@@ellis9270 Learning about recent history (ie, past 200 years) is pretty important for a couple reasons- mostly for politics, imo. It's important that we don't blindly repeat past mistakes and have more critical analysis of our current events. However, learning about Shakespeare seems useless as fuck. It has some good points but god, no-one cares enough to learn anything useful from it. And the whole language analysis thing? Waste of my fucking time, just make reading books regularly compulsary and everyone would be 10x more educated. English is my least favourite subject for a reason. I just like history.

@Tayib-u7w Жыл бұрын
Key takeaways: Time Management: The video suggests allocating a maximum of 24 minutes to write the answer, as it involves reading and comparing both texts. This may require borrowing reading time from other questions. Explanations: The most important factor in scoring marks is the number of explanations provided. The video advises using phrases like "this implies" or "this suggests" to introduce explanations linked to quotes or references from the texts. References/Quotes: While quotes are important, the number of references does not directly correlate with marks. It is more important to focus on providing explanations linked to quotes or references. Methods: The examiners are not overly concerned with the number of methods mentioned. While it is recommended to identify methods such as simile, metaphor, contrast, vocabulary choices, and alliteration, any technique or approach used by the writer can be considered a method. Comparisons: It is not necessary to keep switching back and forth between the two texts for each comparison. Instead, the video suggests dedicating half the time to writing about one source and the other half to writing about the other source. Comparisons will naturally arise due to the different viewpoints presented in the texts. Paragraph Structure: The video suggests using the PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Language Analysis) paragraph structure. While using PEEL paragraphs can be effective up to grade seven, top candidates at grade eight and nine may focus on finding more quotes to provide explanations rather than spending time on extensive PEEL paragraphs. Vocabulary Variation: Using varied vocabulary to introduce each explanation can enhance fluency, it is not necessary for earning marks. Using a consistent phrase like "this implies" throughout the response is sufficient. Word Count: The number of explanations provided is more critical than the number of paragraphs or comparisons. Students should aim to write as many explanations as possible within the given time. The video highlights that most students do not go beyond 14 marks, and the examiners set a high standard for achieving higher scores.

I'm feeling quite confident about my English literature exams (rare) and that is all thanks to you! I wouldn't say my language paper 1 went well and I'm feeling quite anxious about that but I am hoping to save my grades with language paper 2. Your videos are a great help and just by watching them I feel more confident and prepared. I just wanted to say thank you so much for helping me and over 100k other students with their English literature and language GCSEs. We are truly so grateful to you sir, please continue to be the amazing teacher you are! If anyone thinks they might need this: 25 Language Devices: Defined & Explained! 1. Pathetic Fallacy Is when the weather or the atmosphere describes the mood. For example, when the weather is rainy people are sad and depressed 2nd example, the dark night could symbolise something supernatural like 3AM Satan etc… 2. Personification Is when a non-human is given human qualities. For example, the tree is waving to John as drives away. 3. Simile When you are comparing two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’ For example, his facial vision looked like a falcon’s eye 4. Metaphor Is when you are comparing two things with is or are Example He is an orc 5. Extended Metaphor Pick a metaphor and explain how --- > turn in to an extended metaphor Metaphor --- > Life is a rollercoaster. Now turning into extended metaphor add explanation so, Life is a rollercoaster you don’t know when you will be at the top or at the bottom, it will all happen in an instance, at the greatest heights you will be at the greatest heights and at times it will crash, but every day is never the same, just like in a turn in a Rolle coaster is never the same. 6. Oxymoron 2 opposite words side-by-side Example, the small giant 7. Juxtaposition You explain an oxymoron. The small giant tip-toing trying to reach the top shelf, however, his small arms and puny fingers prevented him from grabbing the bar of jam. 8. Symbolism Is when objects represent a meaning. For example, moon and the star represent Islam. 2nd Example, if you get a priest you will think someone died. In Macbeth the dagger links to death. 9. Semantic field Is where words are linked to an idea. For example, PPE, 2m and Hand Sanitiser, Head of Year link to COVID. 10. Irony Is when events in the text surprises the characters. Something not expected! Mr Birling offering a 1000. Scrooge changing his nature. 11. Rhetorical Question Question does not require an answer 12. Hyperbole Is when you hype, when over-exaggerating. I am going to eat the whole restaurant. 13. Assonance Is the repetition of the vowel sound. I am too cool for school. Oooooo 14. Alliteration Words in a row begin with the same letter. 15. Sibilance Is when words in a row have the s letter or the s sound Example: the snake was slowly hissing 16. Euphemism Is when you say something in an indirect manner. He is not with us anymore. 17. Emotive Language Is when the writer makes the reader feel emotional. By making them angry. 18. Onomatopoeia Words describe the sound Boom bang skirr pop 19. Ruel of 3 / Power of 3 / Triplets Words or phrases in a row describe something (3) The table is black, hard and wide 20. Facts/ Stats Uses evidence to support their facts. 50 % of the students prefer using email rather than social media . 21. Plosive Reptation of harsh sound Words such as 'P' 'D' 'B' 22. Zoomorphism Is when you give a person animal features. Example John barked at me / John shouted at me. 23. Opinion 24. Repetition Language Device and Structure. Is when the writer uses the words repletely to create an effect. Where is being repeated and why is that important 25. Noun, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs Structure Flashback - when you go back in time ,3 days ago etc.. Foreshadowing - when the writer gives clue about future ‘my heart was beating fast’ Zoom in - focus on one thing for example ‘pen’ , ‘specific character ‘ Zoom out - normally used to talk about setting Dialogue - when the character speak ‘hey there !’ New character New setting Change in tone Short sentence - to build up tense Long sentence - add details and slow down the narrative Short /long sentence - may show importance in both Shift in focus - talks about object then talks about another object for example ‘pen’ to ‘table’ Cyclical structure - similar stuff happening with beginning and ending Juxtaposition Extended metaphor Pace List Pov Overall tone Chronogical order Climax Repetition Links Mood , pathetic fallacy

That's the problem with doing lots of explanations. To get into the top band, you either must be "perceptive" or "detailed". Perceptive is when you think of something unique, creative or hard to understand, and will get you 7 or 8 marks. Or you can get "detailed" marks, which are a lot easier in my opinion. This is when you expand on one idea, and go into detail on an explanation, and will also get you 7 or 8. Having lots of simple explanations or non detailed explanations doesn't get you the marks.

Because Mr EE is actually correct. Mr Salles appears to think that you get 1 mark/explanation, which is not how English works at all. It's marked holistically, so if you say something that is perceptive or detailed, you will immediately get into Band 4, which is 12-16 marks I believe. Even if that's only 4-5 explanations. After that, if you continue talking about something and it's only band 3/2, you'll still get 12-16 marks. There is no 1 mark = 1 explanation type thing, it's marked on whether you say something perceptive or detailed.

If you are jumping from source, a to source B and back again, then you do have to compare similar things. @blob6371 Correct. Although some questions refer to different parts of the extract, so you can't always reuse things. Maybe for Q4 you could; unless I'm mistaken, Q4 refers to the entire extracts.

So, when the marking scheme says "judicious range of quotes" does it mean a lot of quotes or quotes with a lot of techniques?
@tomhassan7501

It means choosing the best quote for your explanation
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish
@MrSallesTeachesEnglish Жыл бұрын
Exactly - even the examiners will disagree. Marking criteria is subjective. So it means both and also the best quotes to fit your argument

@pump4715
@pump4715 Жыл бұрын
yes, but i feel he doesnt reccomend it since the top grades do not require a specific structure, and it is difficult to write alot of explanations whilst being constricted to a specific way of writing. it would be much better to just write freely as many explanations as possible ignoring the vocabulary and structure of ur writing.
