For those wondering about how this can break canon - the Ninth Doctor is the last of the pre-Silence of the Library Doctors to meet River on Big Finish. They have always managed to come up with an excuse for it.

as an aromantic person it was truly delightful to not only get an explanation at the difference between aro and ace, but, i simply adore that a piece pf media has finally labeled the doctor as aromantic! it was truly a delight to finally hear that after most actors abd a lot of writers often just referred to him as asexual, when it was clear that some of them mean both! the doctor has always been something that writers and actors feel existed outside of the romantic and sexual parts of society, and to finally one of them absolutely canon was a delight i especially adored how this box set explores River and the Doctor with the revelation in mind that they explicitly say he feels no romantic emotions/ "i don't do that". the way they are both incredibly important to eachother in ways of companionship, just the label of romantic relationship doesn't apply here, but the connection is deep, fasinating and delightful! (even if nine felt romantic attraction to River later on, he would still be concidered aromantic, as this label is a spectrum!) i think the sentence tgat got me the most with the last story, was: River: this is the most romantic thing you ever did for me (or something along those lines) Nine: and i have a whole lifetime to prove you otherwise. many people think of this line as "big finish not sticking the landing and make River and Nine romantic anyway, but to me, as an aromantic, and other aromantic doctor who fans who i asked the opinion on, see it as: River seeing that gesture as romantic, but Nine expresses to her that this doesn't have to he a romantic gesture, and simply doing this for her doesn't have to be a romantic thing at all, all that matters is that they are together, in however way they are simply a beautiful exploration into non traditional relationship between River and Nine that i think both deeply needed, and us an fans too to see the doctor through this much discussed lens but with the proper vocabulary to express it! (ie calling the doctor aro ace instead of just resorting to asexual as if it means the same thing)

Archipelago has quickly become my most replayed Big Finish story. So so satisfying. Agreed that it's one of the best Doctor and River stories

I genuinely believe he’s leaving because his story arc is going nowhere. I reckon if they bought Billie in to do some stories set during Series 1 he’d have stayed a bit longer.

⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠@@Jayforeman3047actually it’s Eccleston. He’s the one who’s been adamant about having no pre-Rose companions, or tackling the time war. The writers somewhat have their hands tied by those restrictions. ‘The Green Gift’ even felt like Big Finish doing a test run to try and ease Eccleston into the idea of having new companions.
