@restlessbutterfly48583 жыл бұрын
It could be that cats are naturally sensitive creatures to magic and recognize in both the magical ancestry that they carry in their blood, even without these two being wizards or witches. Because if you think about it , from a Squib a wizard or witch can be born (even if they cant do magic they can father a magical being) ... and that most mean that squibs have unactivated magic in their blod, like a recesive gene 🤔 ... so is posible thats why cats stick to them in such a way.

@naruvoll3 жыл бұрын
That is an EXTREMELY good point. She's not Mrs. Eileen Norris or Eileen Norris, she's just Mrs. Norris. And it's not only that everyone else has a first name, it' also that no one else has a title. Professor Snape is labeled Severus Snape. The Headmaster, Professor Albus Dumbledore is labeled Albus Dumbledore. If she's labeled because she's human or ex-human she's labeled with two exceptions to the naming scheme rules. So I think you're absolutely right. "Mrs. Norris," that exact phrase, is her exact name. The map also clearly doesn't do any fancy exact parsing of names. Dumbledore isn't even labeled Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, the map only does first Given name, Albus, and Family name, Dumbledore. Which means if the map was labeling her as a human, her Given name would have to actually be spelled "Mrs." instead of that being the conventional abbreviation for Mistress pronounced the conventional [Mis-iz] which sound isn't reasonably spelled Mrs. Even if Mrs. was the normal Mrs. and she's the exception to the rules, the map has to be ignoring the "Eileen" and have also updated her title from when she attended Hogwarts. So it had to keep track that she got married but not of her real name. ...I think you've actually debunked this one. Really good point.

@JustinTK416 Жыл бұрын
I like the idea of squibs attracting vaguely magical creatures. Like imagine part of the usual quirks of being just touched by magic is a very vague kind of ESP that makes you aware of magical power. And squibs have an aura of magic, but are like a candle, or fireplace, vs a magical person being a roaring, open flame. So they’re less intimidating and seem more inviting, or like an equal for the creature that similarly doesn’t really have any powers, just a touch more sense and mind about it.

Mrs Figg breeds part Kneazle cats. So all of her cats would be significantly smarter than normal cats.
@LaPrincipessaNuova Жыл бұрын
This gave me two interesting ideas: First, that there is some sort of magical creature we're not aware of that resembles a normal house cat but actually feeds off of the magical energy of someone and prevents them from using it, meaning they are the reason someone becomes a squib, and at some point they became acquainted with that creature, unaware it was the reason for their being a squib. Second, that because they are a magical person who is unable to make use of that magic, they give off a certain magical aura that gets absorbed by their pets to make them live longer/be more intelligent. Also I just thought of another version: that the unused magical potential comes together to form the animal itself, although I think people would be aware of this one, because they'd probably wonder where the cat came from.

No other animals show up on the map, because no other animals were a threat to them, therefore they had no reason to make them show up on it. Simple and makes perfect sense. #Ravenclaw

I have a different theory: J.K.Rowling included different items and concepts, such as the Marauder's Map or a caretaker with an eerily intelligent cat, because she thought they sounded magical/whimsical/intriguing and fit well into the magical world she envisioned. They were never really made to make perfect logical sense, not by themselves (e.g. why the Marauder's Map works the way it does) nor between different items/concepts (e.g. why Mrs. Norris appears on the map but other animals don't) I also believe some of Rowling's later amendments and Pottermore/Wizarding World articles were her attempt at fixing some plotholes (be they real or perceived) or further explain concepts that had been left more vague in the books. Many of those did a poor job imho, because they were far too rational, at least compared to how the books were written. Many ideas in the book weren't that logical at a closer look, but they felt right. The magic world in the books was charming exactly because it was not as dreary and rational as the Muggle world. All of this charm vanishes when you later add how Muggle plumbing was a late installment in Hogwarts (which conveniently glosses over how the pipes are connected to the Chamber of Secrets without anyone noticing the giant effing snake) and that until this point the students just did their business wherever (dude, why not use chamberpots then... or outhouses).
@megsharp58113 жыл бұрын
Magic chamber pots! When someone was finished it vanishes for you, unless the teachers are teaching vanishing spells to every student upon arrival you’re gonna have some accidents, not to mention anyone having trouble learning said spell is going to be a mess until they get it down, it’d be like potty training 11 year olds all over again, Hogwarts is a castle for crying out loud why wouldn’t they have similar options to a muggle castle? Even before the book I’d say it was pretty obvious that ‘Everyone Poops’ and when brilliant magic users build a castle that runs on slave labor for cleaning etc that they’d have thought about where people were gonna do their business when they’re at the top of a massive tower and the stair cases move.

Theory on Marauders Map: 1. They used a very powerful Homonculous charm that reveals human souls (not just human beings) no matter the form they take (includes any transformations and the ghosts- explains why none of the house elves are on it, also I suspect Firenze wouldn’t have been on it, and if this is true once the Dementors kissed Barty Crouch Jr he no longer would’ve shown up on the map). It’s constantly updating while active, like a satellite showing heat signatures only it literally identifies people by their personal identities. (Sorry I don’t think they synced with the book/quill because I feel like once someone accepts education to wherever they choose to their name drops off the list. Why would a potential acceptance list for Hogwarts keep all that data stored indefinitely? Like once the letter is sent and the student shows up there’s no longer need for the ledger, if anything the most it would keep is the graduates in my opinion.) 2. Other magic was used to draw out the castle and grounds and it constantly updates to address moving staircases, new construction, plant growth, and Peeves because he is magically part of the magical structure of Hogwarts. Essentially if there was a place to stand, or an obstacle in the way when the Marauders made the map it was included, along with any spells needed to interact with the structure of Hogwarts, the only exceptions being the Chamber of Secrets because it was never encountered by the Marauders, and the room of requirement because it is ever changing and therefore basically a void space. 3. The Marauders have admin access to the map- so when one of them swears they’re “up to no good” it either recognizes them specifically (voice recognition) or possibly their wands specifically. So, when Snape sees Lupin going into the Womping Willow secret passage on the map, it’s because Lupin didn’t “log out of admin privileges”. Esp since the map doesn’t effect your eyes, like the twins say when explaining to Harry to always wipe it when you’re finished “otherwise anyone can read it”. As for Mrs Norris: I do believe that Mrs Norris was a witch, and that at some point she attended Hogwarts, and that something magical transformed her into a cat permanently, and that she retained her mind and human soul. My personal theory about how her and Filch interact is that she was an amazingly accomplished legilimens and that she retained the ability as a cat. With her bond to Filch being so strong, and his full trust in her plus absolutely no defense she essentially has a telepathic connection directly with him. A skilled Occlumens could block her reading their mind, but honestly who’s going to think to defend against a cat? It explains their uncanny communication, and why Filch tends to know things a bit too specifically. Also, because of this ability she can sense thoughts in close proximity, similar to an empath sensing emotions. So when she approaches someone in an invisibility cloak because she’s also got heightened cat hunting senses and heard a rustle, she doesn’t see through the cloak but she hears the whispers of thought near her, she concentrates and hears student thoughts but can’t see them, not long after they hear Filch nearby searching with her for who the thoughts are coming from. And to tie up the final loose end- Mrs Norris has fully embraced her name, possibly because she’s forgotten her previous human name, or because Filch named her before she trusted him enough to reveal that she was more than a cat, and like so many cats when she fully trusted and accepted Filch, adopting him as her pet, she also accepted the cute name he had picked for her. Either way it’s how she identifies herself now, so that’s how the map sees her. It shows the truth, and that is truly her name now. I would even go so far as to point out the whole senior/junior thing with the Barty Crouches- when Barty Crouch introduces himself, or the way they identity when having an internal conversation, does he add Senior or Junior to his name, no, the father might introduce his son as Junior but without the other in the conversation there’s no need. So I think the names are displayed by how the person identifies themself not how any kind of ledger or census would write their name, otherwise why only first and last names, why no middle name or initials? Cuz Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore would be an extra long name tag lol

Is Filch his first, or last name? Could it be possible Mrs. Norris is/was Filch’s wife? It would certainly explain the strong connection.
@megsharp58113 жыл бұрын
@@sheriburke8276 his full name is Argus Filch. It's been established that Mrs Norris is not part Kneazle, and even if she isn't a Maledictus we've got a lot of other possible reasons for someone to be somehow transformed into an animal and possibly be stuck that way. Now that it's back in my mind, I'm not certain there's proof that Mrs. Norris isn't an Animagus. If Peter Petigrew could disguise himself as a rat for over 10 years without getting caught who knows? Oh new idea!: Mrs Norris was a witch, who had a cat named Argus, somehow she swapped species and so her cat turned (non-magical)human and she turned cat! Maybe because she was trying to read her cat's mind? So now they can read each other's minds (so ya know, the spell sort of worked?) But the unexpected side effect was they swapped species and either they know they'll get in way too much trouble to try and get someone else to undo the spell, it's unbreakable, or the swap requires the human side to be able to perform the spell the reverse it and Filch is unable to. Or MAYBE the swap was intentional! Maybe Mrs Norris was like "Goodness cats have a great life, they get fed, and petted, and get to nap all day, and they're cute and agile little ninjas, gosh I wish I were a cat." I mean what cat owner hasn't thought about switching places with their furry overlord? ;)

(the one they link to in this video) and when J goes over what Dumbledore says at the feast, and he says "... I'm told for the 400+ time, that magic isn't allowed in the corridors...." WHAT IF THAT'S PROOF THAT FILCH IS THE OTHER HALF OF PEEVES AND ALSO A POLTERGEIST!? What if Filch only asks the headmaster to make that announcement once a year, or even if it's every school semester/ quarter, he'd be 100+years old which he does not look like. Not to mention his comment about detention, and hanging students in the dungeons, and how he "missed the screams" (I think that was only in the movies, in the books though he says ge keeps the shackles well oiled in his office in case he's ever given permission to use them again), but anyways what if that's further proof because I feel like that kind of discipline probably hasn't been around for quite some time, so if he can remember the screams, if he was around then, then maybe he doesn't age. Maybe he's been there so long he doesn't remember that he's a poltergeist, hence the ordering or borrowing the thing for squibs because that's the only explanation as to why he's there but can't do any magic.

My theory, the marauders made the map specifically to avoid those who could rat them out. So animals, and other things that can't report them don't show up. Meaning that Mrs Norris is some type of magic cat that can forward information to Filch

I hate to break Seamus's theory about the Marauders showing up on the map, but Snape says that he sees Lupin on the map in PoA. I loved the theory as much as you did, but then I read that and... yeah.

I think the even easier explanation is that the twins never take a serious look at the bedrooms in gryffindor tower when using the map, because they definitely had something better to do, when they used it, as they would probably look at their direct environment, to look out for any people which might caught them doing mischief.
@rac20903 жыл бұрын
Yea I said the same thing before reading your comment. I think a better explanation for why Fred and George do not see Peter sleeping in the same bed as Ron is as simple as the names being too crammed on the map to distinguish from each other when in the common room. The castle + grounds is huge and the map, although relatively big is still a piece of parchment and the common room and the dorms would be even tinier on the map (imagine like 1/100th the area of the whole castle + its grounds and therefore of the piece of parchment too). With around 60 students in one house (a very conservative number), being in the same general vicinity after classes or at bed time, it must be difficult to distinguish each and every name on the map. It doesn't help that the map writes the full names of everyone either. Also, there is no mention that you can zoom in on any location on the map either. I don't know why people come up with such extensive theories when there is a simple explanation which makes more sense.

The marauders literally made the map so it would help them to get way with stuff, therefore Mrs. Norris is exactly the kind of person (?) who they would have made sure appeared in it.

Alternate theory: the author is inconsistent
@luskaneseprince3 жыл бұрын
The reason why this channel exists is because it tries to explain even the most apparent inconsistencies from within the canon. That's the literal point of this all - to make it entertaining as a storyline, not as a piece of someone's work. Every paragraph in the Harry Potter series can be broken down to "the author just wanted a plot, a character, was tired, didn't care, didn't pay attention, thought it was convenient, was obsessed with this and that". But what's fun about that, as it can be said about every piece of work that has ever been created?

I like the comparison of the Marauder's Map to an Excel spreadsheet. That actually solves the Mrs. Norris and Filch issues by the Marauder's pre-programming their names into the map. Less fun, but Occam's Razor...
@Joe___R3 жыл бұрын
Mrs. Norris is a regular cat that has been affected by a spell or potion that has extended her life greatly & is well trained as a hall monitor. Since she was around when the marauder's map was made so they put Mrs. Norris in it so they didn't get caught.

Maybe the marauders just added a separate thing for mrs norris while they were there to track her specifically
@riluna36953 жыл бұрын
Definitely an easy solution. If they were able to remove themselves from the Map, I can imagine them being able to add Filch and Mrs. Norris specifically. It doesn't immediately disprove the theory, but it unfortunately does weaken it a bit, since the logic banks on the impossibility of them showing up on it to begin with. Honestly, I can think of several reasonable explanations for how the map works that avoid this problem completely, including one with direct evidence from Pottermore. (I can explain if anyone asks me to, but I'm already getting ranty and I wanna quit while I'm ahead)
@krissmith8003 жыл бұрын
Possibly. I mean the Mauraders would want to know where Filch and Mrs. Norris is so they could be up to no good without the worry of being caught. That said, she still seems to be more than just an average cat.
@megsharp58113 жыл бұрын
Someone else has mentioned that the timeframe wouldn’t work because Mrs Norris shouldn’t have been there when the Marauders attended school in the 70’s, and if somehow she was there then it points to her being definitely magical because typical cats don’t live well past 20 years
@ryanchoong47143 жыл бұрын
On the whole Peter Pettigrew conundrum: I use to believe Seamus theory that Marauders only only show up to each other until I reread Prisoner of Azkaban last year and realised that Snape saw Lupin on the map at the end of the story when he brought Wolfsbane potion to him, so wouldn't that mean that others could also see the Marauders on the map? (Unless I'm completely misremembering things)
@iRazenrak3 жыл бұрын
The Marauders can hide themselves, but they have to cast a spell and maintain that spell. Lupin probably forgot to. Or he never did in the first place. Peter likely had the spell going the entire time and only wasn't using it because he was too busy running away from Crookshanks and Sirius.

For people who have been permanently transformed into animals (be it Nagini or Mrs. Norris) I think it’s a bit like Eustace in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Narnia not Harry Potter but bear with me). That is, although their human mind remains intact, their instincts and whims are those of the animal they’ve been cursed into. So although they might be aware, say, eating mice is gross and eating people is wrong, they’re animal instincts crave the nutrition that their animal bodies would normally eat. So like, Mrs. Norris instinctively acting like a cat but reasoning like a human leads to things like slinking around getting students in trouble (cat instincts and human logic on same page) while also getting distracted by all the owls flying around (cat instincts and human reasoning in conflict)
@squidsquiddly59703 жыл бұрын
Filch likely accidentally turned his wife/girlfriend at the time into a cat. He was not talented enough to tur her back...The reason "'He had a boggart in his file cabinet." Boggarts will drain a wizard of his powers over time if not eradicated from the premises. So as Filch tried and tried and tried to "Fix" Mrs.Norris he eventually gave up and resorted to self help books never knowing the REAL REASON he was "squibbed" so to speak. She remained devoted and they kept being the odd couple of buddies they always were for as like Nagini she likely could NEVER turn back over time...the longer she was a cat the more like a cat she was. That is my guess. Now I will watch the video and see what they think.
