The end result was that Ulster became anglicized, protestant, and loyal to the crown as opposed to the rest of Ireland which was gaelic, catholic, and anti unionist. This caused a major demographic divide in Ireland that in 1920, after the Irish War of Independence and the Troubles, resulted into Ireland being partitioned into two separate entities. The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and believe it or not the history gets even messier but this comment is getting long enough as is. To wrap it up the Good Friday agreement created peace between the nations, an open border was formed, and left room for Northern Ireland to rejoin Ireland whenever they please... And then Brexit happened and things got messy AGAIN...
