NBA Legends Explain Why It’s So Hard To Guard Nikola Jokic
Have you ever looked at Jokic and thought, "How on earth is Jokic so unstoppable?" I mean, seriously! He doesn't fit the typical mold of a dominant NBA player. Yet, he's out there, making his mark and breaking records.
I mean, come on, even the most knowledgeable folks around the league never saw this coming. But here he is, Nikola Jokic, leading the Denver Nuggets to their first-ever NBA title.
Believe it or not, there are heated debates about whether he's already one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. But why is it so hard to guard Jokic? What makes him such a nightmare for defenders?

I've seen a big man exactly like Jokic. His name was Arvydas Sabonis and he played for the Portland Trailblazers. But don't take my word for it. Here is what Clyde "The Glide" Drexler had to say about Arvydas: In Clyde Drexler's view, if Sabonis had been able to spend his prime in Portland, next to the plethora of other Trail Blazers' All Stars (Drexler, Terry Porter, Buck Williams, Steve Johnson, Kevin Duckworth, and Clifford Robinson), the Trail Blazers would "have had four, five or six titles. Guaranteed. He was that good. He could pass, shoot three pointers, had a great post game, and dominated the paint."Despite his height and weight, he was "a magician in the post who played the game with a style I’ve never seen from a big man. He was a point guard in a center's body. And just to be fair to Arvydas, he was better than most point guards are at distributing the ball". Age and injuries took its toll on Arvydas before his time with Portland, but I recognized his skills when I saw him play.

As much as I admire Kobe's toughness and heart, he simply could not exist in today's nba. What the warriors did was eliminate iso-ball and its superstars. They said we'll make dudes like Kobe uncool simply by turning them to losers. When every player on the court is a more efficient shooter than Kobe, I just don't get your comment. The nba became so much more beautiful and pleasing to watch to counter Kobe's selfish brutality-- again, admittedly, it had its own kind of beauty, but it was also soundly defeated time after time by team ball movement and enhanced shooting capabilities.

@@johnsuplicki I 100% agree with you about Kobe. He was a very selfish player that did not make other players better at all. He was supposed to be a 'scoring machine' but yet, literally never had a single season, in all of those seasons, shooting over 50% and had a career sub 45% fg% He was lucky he played when he did, with the team he played on, and with all of those great players he played with. Those first 3 championships they had -really 2 as the Kings were robbed obviously - he wasn't even close to being the best player on the team

He is big, strong, a very descent shooter and ball handler for his size. A very high basketball IQ, he can read the court with his great vision. But the most important assess he has, is his spirit, unlike most of the league's superstars, he is a real team player who puts his team before himself, and he wants for his teammates to reach their potential and even exceed it! Anyone arguing his greatness doesn't know what this game is all about! As a Laker fan, it was a consolation for me losing to a great player.

Been watching BB since 1988, local Philippine bb, and moved to the US in 93, where instantly became a Jordan Bulls fan, became Nets fan in 2000 when the J Kidd era began. At this point my understand of bb has become more clearer, its a team game and as much as I was a Jordan fan I love watching a well balanced team game over a cerebral scorer centric team. For 35 years, Jokic is the a player in a very long time that passes the eye test in imposing his will in the game regardless if he does the intangibles or if he does need to score. He is reminiscent of the Jason Kidd era. I am now a believer and a fan of Jokic. -- Why not Lebron you say? There is too much politics with Lebron. Instead of giving Lebron the correct respect, he is given too much that to me he is oversold the media. Everything comes naturally to Jokic. There are times I see Lebron is stat padding. This is also the main reason why I'm not a huge fan of Russell Westbrook.

His body control is second to none, really in all aspects of the game. It's really surprising to watch him dribble. For a big man like himself, he's so smooth with the ball. He can get a shot off in basically every way it's possible to do so. Great footwork. Excellent shot from any range. Great vision. ETA: I kinda liken him to CP3. When you look at Chris Paul, it doesn't seem like he'd dominate the position. But, like with Jokic, he just has supreme body control and vision. Nikola seems to be "playing outside of time". He is constantly in phase with the journey of the ball into the basket. When the path he sees becomes too uncertain, he shifts to the next path his 'soft eyes' whisper to him. Urgency is not the driver of his play, the patient conversation with forming, breaking-down, and reforming pathways to the basket drive his play, through whatever teammate or opponent the ball 'wants to go.'

Jokic has a total control of the ball with touch skills. Like Joe Montana. It does not have to be a 50 yard bomb like Mahomes, but he touches it for a second, and directs it to an open man streaking to the hoop. I.q. helps, but getting teammates to buy in is crucial.

Imo, what makes him unstoppable is his "constantly improving" IQ and footwork (+ his resistance, he never gets tired of running out there). Look how he never doubts any play when he's near the rim, he trusts his physics and hard work. When he passes he does "those little movements" with his hand and wrist. He uses the game's logic on his favor 'cause he never thinks of himself as someone who is already on the g.o.a.t. debate (he doesn't even care about it). These forgotten by almost everyone pretty obvious things are the keys to Jokic's success.

To be really honest I always thought Jokic was overrated, but I reckon I was wrong. His no explosive gameplay makes you think that he is not quite there yet but in reality his game and maybe also Doncic game is telling us that you don't need of be super athletic to dominate the game. First of all the man can hit forty foot shots on a routine basis. Second he is big and strong and has great footwork with the best court vision since Magic. His passing Is second to none. His D is good too.

A very reasonable case can be made for Nikola Jokic being the best offensive weapon in league history. He has no weaknesses at all in the half court. Matter of fact, he's elite in every category. There've been better shooters, passers, playmakers post players than Jokic. But no one in league history is anywhere close to his level when it comes to: soft touch, quality decision-making and fast decision-making.

I remember when Denver traded away Nurcic, and a debate was ignited over whether Denver kept the right guy. Funny. No matter the subject, there are always contrarians. Lost in the noise: Joker is durable, too. A lot of tall guys turn out to be brittle.

Man, I know he is good. But I know he is humble because he understands that NBA is not a one-man team! His tremendous talents comes from the trust of his companions that gives him confidence to execute those amazing moves. Though, his unpredictable moves are so lowkey that it shook pros off guard! He is just amazing and humble. Huge respect to him as well as his whole team who supported and trusted his process. Good work Denvers!
