Actually, as far as concepts go they have meetings all together with the creative team (lumpens), they all share their concepts and Ideas, discuss kind of a rough draft/idea of what they want based on the concepts that they all come up with and then they leave the rest up to lumpens. The members don't get to see the final project until a few hours before release and it makes for some amazing reactions. Also, when shooting/on set, members tend to give ideas about certain shots or things they would like to include in the mvs, one simple example is the drawings you saw in the background (the members drew those themselves). It's a partnership in the true sense of the word. If you are interested in understanding the mv you should react to the DKDKTV explained video for it.

they do actually get together to share their ideas and concepts to discuss what kinda way they want to go and what the theme is supposed to be for their comebacks (see the inspiration they took from Carl Jung's Map of the Soul which you'll find in every video and is overly present in their latest albums and many songs) So they do lay the groundwork together, the final details are worked out by Lumpens

i love this series of bts mv reactions! IDOL is the trippiest mv ever lmao this song and mv are a mixture of african and asian cultures, dances and sounds. this song was played a lot in night clubs, ads and tv shows. it talks about loving themselves, haters paying attention to them 24/7, people at the airport not giving them space, media, things they love and more. it's such an anthem, and an hymn of self-love can't wait for other music videos like Mic Drop, Blood Sweat & Tears, Make it Right ft Lauv, Not Today, Fire, Save Me etc. if you want behind the scenes of this mv kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnLHp6JmoLStbqM fake love mv behind the scenes kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKTSfqiXmtyjkNU

You can just watch out what songs they have on the explain series then return to watch it whenever you react to the song on that list.

This video can be interpreted as a clapback for everyone who was running their mouth back then on them being kpop artists doing great in the West. People used many stereotypes about Korean/Asian people as something despective, like "there are too many people in the groups", "you can't understand what they are saying", "they all look the same", "too many colors and stuff on the videos make me dizzy", "it's all too fake", while the k-pop community was calling them "westernized". Yet, they came back with IDOL, in which they reference Korean culture a lot, showing that they are still unapologetically Korean and will remain so, also referencing all those mean comments directed at them (and kpop as a genre) and overdoing them with CGI, like the titan versions of themselves, the shark, the multiplied member's heads in one of the shots, the SNOW app filters, the explosion of colors EVERYWHERE- The rabbit in the moon is a reference to a mythical figure who lives on the moon in Far Eastern folklore. In East Asian folklore, the rabbit is seen as pounding with a mortar and pestle, but the contents of the mortar differ among Chinese, Japanese and Korean folklore. In the Korean version, the rabbit is pounding the ingredients for rice cakes. The word you liked in the chorus is "ursoo!" which expresses a happy, joyous feeling and it's from Korean traditional performance _Pansori_. You could compare it to "Oh yeah!~" in English. Some notes: -One of the dance moves is an African dance called gwara gwara, the prints of their suits are also African -There is a Nicki Minaj remix of IDOL with a music video, some of the shots are different so that MV is not entirely the same
@shane84084 жыл бұрын
I was one of the people who purposely ignored BTS when they got famous in the West (been a kpop fan for more than 10 years) because I was a fan of another group. THEN they released Idol and I was so impressed bec a lot of artists would try to embed more Western aspects in their music and overall package so they could be more acknowledged, but no, not for BTS. They literally shouted out "I'm proud of it. I know what I am, I'm never gonna change, I'm never gonna trade." And bombarded them with the very things in Asian culture that they were criticizing. Talk about bad ass. This is why I love them so much. They are not afraid to be themselves. They love to make music and inspire people and they do just that. Now that they are at the top, they still keep on doing that, despite hardships and doubts. They remained true to who they wanted to be when they first started.

DKDKTV channel has a good “explained by a korean” series that breaks down many of BTS videos, including this one and it would be worthwhile watching them, it explains many of the things that you pointed out. Of the drawn characters that you picked out, SUGA’s is actually his BT21 character. BTS collaborated with Line Friends to create BT21, each member created their character. Anyway you should really check out the explained for IDOL Edit: oh and the members pronounce SUGA like “shoo-ga”

BTS received a lot of critics of “being to westernized” by some koreans and kpoppers mostly (specially by the term *idol* >singers/rappers on the kpop industry are called like that< wich btw this term carries a lot of prejudice cause korea seems idols as not real artists) and received critics by western media of them “being too colorful”, “too weird” and many other things. so idol is an MV in wich BTS addresses all these critics saying that they are proud of being idols, artists and koreans.

Trust me, you've only seen the tiniest tip of the BTS iceberg. If you keep digging you will find out that all of their videos have such deep meaning and many are connected with their fictional BTS Universe. It's actually mind-blowingly brilliant! You could probably make BTS video reaction videos for months with just the content that is already out there, (you've got to watch their dance practice videos!) but they keep adding more and more content almost daily. I would also recommend you watch RM's United Nations speach. Their messages through song are amazing, even for 50-something women like me. Your reactions are so fun to watch. Keep it up!
@Diana-fy8uo4 жыл бұрын
Lumpens and GDW are the two Korean film production companies that have worked with Big Hit since BTS's debut. GDW's production highlights wide-angle cinematic frames, action shots and showcases choreography well (i.e. Save Me, Not Today, Dope, Boy With Love and more) while Lumpens highlights harmony of colours and patterns, unique frame transitions, and just overall attention to fine details (Idol, DNA, Fake Love, Serendipity, Blood Sweat Tears, and more). Both companies do a really good job of translating BTS's lyrics and message into visual form for the audience to better interpret. Nothing in BTS's videos is random. It's one symbolism after the other, so you should definitely check out explanation videos from DKDKTV, XCeleste or others. As a side note, Bang Producer (Big Hit's CEO) has really stayed true to his goal of creating an environment where all artists are valued for their skill and hard work rather than being treated as music-making factory slaves.

Idol is a very complex song. It looks like a game but it has many Korean symbols behind it. The song is a criticism of haters. You can criticize their videos, their music and their culture But they will continue making music and they will continue loving their country and their culture. You can call them Idols, the truth is that they don't care hahaha I love the lyrics, when I first heard it look for every word and every meaning. hey this is a little late in coming, but this song has a TON of references to traditional korean culture as im sure other comments have pointed out. one thing i didn't see was a mention about the rabbit on the moon! in lots of east asian cultures theres a traditional folklore about a mythical rabbit that lives on the moon which is why we saw it in the video as well. the more you know! (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_rabbit)
@ablindinglightthatnolonger83794 жыл бұрын
those massive colourful things dancing at the end of the video are Korean lions. They are costumes used for an auspicious dance for bringing good luck at events and ceremonies, especially the Chinese new year. In this video, apart from the thousands of colours and trippy patterns (which by the way some of them are references to episodes of their lives and other music videos), you'll also notice a lot of references to Asian culture symbols and history. The Middle-Eastern-inspired building (where they're dressed with those safari outfits), a citation to John Woo (Chinese director known mainly for the movies Mission Impossible II and Face-Off) and Running Man (a Korean variety show), Nongak (I'm not sure if that's the correct name) which is a folk dance, where you see them in a circle, spinning while jumping diagonally and so on. Also in the dance routine, there are some inspirations taken from African folk culture and in my opinion, those Korean lions themselves are very similar, both physically and conceptually to Wolof and Mandinka hunters' masquerades. It's a celebratory song, with a very adequate music video, where they say that they're embracing themselves as artists, idols, human beings (with qualities and flaws) and Korean natives. Ultimately by saying that they know who they are, they are telling their haters to stop judging them, mind their own business and go f*ck themselves. If you're interested in this type of music videos, I think that another good one could be J-hope's (the only one with dark brown hair in the video) single "Daydream", from his solo mixtape. I love that song and the music video is really trippy as well.

BTS together with their CEO and Artistic Directors plan their album concepts years in advance. Really. Their label was started with a vision in mind that's expressed in the logo: "Music and Artists for Healing". They all work together as a team to come up with what we see. Bighit was just named "World's most Innovative Company" in part for the meticulous planning and execution of their vision. I don't want to get into a solo fan battle, and I am not a solo fan, but I suspect a lot of the core theme ideas start with RM and Bang Si-hyuk, the CEO. Even Ed Sheeran and Troye Sivan wrote songs for them! It seems unbelievable how much American media ignore and underappreciate them!

This entire music video is a representation of Korean culture, including the clothes they wore and the sets. Please react to Blood Sweat and Tears.

the rabbit in the moon is an allusion to a chinese/korean folklore which you can search up on if you want to because it's difficult to go into detail lol. i know this only because i'm chinese, but i never knew that the koreans had their own version of the story too until i watched IDOL came out. and those massive dancing things are from korean lion dance, similar to what i have in my chinese culture too. i guess it's pretty cool to include so many korean references and instruments in this song because it's basically a celebration of who they are, as koreans and artists.

Those drawings have deep meaning and were drawn by the members. Please react to the DKDKTV channel explanation of IDOL by a Korean and you'll find out a lot including the meaning of the rabbit in the moon and you'll find out what the hell those things in the background are!

the whole visual arts mean the diversity of self! the lyrics says "there's tens and hundreds of me inside me", " "you can call me whatever." the colorfulness and crazy graphics show how diverse one's self is. one can't be defined as a single word. there are so many different sides in you. so you have to accept the fact that it's all you(even the dark side), also should not simply judge other people as well by looking one side. IDOL is basically a song of self-love & diversity of self.

The sound effects in the lyrics come from korean traditional sound/music Idol is a great mix of many culture sounds/tradition(korean, African etc) mythology(the bunny on the moon) celebrating them all it's a beautiful song
