Everytime i hear Carl Sagan's quote in this I almost cry. Many people today are so fixated on material things, celebrities, what other people may think of us. Instead of exploring and getting to understand the vast worth and universe that we are privileged to have a spot in time of which we get to see it change.

The quote is Carl Sagan’s introduction to Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time”, the audio comes from the audiobook version Narrated by Michael Jackson (not musician), the quote is Carl Sagan’s however the audio is NOT Carl Sagan himself, nor is it Alan Watts in any case he is completely unrelated

"We go about our daily lives understanding almost nothing of the world. We give little thought to the machinery that generates the sunlight that makes life possible, to the gravity that glues us to an Earth that would otherwise send us spinning off into space, or to the atoms of which we are made and on whose stability we fundamentally depend. Few of us spend much time wondering why nature is the way it is; where the cosmos came from, or whether it was always here; if time will one day flow backward and effects precede causes; or whether there are ultimate limits to what humans can know. What is the smallest piece of matter. Why do we remember the past and not the future. And why there is a universe."

makes me thing about so many things. About hellos and goodbyes, life and death. Travelling, being alone, whilst being so close and intimate at the same time. It makes me happy to listen to this song as much as it makes me feel sad. Although humanity is here all together on this one planet as a species, as a family connected in so many ways, we still live as if everyone around us are complete strangers. Everyone needs to open their eyes and look ahead to our potential

So, I was listening to this song the other day when the Moon was a sliver and right next to Venus on the horizon. And then Alan Watts voice spoke in the song and I had the most existential self awareness moment of being so very small among the cosmos and I was at peace with this limited understanding and motivated by simply appreciating the existence of my current location in life.

19976232 Um, you see, he says this because time isn't really linear. It is not a straight line of things that had happened being on the one end and things that will happen on the other. Time is happening all at once. Every event is happening at once. It is us who give it a unit of measurement, because we think it is as we percieve it. It is also (as Ainstein theorized) relative with space. If you travel to the other end of the univerce, the earth will be decades in the past where you to to percieve it from there. Tha faster you travel away from something the more into the past it will be (not like from a city to another but from a galaxy to another). Time is relative to positioning and speed, really not as we percieve it. It would be possible to remember the future, and not the past.
@19976232
@19976232 10 жыл бұрын
***** I understand what you're saying, as I've learned it before in an astrophysics book. However, "future" means things that have not yet come to pass, and will exist at a later point in time. "Remember" means able to bring to one's mind an awareness of someone or something that one has seen, known, or experienced in the past. Therefore, remembering the future is not possible because it is in the definition of remember that one must have awareness of something in the past.

We go about our daily lives understanding almost nothing of the world We give little thought to the machinery that generates the sunlight that makes life possible; to the gravity that glues us to an earth that would otherwise send us spinning off in to space, or to the atoms of which we are made and on whose stability fundamentally depends. Few of us spend much time wonering why nature is the way it is; where the cosmos came from; or whether it was always there; if time will one day flow backward or whether there are ultimate limits to what humans can know. What is the smallest piece of matter ? Why do we remember the past and not the future ? And why there is a universe ?

+sud270602 This must be an early-Carl-Sagan. I don't think Carl wasted time with "Why" questions in his later (atheistic) life. He was great in his own way, but shut out a braoder concept of truth...because of his "chosen ignorance" of the why questions.

And it so happens that I am one of those few. It is intriguing how little we think about such seemingly minute things. Maybe because we are used to them. However, I feel it is necessary to think about these 'minute things' every once in a while, and thank them. Because if even one of theses things was gone, we wouldn't exist. We would be nothing but lifeless mass, something repeatable. But with life, with all of these 'minute things' perfectly balanced, we are unique. Life is unique, because every living thing can live how it wants, unbound by anything. Free. So thank you, 'minute things', for making me, and therefore allowing me to realize how important you are.

no. It's Alan Watts saying what Alan Watts said - it's his own stuff. Carl Sagan said plenty and in turn neither quoted or power phrased the other. Type in to Google word for word what Alan said and only Alan Watts quotes are referenced. It is, not nor has it ever been, one of Carl Sagan's best quotes ffs.

This music really makes me feel carefree from the bucket list of my own life. Makes me feel like all the things we are so desperate to experience can be seen through people we meet and beyond our mortality. Be thankful for the things you do see and try to understand the things you never will see. Because you will see it all eventually, but not all in life. There is another one after this where we will see it all!
