A thing I always found fascinating is cousin Beth's conflicted expression after it's revealed that the 'demon' stuff is just a handy legend. Like she's taking stock of her own life. Sure, she defends them after and leaves with Tara's 'family', but I like to believe that she started a long, painful journey of realising that this systematic oppression and abuse of the McClay women also extends to her. In my headcanon, she eventually got out of there too.

Let's do a head count. We've got the longest living Slayer who stopped multiple apocalypses. A vampire who earned himself the moniker of Slayer of Slayers. A human who has faced various evils without any powers/magic to protect his loved ones. A girl who was originally a force of pure energy that existed since the dawn of time. Two powerful and brilliant magic users who are deadly when pushed over the edge. An ex-vengeance demon who tortured men for 1000 years. And the McClay family have managed to piss off every one of them. I can't believe they actually thought they had any power here at all when they were basically standing in a room with the supernatural version of the Avengers. But then again, I suppose to outsiders, the Scoobies do look like normal people. It isn't until the time calls for it that they reveal what they can really do.

I don't think Spike really cares. His personality is such that he likes the attention, so when he realizes the truth of the situation before anyone else, he steps up and proves it in a way only he can. The pain is worth it for those few moments of him being able to say "ha, I figured it out first", even if he doesn't actually say it.

I loved Spike for this. He always reminded me of Joel Pepper. Hated to be praised for doing good - but did it anyway. Just for those he loved.

Thanks for the comments. I was just so impressed at his overall comedic chops down to the way he gently taps her on the shoulder and then not only punches her but does it with proper form like he’s in a fight. But love this scene overall. I wonder how long it took the writers to come up with “next of kin” vs “family” in the dialogue. It’s so so so much better and more skillful than the writing I see on teen shows now there’s no nuance/skill/call to actual thought. Buffy had such a great mix to the point that I loved the show as a teenager and now as a 34 year old I realize I MISSED so many subtle little things that rewatching the series and thinking critically is worth it. College students write thesis papers based on this show. No one is writing papers about Pretty Little Liars.

@@micheles.1179 I think it's because Buffy was a philosophically based show: taking life's big questions and turning them into monsters. It was a brilliant concept that you could write a million papers on. Have to say I didn't always like the way it was executed; but that's coming from a philosopher; rather like a historian complaining about the Tudors. A TV show still has to be accessible and entertaining, not a textbook (though I'm sure Giles wouldn't mind if it was . . . 😄)

Umm, pretty much everyone on Buffy's side of the room knew a lot about demons, it just took Anya's plain old innocent curiosity to wonder what kind of demon Tara was supposed to be.

@@JakkFrost1 and what probably started that was the "disgusting" part. If the family had come up with an answer and told her what kind, Anya's next line would more than likely have been "But why are you calling ______ demons disgusting? Some of my best friends are _______s."
