There's no doubt he cheated when he brushed back the sand but he claims he did not feel it. The thing is he broke a rule and was penalized just like holding in the NFL and they never call an offensive lineman a cheater. That said, all the other stuff Reed has been accused of is and will be considered LIABLE in the courts. Reed was deemed to have broken no rule with the embedded ball. Hell, Rory did the exact same thing after that. I play golf and a ball can land in wet rough, bounce up and leave a ball mark which the ball can fall back in. It happens. Reed was also not breaking rules with the palm tree incident. That's the fact. And about these guys bad mouthing Reed, some work for the networks and some use to be on the PGA and now they are not so they can say what they want while not playing for the PGA. There are a lot of errors in the commentating making PR look worse including the mispronouncing of Xander’s name. He does not have to check with an official or another player to see if his ball is embedded. If you watched the actual telecast there was no way PR could have seen the ball bounce, in spite of its ending up embedded. The movement of the sand, however, looks very bad.
@russcontact2 жыл бұрын
@@lylealexander4861 Yes I know, I was a competitive golfer when I was younger. With the imbedded situation you can tell he’s worried about the camera by where he’s standing. You wouldn’t assess a lie from uphill, at least not the first glance, yet he stands exactly between the ball and the camera and then kneels so his leg blocks the ball. It’s intentional, trust me. And yes the sand is horrible. Any good golfer would certainly feel that contact, and Reed has elite level short game touch. He’s just a cheater and that’s unacceptable in golf.
@lylealexander48612 жыл бұрын
@@russcontact You say, “It’s intentional. Trust me,” as though it’s a fact. In reality, it’s an opinion. Of course, it could be true. What bothered me about the negative comments from Pepper, Faldo and Baker-Finch, was that they were aired immediately after the PGA Tour official verified that the procedure that PR followed was precisely within the rules. As a person rules certified by the R&A and Golf Canada, I agree that the ruling was correct, based on the information known at that time. But I’m also a competitive player as well and would have called another player over to scrutinize my checking to see if the ball was embedded, even though I didn’t have to. Ironically, Rory was involved in the exact same scenario later, where the ball bounced before coming to rest, and he too claimed the ball was embedded and took relief. And no one batted an eye.
@russcontact2 жыл бұрын
@@lylealexander4861 Yes I agree, technically the ruling was absolutely correct from the officials point of view. But that’s the essence of cheating, isn’t it? I’m not up on what the tv guys said, but if they blamed the official that’s BS. As far as it being my opinion, sure that’s true. But I’ve been around competitive golf enough to understand which body movements are habitual and which are intentional. Its just a natural thing the eye catches now. Of course I can’t officially prove it, but when its the same guy over and over again who’s in the 99+% sure cheating column, at some point those odds are a certainty. Blocking the camera with an weird stance and knee flex, flexing your back muscles as you “grab” the ball, moving quickly and hurrying, and not waiting for another observer, when you’re already known as a cheat?! Cmon now.
@lylealexander48612 жыл бұрын
@@russcontact There is certainly a high probability that PR did or would do something based on his past history and I am in no way defending him. However, as a referee, a ruling must be made based on the facts known at that time, and exactly in accordance with the rules. That was done in this instance. Plus, if it came down to the player’s word versus another player’s or a spectator, the player’s word it always taken, also in accordance with the rules. That’s why video evidence is very helpful. If it’s discovered later that the player deserved a penalty, those strokes are tacked on to his score at the end unless it’s a DQ. My guess is that the negative comments from Faldo/Pepper/Baker-Finch were taped ahead of time and foolishly played AFTER the on air referee confirmed that PR’s actions were within the rules. LIke you, I have many decades of tournament experience, six exactly, included in those about 15 years of refereeing from club championships to LPGA qualifying and I agree with you that very often one can tell if something shady is going on by a player’s body language or tone of voice, however, before saying something, either as a player or a referee, you better be sure you have proof. Lastly, may I suggest that viewers take rulings made by commentators with a grain of salt as they make a huge number of mistakes, causing those listening to believe that what they said was fact. Later in that same tournament PR’s ball moved on the putting green after being marked and replaced and Nobilo said that he had to play it from the new spot. The on air referee corrected Nobilo telling him that once the ball is marked, the player owns that spot and the moved ball must be replaced. Nobilo”s comment was “I didn’t know that.” Just one example but there have been many.
