funny because according to sabermetrics, stealing bases is bad

@@youstinklolgotakeashower not true. Early on that was the thought, but it was more getting caught that was bad. @joemarshall42264 жыл бұрын
@@tazz5406 There's a few things to think about here......It's not just the stolen base, it's the THREAT of the stolen base that has unseen mental value. The pitcher knows that if he walks you, he's giving up a double, and he's going to be pitching out of the stretch with a lot of pressure on him. The fact that Rickey batted out of a crouch made it worse.....the pitcher had to feel the pressure....but if you came in with an easy strike, Rickey could take you down town...he had tremendous power....hitting out of the crouch. The threat of the stolen base allows the following hitter to see more fastballs, but it also means the following batter has to take strikes to allow you to steal.....If you are a great percentage stealer like Ichiro or Joe Morgan, or Davey Lopes, you help your team a lot. Rickey's percentage was not quite as high as theirs, but it was still good.

Factoring the impact he had in every game he played, the impact he had on the history of baseball, and the absolutely ridiculous records he set, I can make a STRONG argument that he is the greatest player ever. A total freak of nature! There truly is nobody to compare him to. I wish I could see Rickey flip the bat, pop the jersey, and do the pimp swag around the bases one last time.
@joemarshall42264 жыл бұрын
@@andrewb8235 Everything you say is true, but there is still an argument for Rickey if you factor in the unseen elements, like putting pressure on pitchers, forcing them to pitch out of the stretch (which brings up the OBP and SP of his teammates0 the excitement he brings to his team......it's all stuff you can't quantify, but a player like Rickey can bring instant offense to a team.....Every time he gets up, you know he can somehow manufacture a run, no matter how well the pitcher is pitching...and you can't walk him, like you can a slugger.....

Bill James had the greatest leadoff hitters of all time as 1) Rickey 2) Tim Raines 3) Paul Molitor. Amazing...they all came up at the same time and had 20 year careers! But I would put another contemporary, Wade Boggs, above two of them, if not all three. He couldn't steal bases as well as the rest, but his OBP was 40 or 50 points higher. The reason he didn't score more runs was because Jim Rice would hit into 35 Ops per year, taking him off the base...or he would force him out at second, and maybe Jim would score the run.....they should have hit and run more often.....Otherr great lead off hitters were Maxie Bishop in the 30s, Eddie Lost and Eddie Joost in the 40s, and Ferris Fain....guys who knew how to get on base

I was a teenager working as a groundskeeper for the AAA Ogden (Utah) A's. Rickey was a few years older than me, but he was the youngest player on the Ogden A's. We were close for the couple of months he was there because we were close in age and I was always there. He was the hardest working player by far. He was the first player to arrive every home game. He had me mix a lot of sand with the red clay in front of 2nd & 3rd base. He would practice his base stealing and slides for at least 30 minutes per day. Then he would work on his defense for another hour or so. He once talked me into letting him drive the ATV which pulled the infield drag rake in-between an inning. I nearly got fired. But Rickey never stopped laughing and the fans loved it. He told me he was a much better football player than a baseball player. I now see why with these highlights. But he said he chose baseball because they had fully guaranteed contracts and the NFL did not.

2 stories about Rickey Henderson in my lifetime. 1)1990-91 in Detroit. Rickey is playing outfield and at every break in the game, he would come over to the fence and talk to the fans. I had eight buddies with me at the Tigers game for my birthday present. One of my buddies, Danny Caputo screams out to Rickey "hey Rickey, can I have one of your batting gloves?" Rickey starts cracking up, reaches back to grab one of his neon green Mizuno gloves, and tosses it to Danny. I asked my buddy if I could have the glove since it was my birthday. He laughed. Fair enough, but I thought it was amazing that Rickey would do that for a bunch of random kids. 2) Rickey is 44 years old and asked to attend an MLB game to bring up crowd attendance. No one is expecting anything but it's cool to see him there. He is the leadoff hitter and CRUSHES a home run over right. Everyone is celebrating and laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes. He did it again dammit!!

Once you learn the head first slide, it's actually easier on your body than the legs-first slide...as long as you can protect your fingers....you absorb the contact with the ground on your quads, not your chest. Funny thing about Pete and Rickey. Both were hometown players. Both had career records that may never be broken (Pete, hits, Rickey stolen bases and runs). both played into their 40s. Each won one MVP, and for a stretch in each career, each was seen as the best player in the game. Both had electricity that fans responded to...they lit up the diamond. Fast forward to a few months ago, while living in Berkeley, I randomly had a dream and Ricky was in it. I woke up smiling and thinking how cool of a dream I had with one of my childhood baseball hero's. Later that morning, still fondly reminiscing about the dream i had just had, I followed my regular routine and went to grab coffee at Peet's on Telegraph. As I walked through the doors and observed the line, I couldn't believe my eyes when I recognized that the man standing at the end of the line, and now directly in front of me , was indeed Ricky Henderson! What are the chances?! Obviously I didn't want to sound like some crazed weirdo and say "hey ricky , wow this is so crazy. I just had a dream about you last night and look , here you are!" Lol, yeah I don't think that would have gone over so well. So instead i remained composed, and simply smiled at Ricky and then respectfully and graciously told him I've always been a huge fan of his and wished him a great day :-) He said thank you and wished me the same, and then we both went about our business. Still makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Ruth took illegal drugs (alcohol during prohibition). Aaron admitted to taking "Greenies" (amphetamines, which were very common in the 70s). Ricky was basically an automatic triple and a run as a lead off hitter. Leads off game. Walks. Steals second. Steals third. Scores

If you attempted to post the all time lineup in baseball, many spots in the order could be up for intense debate, but without question...Rickey would be the undisputed leadoff hitter in any all time lineup.

I'm not old enough to have gotten to watch him play, especially in his prime (I'm 28.), but what a player. Along with being on the all-time A's team, I'd put him on the all-time Yankee team also. Even if he'd have to come off the bench (because of all the great players the Yankees have had), he'd still be an incredible weapon

Is he the DH or is Barry Bonds not playing?

I saw Rickey last week, Oakland's Finest. He could have hit 30 home runs per year, no doubt about it. He had power but that wasn't his objective.

One year with the Yankees, he was slamming the ball....he had 20 mourns by august 1, long shots in Yankee Stadium, before they moved the left field fence in.....but Billy Martin told him that he was more valuable going for singles, because he got in the pitcher's head when he got on base, and helped the ret of the team. I'm not sure Billy was right. The year Rickey hit a lot of homers, his batting average went down a little, but his walks went up, so his OBP was about the same. He broke Bobby Bonds's record for lead off homers. Rickey hit 9, bobby hit 8

Rickey Henderson fue un jugador grande, que tremendo para robar bases y pegar jonrones comenzando el juego, jugador completo, una garantia para anotar muchas carreras, ya es una leyenda para Oakland Athletics.
