As far as the gas drawing out the Gelth - imagine you have a fish in a fishbowl (The Gelth within the deceased) and you drop the fishbowl into a river (the room flooded with gas). Will the fish stay in the fish bowl where it is cramped? Most likely not. It would probably leave the fishbowl for the larger environment available to it so it can move about freely.

One thing I like about this episode is Rose challenging the Doctor over his plan to give the Gelth what they want. One of the reasons why I think Rose had a better dynamic with the 9th Doctor then the 10th is because 9 and Rose weren't afraid to challenge each other when one was in the wrong. 10 and Rose were too blindly in love with each other to do that, and would let each other get away with murder. Anyway, enjoyed the review. Looking forward to next time.
@SoundsSarcastic2343 жыл бұрын
I find both dynamics compelling because how their relationship progresses makes sense. The audience and Rose have just spent a series getting to know this mysterious Doctor and, by the end of series 1, know he’s on the up and up. Plus, add in the fact that 10 is just a more personable character and Rose is a people person, she should just know that he’s alright. Now that could potentially be dramatically boring, but series adds new elements to it: their self-assuredness and as you said feelings for one another. Both these things affect each other and both prove to be essential to their success and detrimental to their separation. The Doctor went from a loner doing the right thing out of guilt to a hero doing it for its own sake. Rose went from a directionless youth to an aware and confident young woman. They completed each other, and It would have been so easy for the writers to rest on their laurels or lazily retread the same ground, but they didn’t. They asked: what next? Where do people who need one another go from here? What does being with the Doctor for so long do to you? The answer: alienation and codependency. The 10th Doctor and Rose isn’t just the story of two people in love, but the story of every person whoever stays with the Doctor for too long. It’s not like Rose’s role is reduced in series 2. In fact, she’s more independent than ever - still reprimanding and having disagreements with the Doctor in little (Tooth and Claw - “being rude again”) and big (School Reunion - “your never even mention her [Sarah Jane]. Why not?”) ways. Tl;dr: both are good.

The Unquiet Dead is such an Underrated Historical Story. I love the characters, the world building it does, the beautiful scenery, and the story. To me, this is the Unofficial Christmas special for Christopher Eccleston.

This was the episode that finally made me a fan. Not only am I a huge fan of Charles Dickens, but I also love how he was portrayed in this story. After this, I was all in and enjoyed the rest of the season very much.

Im late with the comment but and im sure people have answered: by filling the room with gas, it gives the gelth a suitable atmosphere to float around in. One ambassador even says "Failing, atmosphere hostile!" when outside with Charles so it gives the Gelth the room to fly around in and ditch the corpses.

The Unquiet Dead was the first episode of revived Doctor Who to have me genuinely terrified. The Gelth's screams may be too loud, but they still send chills up and down my spine all these years later.

I could be entirely wrong and I'm sure there's some explanation in the episode, but for why the Gelf leave the bodies with a lot of gas, I like to compare it to Gridlock. The people in that episode need their cars to travel to their new homes but because of how many cars there are, they are incapable of doing so since they can't see where they're going. By having so much of the thing you need to move, it almost forces you to do the opposite. In this case, there is so much gas the Gelf are forced to travel through it. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's what I came up with on the spot.

Thank you for yet another splendid review. I have always had fond memories of this one, and was actually quite surprised to find some Whovians rated it quite lowly (though of course a diversity of views amongst Whovians or humans in general should not surprise one; vice le différence!). I had already become a fan through through the Classic series, but this was the first episode of the revived series that I remember really, really, enjoying. It still holds up well I think (other than concerns that a probably unintended subtext on refugees COULD be read into the not altogether unintended sting about the Gelth, but I think the point is more how in this instance the Doctor's compassion is allied with his guilt and his understandable desire to save someone, anyone from the Last Great Time War). Gwyneth is a great character too (the scene with her and Rose does a good job at fleshing her out) and Dickens is well realised and... But obviously you have just done a far better job than I of explaining this. Sorry, I can be prolix to the point of verbose in writing comments and poor at editing them before sending them.

Omg thank you I thought I was alone in thinking this was an underrated gem. I really do like this episode, despite some pretty small flaws, but my favourite thing is Rose and The Doctor butting heads about the morality of the situation. It shows Rose's very understandable concern, as well as The Doctor and his efforts to save a species after causing the death of his own, as well as showing how alien he is with how willing he is to let the gelth use the bodies, and how harsh and cold he is with his explanation. Such a good episode
@gwenfairholm8080 Жыл бұрын
My theory on why flooding the room with gas drew the Gelf out of the corpses is that it's a matter of pressurization, like an airplane. The decomposing bodies are pressurized with gas, hence why corpses bloat, and that pressurized system can contain the gelf. But if you fill the room with gas, equalizing the pressure between the room and the inside of the bodies, there's no longer anything holding the gelf inside the bodies, so they start permiating into the room. It even explains why we can see the blue gelf gas coming out of the bodies while their piloting them because it's not a perfect pressurisation like an air tank, some gas will escape

Here's a fun bit of trivia the character of Gabriel Sneed was originally envisioned to be much younger having David Tennant to be cast in the role of Sneed but Gabriel was later reworked to be an elderly man.

For the Gelth getting drawn out, I think what they were going for was them getting diffused into the gas, like a how how of you pour water into a bole of salt it will dissolve into water.

I would have thought that because there was gas in the air, the Gelth would kind of overflow. Like if you put a fishbowl in the bath and turned on the tap. The fish will probably end up leaving the bowl one way or another.

Up next: Aliens of London and World War III. For that review, I'll be making myself a bet. If there isn't at least one reference to the current UK Conservative party, how "crestfallenly relevant" the subject matter is, or that episode being an example as to how supposedly "apolitical" the show was prior to Series 11, I'm going to be downing a full bottle of vodka.

It’s great that the first three episodes all have the doctor try but fail to save the day & the woman introduced & developed that episode saves the day (in all but Rose’s case they sacrifice their lives fixing the doctor’s mistake) And I can’t remember if Harriet Jones does the same (or at least provide necessary help) next story. I do know Father’s Dad, Peter saves the day & Rose again saves the day in Dalek & the Finale. Nancy saves the day in Empty child & Tardis saves the day in Boom Town.

I think it's because if you had two gas canisters one oxygen and one nitrogen and emptied in them in the air they'd be mixed up and not able to get separated again... (same with liquids) Is it this simple? 🤔 (Sorry... that last question wasn't meant to condescending I'm questioning whether I'm right)

Great Review as always Mrtardis I greatly enjoyed The Unquiet Dead and always find it to be very underrated by the community definitely Mark Gatiss’s best story in the televised show (An Adventure In Space And Time definitely his best). As for the minor plot hole of gwenyth growing up under the rift but only getting taken into the house when she was 12 I always thought she always grew up there and that the house belonged to her parents with mr sneed taking over the house once they died but maybe I just assumed that instead of the episode actually stating it either way I do think that should have been clarified a little better to the audience.
