As for the saving him part. There are some unspoken laws in warfare. In this case, if a battleship is sinking, you are not allowed to harm or kill the survivors whilst they are in the water. Same with a dog fight. If a jet is shot down and the pilot is alive and parachuting down, enemy pilots are not allowed to kill him on the ground or whilst going down. It's not an official law but more in the sense of dignity in war. A fair fight, like the song "No bullets fly". There is no honor is shooting down a plane with no defenses.

A few cool little tidbits: The Bismarck is referred to with male pronouns in the song exactly as he was in real life, because his captain insisted such a powerful warship could not be referred to as a lady. The orientation of her guns in the video is true to how they were when Bismarck was sunk in real life. All the battle damage she sustained was historically accurate as well. The Swordfish biplanes that damaged her are also a fun fact: being outdated WW1 era planes also meant the advanced targeting systems of the Bismarck's anti aircraft guns were unable to track the slower planes since they were designed to shoot down faster planes. Similarly, the canvas fuselage meant any rounds that hit the planes would overpenetrate and do minimal damage to the aircraft. The radio at the start also reports on how Bismarck sunk the HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, and the subsequent British response to dedicate their fleets in the Atlantic to sinking the Bismarck

@Knasterreal1 In the final fight RN and Polish ships still launched torpedoes to Bismarck. And even if the Bismarck doesn't sunk by those torps it doesn't mean those torps not hit the ship, but caused no or minimal damage. Even the Swordfish planes hit Bismarck more than one time, BUT only the one which hit the Rudder caused anything. And even that planes pilot thinked it was uneffective until he returned to Ark Royal and got the info. (We can see his face on the video as he angry after the uneffective hit).

And yes. Bismarck displaced 49,500 tons fully loaded and was crewed by 2,065 men. Only around 400 managed to live to abandon ship and out of them, only 114 would live, mostly due to the British abandoning the rescue effort due to a possible U-Boat sighting. One of the men picked up by the Brits died of his wounds and 5 of the 114 were picked by a U-Boat and a German trawler.
@Rybo-Senpai4 жыл бұрын
Well I wouldn't blame the British for abandoning the rescue operation given the Germans did the same thing off the coast of Africa regarding a Passenger liner where 3 Uboats were engaged in rescue operations but had to break off after the Americans decided to attack the Uboats and in turn the survivors of the Liner the lead Boat had sunk, the ships survivors were made up of British Soldiers, Italian POW's being transported and a mix of civilians including Women and Children. During the rescue operation Vichy French ships were on route to assist as were it is claimed some Nearby British Warships but ultimately due to the actions of the US Army Airforce operating from the Ascension Islands, then and now British Territory and a B24 Liberator on Patrol, the officer in charge of US Forces ordered the aircraft to attack, forcing the Germans hand... As the Germans had done to the British after the sinking of Bismark... Sadly in War there are challenges that I feel today it would be difficult to judge as we for the most part have no experience of such events on such a scale. Most who had some experience in war of that scale.. Are sadly already passed or just about too, as it currently stands I believe and I could be wrong. All original members of Easy Company as seen in Band of Brothers have sadly passed on while some of the men who joined the company after the start of combat operations as Replacements are surviving.

I'm not really sure how you could do a reaction video to a song that you admit you don't know much about. Surely you would do some homework on the subject first to know the historical value of the song and story. I never liked history much in school and dropped it as an elective when I could but as an adult I got a passion for military history specifically via a passion of building models. I researched the hell out of what I was building. Books, online articles, The History Channel etc. *shrug* I believe the images of Bismarck and video came from a partnership with a company that makes video games. I forget their name though. But from memory this isn't the only video they have collaborated in. One thing that surprises me is that nobody seems to notice the significance of the pocket watch. Watch the last moments of the video again. And yes the Royal Navy did rescue survivors for as long as it was safe for them to do so. Over 100 were rescued as opposed to HMS Hood where only 4 lived to tell the story of the catastrophic sinking. I'm sure you as a teacher would advise your students to do their homework before submitting a presentation on a subject yet it feels like you went into this cold. You could do some research on the band to know who they are, what they write and sing about etc and still have a fresh unbiased opinion on the content.

I agree, going into this I thought he was going to point out key points of the music video and talk about their importance and was a bit disapointed. Especially so since the bismark is an incredibly important ship not just in terms of naval war history, but to the entirety of ww2 since, if the bismark got out into the atlantic that would have been it, the germans would have eventually pushed the british back and cut the us supply line and would have effectivley won the war. And considering the bismark sunk the hood with relative ease that assumption isn't too far off (though to be fair the hms hood was an old ship, especially around the time ww2 came around).

The pursuit of the Bismarck is considered one of the most thrilling and exciting naval operations of all times, and this video - for a music video - actually goes a surprisingly good job of telling it's story. If you listen to the radio at the start, you'll hear the commentator say how Bismarck sank the battlecruiser Hood. The first firefight you see is taken from that action, the Battle of the Denmark Straits, the Hood has been sunk, and Bismarck is exchanging gunfire with HMS Prince of Wales. The next action you see shows Swordfish biplane torpedo aircraft flying off HMS Ark Royal, attacking the Bismarck, with one torpedo slamming into her stern. This torpedo was the battleship's nemesis, jamming her steering gear and leaving her uncontrollable. The final firefight is when the British finally sank the German battleship, including the torpedoes being launched from the cruiser HMS Dorsetshire and hitting Bismarck, the last weapons to be fired against her. Officially this cruiser was credited with sinking the Bismarck, although this was only a technicality, as she was the last ship to hit her during the final battle. This video was all made for the song, and the ships are really accurate! Indeed, while I don't pretend to be an expert, I have studied this ship quite a lot, and I can't see anything misplaced on the ship in the video, compared to what she was like in real life. The only slight criticism I would make is in the final battle, you see a ship with four triple turrets fire at Bismarck. There were no cruisers like that in the final action. The nearest was HMS Sheffield, but she was part of Force H (along with the previously mentioned Ark Royal), and didn't take part. It would also have been nice if they had included the battleship HMS Rodney in the final battle. Her 16" guns proved to be totally devastating, with one of their shells taking out both Bismarck's main forward turrets. Still, I suspect the money involved in making this video was already nothing to sniff at, and adding Rodney would have added yet more expense.

Bismarck was built by the kriegsmarine (German Navy) to keep the atlantic under German rule, it had the job of blowing up ships that escorted supplies across the atlantic or just British warships in general, the pride of the British Navy, the HMS Hood was sunk by the Bismarck, whilst the accompanying ship, prince of wales was heavily damaged, that was the first contact between the Bismarck and the British. Knowing the ability of the Bismarck, the British wanted to sink it immediately, and hunted down the Bismarck, finally sinking it with a mix of outdated swordfish torpedo bombers, and cannon fire from British warships. The Bismarck was ultimately sunk because his own crew scuttled him, and yes "him" is used, the Bismarck goes by "him" and not "she", the captain asked that the Bismarck be viewed as a "he" in light of the ships power and might. Close inspection of the wreckage confirmed that none of the torpedoes or shells had penetrated the second layer of the inner hull. The point of a history teacher reacting is that they're supposed to know something about it. I could've made a reaction video like this. "Random guy that doesn't know much about the Bismark reacts!"
@anaveragehumanbeing36694 жыл бұрын
Mr Pugdy Well I mean the title is kind of misleading, but a war historian is different from a history teacher. History isn’t just 1939 to 1945, it goes back thousands of years, and to expect a person to know facts about a single ship in a world war, in all of world history, is kind of ridiculous, granted it is one of the largest ships ever created. You can’t really blame a history teacher about this, history teachers often don’t even teach WW2. They teach about things like Rome, Greece, etc, things that have completely affected history, religion, and technology. The Bismarck, on the other hand, was ship during WW2 that sunk 1 WW1 era upgraded dreadnought and then it sunk. History is more than just WW2, let alone a single ship. But yeah, if your gonna title history teacher reacts to Bismarck, people would usually infer they know lots about it, that’s pretty misleading if you think it had a crew of 50 lol.
@blackshield16964 жыл бұрын
@@anaveragehumanbeing3669 Well, the thing that triggered me the most was the fact, that a (history) teacher wasn´t able to do 20 minutes of basic research before reacting. I mean come on man, some plain facts about Sabaton and the Bismarck aren´t rocket science. Additionally i was kind of shocked about the fact, that he, who obviously studied a history related subject, wasn´t able to bring on some basics about the time frame. I thought someone who teaches something should at least be somewhat interested in the matter. And yes, WW2 is only a small part of human history but the timeframe covered by most history classes, somewhere starts with ancient Greece and ends with the End of the Cold War. For the most part only 5 or 6 "major" eras in between are addressed and thats it. So the chance that WW2 is a major topic is quite high and therefore briefly thematizing the Bismarck isn´t that far fetched- although it´s definitely no need. To end it. I have no grudge against him and nobody must be ashamed if he doesn´t excactly knows whats going on all the time. But please, do your research...
@anaveragehumanbeing36694 жыл бұрын
Blackshield I mean when you react to something you generally don’t research beforehand, which leads to a genuine reaction. And history is usually taught from the start of mankind, the first civilizations, and such, ww2 and the Cold War era is usually taught in college and sometimes in High school, I don’t think he is a college professor or H.S. History teacher, but please correct me if I’m wrong. And I said that I think the title is misleading and some of the things he thought were just plain ridiculous too, I’m just stating that you can’t expect someone to know a lot about a era, let alone a battle. And I’m not entirely sure on what you mean by do your research, are you saying that to me or the history teacher.

There is all sorts of history about the Bismark and the battles she fought. When the Bismark first opens fire in the video, she is targeting the HMS Hood. The Swordfish Biplane that dropped the first torpedo is what sealed the ships fate. Although it did not penetrate the armor belt, the concussion of the blast jammed the rudders, the Bismark could only cruise in a circle, allowing the British navy to catch her and finish her off. Also, there is a scene where the Bismark fires one last salvo as she was capsizing. The company that does World of Warships did the CGI just for this video. BTW, Sabaton is a Swedish band.

Yeah they focus on historical settings for their tracks. The Bismarck was one of two "bismarck class" warships constructed for the Nazi Navy (The Kriegsmarine) in 1936 Named after Otto Von Bismarck it was said to be unsinkable. Of course it did eventually sink after a hunt from two aircraft carriers, thirteen cruisers and twenty one destroyers after they were deployed to hunt and sink the already wounded Bismarck. Its wreckage was found roughly 4,791 m west of Brest in France.

Sabaton is pretty big but where they’re getting the budget for the music video is from a game company called wargamming. The company collaborated with the band to promote their game World of Warships. Sabaton makes all their songs based on historic battles, wars, and military figures. Bismarck and Tirpitz were both the flagships of the German navy, the Kriegsmarine, both were greatly feared and it took multiple ships and planes just to bring down the Bismarck alone. As a last act of defiance the Bismarck pointed its guns to the sky as it sunk and you can still see it where it sank.

Bismarck was hunted down after it sank HMS Hood and gave HMS Prince of Wales a severe paddling, Churchill ordered everything in the area after it, there were 2 aircraft carriers, 5 battleships and goodness knows how many cruisers and destroyers looking for it. Admiral Lutjens was heading for France so they could repair the damage taken in the fight against Hood and Prince of Wales when they were attacked by HMS Ark Royal's Swordfish torpedo bombers which were able to fly lower than the Bismarck's AA guns could aim. One of them scored a lucky hit on the rudder and jammed it so the Bismarck was reduced to going in large circles, allowing the King George V and Rodney to catch up. These two battleships pummelled the Bismarck into scrap, the Rodney was armed with 3 turrets each with triple 16" guns and fired over 400 rounds at the Bismarck at point blank range. Eventually the Bismarck's stern broke off where it had been weakened by the torpedo strike (although some sources say it was scuttled). It was obviously a very capable and dangerous ship, which is why the Royal Navy were forced to send everything they had to get rid of it.

So all the lyrics if the video pertaining to her characteristics is accurate it is the Bismarck. After sinking the HMS hood she gets engaged by planes launched from the HMS Ark Royal and takes a torpedo to her aft starboard side which locked her rudder at 12° meaning she was stuck turning in a massive circle,then the HMS king George and another engaged from 12 miles and took 45+ mins to disable her monster guns then spent 3 hours and over 500 shells to finally sink her.

Fun fact, the German AA guns were designed to hit newer, faster planes, which is why when the Swordfish came to torpedo the Bismarck it's AA guns were all but useless as the shells detonated to far ahead of the planes because the Swordfish flew about half the speed of newer (at the time) planes.

Sir if I may make a couple comments. During World War Two the Bismark class Fast Battleship carried approximately 2,000 Sailors and Naval Officers (100 odd Naval Officers, and 1,900 odd Sailors), the Biskmark was not heavily penetrated by the engaging ships during the final engagement, as the battlecrusers and small ships sent against it did not have heavy enough guns. Kriegsmarine is the German name for the Navy, and the reason the English Royal Navy pulled the Sailor (Enlisted as can be seen from uniform) out of the water was due to a code of conduct that has been accepted across the world for several hundred years (no later then then mid 1700 [qualifier: European nations I do not know outside of that]) and is still practiced among military ships (after engagement) and civilian ships.
