The greatest line I ever heard a coach say came from Loyola coach Paul Westhead who was asked about Jeff Freyer's chances of playing in the NBA. The sportscaster said "We know Freyer can shoot, but are his ball skills good enough for the next level?" Westhead replied "We don't know...he's been here for 4 years and hasn't passed the ball yet."

Loved watching Hank and Bo back in the day! Hank left this world way to early! I Met Bo when he played for the Clippers, and he was always gracious to me and my little brother after the games signing autographs.

If Hank Gathers had lived, it's very possible he would have been the other HOF player in this game. Also, the title highlights Chris Jackson, Gathers and Bo but what about Shaq and his triple double, including the 12 blocks? Nothing like early 90's college ball!

Nah, I liked Gathers but his success was largely due to the system he played in rather than him being overtly skilled. He was a very good athlete with a very high motor who was also was pretty fast and very quick. He was the PERFECT PF for Westhead's system but his stats were extremely inflated due to that same system. He had almost no post game who almost never had to play with his back to the basket. He was a below average ball handler and his jumper was unreliable. Most all of his rebounds that he grabbed were uncontested due to the pace that LMU played. Lastly, I cant even gauge how he played defense because of the system he played in. He most likely would have gotten drafted in the 1st round but unless the team played an almost exact style of play as LMU I dont see him being a star or even a rotation player in the NBA. Case in point, Bo Kimble. Kimble looked like an absolute future NBA superstar at LMU. He went to a team that needed a scorer at SG in the Clippers. His LMU numbers just didnt translate to the NBA. He was a slow, slightly unathletic shooting guard who couldnt create his own shot and got lost in a halfcourt offensive set. He couldnt defend nor could he ball handle well. He was a system's player. And that's okay. I still fondly remember both Gathers and Kimble for those fun LMU teams.

Hank Gathers was a grown man! Chris Jackson was the most skilled player in the game. Bo Kimble, Jeff Fryer, Maurice Williamson, Stanley Roberts, Wayne Simms. This game was loaded 🙏🏾🏀🙏🏾 Hank Gathers death both hurt and shocked me. I was at home alone when I heard the news. Couldn’t stay at home alone afterward. Shook kid.

An almost 23 year old Hank Gathers vs an almost 18 year old Shaq. Hank had 48 pts and 13 rebs while Shaq had a triple double with 20 pts, 24 rebs and 12 blocks (!).

I remember this game well. In the second half LMU had a run going and was getting turnovers off its press. LSU was bailed out when the lights went out for several minutes which allowed LSU to regroup.

How many players have dropped 48 on Shaq? Hank is the only one I've seen. Gone too soon it would have been great to see what he could do in the Nba.

+tbone24100 Shaq is also the biggest guy on the floor. He should dominate. Hank was undersized and dominated because of his motor. Just a tragic story. I would have loved to see him in the NBA.

I remember watching this on T I remember watching this game on TV. It was everything it was supposed to be. Chris Jackson was so good and Loyola Marymount was a delight to watch..they tried to shoot between every 4 to 7 seconds. Four seconds on the break and seven on the secondary break. I also remember thinking no matter how good gathers ,Kimble and Jackson were. Shaquille O’Neal was the real unicorn in the room.. it was obvious he was something special💯
