the Red Dragon, the most powerful of the Chromatic dragons also helps there.

Once you brought up their mating habits, you reminded me of the time my character in the last campaign I was a part of had to scare off a gold Dragon. Earlier, my character had accidentally got himself married to a silver dragon. The silver Dragon decided she liked my character enough that she wanted to stick with him after they sorted things out. However, a gold Dragon who had set his sights on my wife wasn't too happy about this arrangement and decided to pester us until my character had enough and proceeded to beat the ever-living daylights out of the jerk. This almost started a war between the gold and silver dragons until Bahamut the Platinum Dragon stepped in and told everyone to chill and the gold Dragon who started this mess to lay off, or he would let my character hunt him down, kill him, and eat him. That part was more of a bluff than anything since that would have gone against my alignment. But hey, it worked.

Red dragon is my favorite as I play assassin more often than not, basically stealth is a pretty useful skill for scouting, damage, getting past foes I would never be capable of fighting myself, pickpocket (way easier while sneaking), and uses Dex which is kinda great how the class relies on that one stat allowing me to focus on it more- bad if diseased but that is what the cleric is for. Reason why that my favorite dragon is red is because a gold would not help a neutral/evil character, a red dragon though is admittedly hard to convince to work with you but that is what meat and treasure are for. Basically one session I managed to barely yoink a red dragons egg and managed to form a bond with the hatchling discussing strategy and feeding him- basically when old and durable enough he can attack others out of the blue and while he deals with the tanky barbarians, clerics, etc. I deal with the other rogues and go directly for mages and then join on his end where we basically clean up shop. Our teams mage even got him some 1st-2nd level spells. That was a very fun campaign.

I certainly think if a gold dragon sees you commit a moral failing a crime or whatever it will cast suitable judgment upon ya. one of my pcs was a young gold dragon who was tasked by her parents to kill a bandit horde who were attacking and killing travellers and villagers she being an avid reader was taken with the idea of adventure, good and morality being grey she opted for pacifism, and rather than kill the bandits she tried to talk to them her parents saw this and had to intervene to stop her getting hurt, but they weren’t happy with her they were furious they saw this as a chaotic act going against their wisdom and the law so they polymorphed her and stuck her in Dragonborn form, she wandered the world and became a paladin but that’s a different story, I do think gold dragons are extremely lawful, I think all dragons are either extremely lawful or chaotic with their acts of good and evil being very alien to us as they think through those lizard brains of theirs and they should be role played accordingly, they can commit great good or great evil but it’s always through that dragon lense,

My actual question going into this video: Where do gold dragons get their hordes from? It's gotta come from somewhere, right? Do they hire themselves out explicitly as dragons, clashing with their tendency to remain in disguise? Do they keep the ill-gotten gains of bandits and villains despite any protests to the contrary? Or does every gold dragon have a dark and terrible past of looting and bloodshed that it keeps hidden at all costs? Add this heedless and globally organized gold-dragon-mafia with collective control over vast sums of wealth and hordes of magic items into the picture and it seems reeeeaal sketchy to me.

On a serious note, if there is any flaw that I tended to see in descriptions is that gold dragons tend to think that they know better than their lessers. 4e's Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons (a good source overall if you need a more moraly ambiguous take on a metallic) says that gold dragons can grow tyrannical or distant in their rule over mortals, and mentions Edarmirrik, a gold dragon demigod with portfolio of exactly that. Another example would be Mengkare of Pathinder's default setting of Golarion; seeing humans as pitiful and broken by the world, he created the island kingdom of Hermea where he tries to bring the human potential to maximum in his "Glorious Endevaor" with education, magic, and eugenics. Even the setting creators are not sure if he can be considered evil or not.

@@TenositSergeich Isn't that kinda common to all dragons tho' ?
@TenositSergeich5 жыл бұрын
@@KalaamNozalys I guess that in gold dragons it is the most visible and dangerous amongst metallics. Brasses and coppers are tricksters, bronzes are warriors, Silvers are paladins, and other metallics are even weirder. While they can assume possitions of leadership, they do so rarer than golds, the sages and rulers, who also tend to lord over much larger expanses when they do so.

This series has given me an idea for an NPC: a chromatic dragon who isn’t evil and makes their lair near a town, but seven miles away so the town doesn’t need to deal with the dragon’s magical effects on the area. They’ve perhaps even made friends with the town, maybe acting as a guard in exchange for food and items for their hoard. The party just so happens to see someone take a cart toward the obviously hazardous territory of the dragon, the border of which is only a mile away.

I absolutely adore gold dragons. I have ever since first perusing through my friends collection of D&D 3.0 and 3.5 books. The way they look, the way they act, everything about them to me is amazing. In the homebrew campaign setting I have been working on for the better part of 20 years and have run multiple times, one of the most powerful creatures the PCs eventually encounter is a brilliant and playfully mischevious Great Wyrm Gold Dragon named Kalyik. Ive probably written more about Kalyik than anyone would ever want to know, but everyone who meets him ends up loving him, I think because hes so fleshed out in my mind as a character that hes very real. So thanks for giving me a few tidbits that I didnt know about golds to add to his back story!

There are a group of dragons (I can't remember which) that would steal white dragon eggs and raise them to be good. Now in a homebrew setting you could just say that a gold dragon clan decided... "hey how about we just have chromonic dragons kill chromonic dragon?" "Sounds good. How do we do that?" "Steal chromonic dragon eggs?" "That doesn't sound very goo..." "Shut up you. We are doing the steal evil dragon eggs plan." Edit: Crystal dragons capture white dragon eggs. There a part of the gem dragons.

Arguably, the Adamantine Dragons (in the 2.0 MM, and ported to 3.5 in DR 321) are more powerful than the Gold. From the breath weapon, to dealing damage with physical attacks one size category larger than their size, to their SLAs. Not to mention they are fierce and deadly guardians of the Fields of Bytopia, preferring to tear apart any intruders first, and ask questions later...

Most likely the whiskers are just a remnant from the days when they were the Chinese style dragon. It would be a good way to both differentiate them from the similar metallic colors quickly and serve as a way to memorialize the history of the species. If I had to guess, I would say that is the most likely answer to why they have them.

When I first watched this video, I was so confused when you pointed out the whiskers as some fascinating differentiating detail about their design aside from the fact they have BLINDINGLY GOLD SKIN. I kinda thought it was a joke. But then I watched the rest of the series and realized it was meant to help in cases of looking at the dragon through Darkvision or when looking at only a skeleton.
