The rite of consecration of the bread and wine used to be different before the Second Vatican council. I've never seen how it looked back then, but evidently, it took longer than it does these days. Maybe it didn't last more than just several minutes, but some organists, like César Franck, played for much longer than it was needed. Franck was notorious for this, so the priest at Ste Clothilde had a small bell installed in order to signal him to stop playing... which Franck often ignored.

In fact, before the Second Vatican Council the whole of the Consectation at Mass (and indeed most of the other parts of the rite) were not heard by the congregation. France had the custom of the organ playing apropriate music while the liturgical action took place. At the Church of St Nicola in Paris you can still experience an Organ Mass, as the church uses the Old Rite

Wonderful. I can’t, however, imagine how to play that on my village organ. Have to apply for some lessons on the big cathedral….

I had just as much fun learning how this piece would have historically been used as registering it to be played for an offertory solo. It was nice to hear what is possible with more soft stop choices than I have on my two-manual Casavant of 26 ranks. It was much more of a challenge to register this piece than most other pieces that have a balance of loud and soft sections.

During the latin mass, and before the days in which microphones and loudspeakers were deemed necessary, the celebrant faced East with his back to the people. The words were often inaudible and it was not considered necessary for the congregation to here them. They could follow the ritual however by observing his gestures. The prayer of consecration was often "covered" by an organ piece. Nowadays, there's no reason you can't play this one while the people (or choir) are making their communion.

You are right. In what is now called the Extraordinary Form, the Elevation comes between Sanctus and Benedictus. The choir sings the Sanctus during the first part of the Canon and the Benedictus during the second. The Elevation covers the words of Consecration and the Elevations, which are accompanied by the ringing of bells. If the music of the Elevation is longer than strictly necessary, there would be a pause.

Deze opname bewijst dat Mutin ook een prachtige bijdrage heeft geleverd aan diverse Aristide Cavaillé Coll orgels waaronder dit instrument te Metz. Prima uitvoering overigens waarvoor mijn complimenten!

I also found this in "Organ Voluntaries" vol.1 - edited by Alexander Schreiner titled "Andante". It was published in 1965 by J. Fischer & Bro. with the Mormon audience in mind.

Dear Dcjmusic: If you go to youtube and type in lds conderence 1970 and scroll to nearly the end of the broadcast and you will actually hear Alexander Schreiner play this beautiful peace of music. Be careful of sound a bit loud. Greetings from Canada!

So I am episcoplian and small church at that. So when does the elevation go? I have seen it played in between Sanctus and Benedictus in 20th century French Recordings but I don't get it, does the priest literally stand there for five minutes holding the bread and wine up??
