This is an absolutely fantastic video. I enjoyed every second of this, and very happy that someone else finally brought up The 90s Arcade racer project again, and discuss how frustrating it is that their have been no future updates on it's status. Also, I'd like to mention that I have actually seen several references to Daytona USA in several other media's that were not discussed in this video, if your interested in me telling you what they are, just let me know and I'll definitely tell you all that I know of so far!
@MrThunderwing4 жыл бұрын
Yeah dude, I'm definitely interested in these other Daytona references.
@hotrod_hornet4 жыл бұрын
@@MrThunderwing Well as it turns out, Grand theft Auto 5 has actually referenced Daytona USA, twice as of now. The first time being a Livery for the Banshee 900r, which is referencing the Hornet. gta.fandom.com/wiki/Banshee_900R?file=Banshee900R-CustomizationOptions-GTAO-front.png The livery itself is a bit... Abstract. However I can tell it's referencing the Automatic Hornet by having a blue coat along the bonet and roof, along with a white stripe going vertically across the lower half of the vehicle. And the last bit of evidence I could find is the number 42 on the hood as apposed to the 41 on the real thing. Why Rockstar decided to reference the Hornet in the form of a Dodge Viper back in 2017 is something I'll never understand. And the second reference being a car which was added in a racing update in 2019 known as the Declasse Hotring Sabre. The car itself is based off of the exact same model of Chevy Lumina that the Hornet is based off of and includes covered headlights, just like in Daytona 1-2. However it unfortunately LACKS an actual Hornet reference livery, most likely due to it already being done on the Banshee. (Rockstar Games aren't exactly the smartest developers out there.) However modders of GTA 5 have actually made their own Hornet styled livery for the HotRing Sabre known as the "Sabre Sports Class" that actually stays accurate within GTA 5s Lore, and is a beautiful homage to the Hornet. www.gta5-mods.com/paintjobs/lore-friendly-livery-41-sabre-sport-class Super Smash Brothers Ultimate actually has an F-Zero Medley which is actually sung by Takanobu Mistuyoshi! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXPOmnSYj9GAasU (On a side note, I'm actually very much hoping the Hornet gets into Smash Ultimate in the next fighters pass dlc. I could literally spend hours talking about it and every little bit of Daytona content I would squeeze into the game) Anyways, in Sonic Mania, there is a Hornet High-Class News Van in Studiopoluis Act 1, which acts as a teleportation device. And In Forza Horizon 4, there is a level in which you drive a modified Chevy Monte-Carlo, as a part of a set of missions that are call backs to old racing games! It's rather interesting, and I believe you get a Daytona themed Emote once completing the challenge. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d17GaGqbjLOKmtE And that's about all I know as of now!

I owned the original Daytona USA on the Saturn. One of three games I got on Christmas 95. Loved it. I had only watched the arcade game in bowling alleys, etc, before hand. Not played. And was too young to understand about graphics and framerate. The game not have looked like the arcade version, but it still played great. Took many hours of trying, but I eventually figured out by myself how to drift, and once I did, I spent absolute hours playing this game. I even did the 80 / 40 / 20 lap options. I even managed to buy a Saturn race wheel, and I remember after one 80 lap session of the beginners lap, the skin peeling from my thumb because of how hard I was playing the game. I also remember colouring pictures of the sponsors i.e. Gallop, and pinning them on my wall whilst I played the game. Yes, the game played better with the wheel. It was my first race wheel, the official saturn one, and being able to make slight turns as opposed to tapping the D-pad was something else for sure. Man, I loved the Saturn version. I know so many hate its short comings, but F it, I loved it. It had the one thing that counts in any racing game - the gameplay. It still played great, once you learnt the layout and the popup wasnt so bad.

And you are right about the Saturn port, what people have to remember is that when this was ported to the sega Saturn back In the mid 90s there was no ports of Daytona on any other system before the Saturn, and the fact that sega even ATTEMPTED to bring it into the home was amazing, yes it was rushed, HOW EVER sega was still able to give us Daytona USA in the home at the time and it was a pretty amazing feeling

Great Video Mr.Thunderwing. Daytona Fans like me always enjoy your content. The series has been around for a long time and SEGA really deserves credit for the first game because it's full with nostalgia. About that note you mentioned about Daytona USA 2 not ported to home consoles, I would just say, forget about it. If SEGA isn't releasing the game on modern home consoles we got emulation which is the only way to enjoy Daytona 2 at home. The new Daytona Championship USA overall is not that great IMO. They completely dropped the three and decided to revamped the whole game. One thing it didn't make sense is the tracks. One, you got original tracks. Two, the original tracks are completely the same layout but different environment. It seems like the other courses are mirrored. plus, the soundtrack from Daytona 2001 is also present. I don't think SEGA should release the remake and they need to make a sequel. I know Daytona is everybody's favorite classic but a remake is something that they shouldn't done in the first place. I want SEGA to develop a true sequel to Daytona USA 2.

I make a star in this video at 1:04:15. Brilliant video documenting/reviewing and combining every single DAYTONA USA game into one video to celebrate it's 25 Anniversary! I watched it all the way through from beginning to end to celebrate 25 years of the "King of Arcade-Racers" along with you and I don't think anyone'else could make a video like this any better than you (I don't think anyone will or has). Now if only SEGA would just finally get their heads out their arses and port DAYTONA USA 2: Power Edition to consoles and make an "actual" DAYTONA USA 3 (maybe Sumo Digital could help develop that as they usually don't like to let us true fans down or better yet, if AM2 were to ever make a come back to make the true third sequel). And as for '90's Arcade Racer which we was supposed to have got ages ago, I agree the creator of that game should sell it to another gaming company that would oblige to finally release that game to all current-gen systems as well because then at least that'd do something for us as well to keep us going. Cheers, to DAYTONA USA!!!

Al old buddy, old pal - what an amazing and informative upload. Watched it from start to finish and really thoroughly enjoyed it :) You really should do more voice-overs on your videos as you have a perfect narrator's voice too! I've been meaning to contact you as I wanted to ask you what your thoughts were on the perfect version of Daytona to play at home. I've relly got back into playing it recently and have tried every version on every format. Although the original arcade version is ok on the Model 2 emulator the draw distances are a bit of a let down. The PS3 and XBOX 360 versions are good as they don't have that problem but it means the effort of having to connect up old consoles to have a quick game which is a bit of a drag (it's a tad slow on the RPCS3 emulator). Anyway, just wanted to ask what your 'go to' version was these days? Hope all is well with you buddy and looking forward to some more amazing uploads :)
@MrThunderwing6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Gary mate, thanks for the complements, greatly appreciated! Hmmm, I think the Model 2 version is probably the one that I play the most, despite the PS3 version being graphically superior and having better FFB with my wheel, purely because it's easier to play and operate the brake and accelerator with my wheel clamped to my PC desk. I've got a little coffee table I can use with the wheel when I'm playing on the PS3 from my sofa, but it's not really super comfortable to use like that and I normally end up with back ache after prolonged playing sessions (ahhh, the joy of being over 40 now...). My PS3's permanently under my TV in a big cabinet with a few other consoles, so it's not really any kind of hassle to use that version, and for a quick 'pick up 'n play' version using the Dualshock 3 it's ideal. I've heard people mention that the 360 version has actually got a higher resolution than the PS3 version, but TBH in old games like this I can't really tell much difference between whether it's in 720p or 1080p. I've got a few ideas for more 'talky' videos that I'll crack on with soon ;) In the meantime though *cough* shameless plug *cough* why not check out my Talky video playlist, where I look at some other Sega classics like Outrun and After Burner? kzbin.info/aero/PLAevDYyhvzHq8B3mB2UIxt5ktaGoqdQnO

All I could think of with the Daytona car in CCE is that it's completely overpowered, at least in the NA NTSC version. Fantastic work dude. I am a really big fan of daytona USA too. I play on ps3 version, the best version I've seen of the 94 arcade version(sadly no-one online, so I play mostly on survival mode, I really enjoy it. Too bad we don't have a scoreboards on reverse tracks) the dreamcast version and the supermodel version. Thank you for the video.

Nearly two whole hours of Daytona? That's quite some dedication dude! Unlike other Sega classics like say Space Harrier or Outrun, I've always kind of admired Daytona USA from afar. I don't have a racing wheel nor do I have a PS3, XBOX 360, or XBOX One, so I've never really been able to get really good at the arcade version. I do own the Saturn version, but It's just alright. I still wish that Sega had brought the console ports over to Steam, you'd think porting it to PC would be a no-brainer. Sega Racing Classic even ran on PC hardware! But no, this is modern Sega we're talking about, so of course not. As for Daytona Championship USA, despite the laziness of the track and music recycling, I admire the fact that Sega brought Daytona back for a more modern audience. The lack of an H-shifter on some machines is a pretty big flaw though, and personally I think the colors are way too over-saturated, but it's the thought that counts I guess. That part about the Model 2 emulator reminded me of my old desktop PC and how it would only run the Supermodel emulator at around 10 FPS. Last year it finally started to break down and I managed to score a new PC with an AMD Ryzen 5, and now it runs at a smooth 60 fps at 1920x1080. Funnily enough MAME was also the first emulator I ever used, mostly to play stuff like Rad Mobile and Outrunners. It blew my mind at the time that finally I could play these awesome games on my own PC. I'm still really pissed at Nicalis for putting 90's Super GP on hold, I was looking forward to playing that one. The game was completely finished too, IIRC. Nicalis even have it listed on their website as "Coming Soon", but at this rate I'm guessing it won't be released until 2090 :P Anyways, that's enough pointless rambling from me. I really enjoyed the video and thought it was rather well produced. You did a better job of celebrating Daytona's 25th anniversary than Sega themselves, heh.
@MrThunderwing6 жыл бұрын
Cheers buddy. Yeah, supermodel used to run at about 20 - 25fps for me on my old P4 (this was with the new GPU and extra RAM I'd previously got for Daytona USA). A single core just won't cut it with Model 3. Not too long after that though I got an i5, which is still the PC I'm using now, although I upgraded the GPU in it about 2 years ago (not such a scary prospect now as it was back then).

Still play the DC version with the wheel. Love the XBL version too. It's nice to have both versions as they have different reasons to recommend them.

That's the ideal home setup for me: one gives you a killer version of the arcade game, and the other gives you plenty of extra goodies (more cars, tracks, etc), with a different "look". Just depends on your mood.
Huge fan of SEGA racing games just like yourself. Subbed

I remember renting Daytona on Dreamcast back in the day. You're right those slippery controls made it impossible! The car was all over the place. I even rented a 2nd time a few weeks later because I wanted to like it so bad. Lol. Glad I hear the proper Dreamcast wheel solves the problem. I plan on giving it another try in the future. Beautiful looking game. Currently enjoying it on 360. and I have fond memories of the Saturn Original. Just an amazing game.
@MrThunderwing6 жыл бұрын
I've never actually tried the official Dreamcast wheel, my good experiences of playing it that way are using the emulator DEMUL with my DFGT wheel. The 3rd party one I used with my actual Dreamcast wasn't brilliant. Like you, I was so disappointed that I couldn't play it properly with a pad, especially since it looked so good!
@ericolson22863 жыл бұрын
Actually I was able to play it pretty well with a pad, but I need about 5-10 minutes to get the "feel" down with each play session. Once you get the required "soft touch" approach down, the game really does play reasonably well, even with a pad. But yeah, it can be rather herky-jerky otherwise. And I'm ALWAYS amazed when someone can actually tame the Unicorn...I sure as hell never could.

Just a quick point of order, the Hornet is actually based off the Chevy Lumina. NASCAR's Chevy drivers used the Lumina from 1989-1994, including the cars from Days of Thunder, which I think the game also takes a lot of inspiration off of. The crew chief uses a lot of lines directly or almost directly from the movie.
@MrThunderwing4 жыл бұрын
Well, the information I used was from a reliable Sega based website. I've heard from other people saying this other car was the basis for the Hornet, but I can't find anything official from Sega or AM2 that confirms this.
@ddearing4 жыл бұрын
@@MrThunderwing Haha, understood. The Beretta and Lumina were similar looking, but if you look at a photo of a NASCAR race from the early 90's, the Chevy teams are driving the Lumina which has the exact body style, grill and all, of the original Hornet. Always thought that was cool as a kid that the car looked exactly like the real NASCAR stock cars.

The music that's playing when I'm talking, at the exact point you time stamped, is the boss music from Revenge of Shinobi on the Megadrive. It's called Terrible Beat. The music that comes straight after is the tune After Burner, from the arcade game of the same name.
@nidhoggstrike4 жыл бұрын
@@MrThunderwing Afterburner, that's the one! Thank you so much! I knew there was something there, I got a very strong notion of a cabinet with blinking lights, I couldn't quite picture it but it resonated. And no wonder why, the sit-down Afterburner cabinet was my very first gaming experience. It was not the movable cabinet, sadly.

One thing people forget is Sega make these arcades from the ground up. The actual game, the cab, the music and gameplay is one big venture. The rolling start, the instant action, the music and short experience is all designed like an amusement park. 30 years ago these machine were “attractions” and not “video games”. Going to the arcade was a day out, much like going to the fair. So when Sega made arcade games, they were designed to turn a profit. When you break down games like Daytona, its a bare bones game but it has enough pizazz to make you slide a dollar (or pound coin) and play. Sega brought you experiences, not gaming.
@MrThunderwing6 жыл бұрын
In spite of that though, the lastability and replay value of the original Daytona USA is such that I'm still playing it today, over 25 years later.

In case anyone is wondering, race wheels that are designed for Xbox One (Logitech G920) do not work properly on Daytona USA's HD port on 360. The Xbox One will just recognize it as a normal controller. No force feedback and you gotta turn a lot since it thinks the wheel is the analog stick.
@MrThunderwing4 жыл бұрын
Oh man, that sucks.

@@MrThunderwing Well at least I have the arcade versions of 1 and 2 running with my wheel. Now if only I could figure out how to get 3 to run with the wheel instead of my Xbox controller.
@MrThunderwing4 жыл бұрын
@@apgrenus For Daytona Championship I needed to use a program called x360ce to emulate a 360 pad to make it work with my wheel, along with a load of custom patches and stuff to get it working in the first place and get FFB working. The game is now playable using an arcade loader called Teknoparrot, if you're having no joy with your wheel using the standalone Daytona launcher, I'd give it a try in that instead.
@apgrenus4 жыл бұрын
@@MrThunderwing Sorry for the late reply, but I have tried using Teknoparrot to get the game working with my wheel and still no luck. Although I was able to get it back to working again with my xbox controller. I have to enable xinput in order for it to run. Otherwise it just crashes on startup.

What I want to see is an ultimate version of Daytona U.S.A. In terms of tracks, we'd have Three-Seven Speedway, Dinosaur Canyon, and Seaside Street Galaxy from the original game, Desert City and National Park Speedway from Championship Circuit Edition, Silver Ocean Causeway from Deluxe, Astro Waterfall Speedway, Joyopolis 2020 Amusement Park, and Virtua City from 2 as well as the combined course from Power Edition, and finally Circuit Pixie, Rin Rin Rink, and Mermaid Lake from 2001. In addition, Lakeside Castle and Metro City would get their own layouts to match their respective aesthetics. All the CPU cars from previous games would be available to play as and you could customize all the cars at least as much as you could in Daytona USA 2001. There would also be Mirror Mode and Endurance Races that stretch the length of a race to about 15 minutes (i.e. 51 laps at Three-Seven Speedway, 20 laps at Dinosaur Canyon, and 9 laps at Seaside Street Galaxy). As for online matches, standard races would allow eight players at a time while endurance races would raise that limit to sixteen. What do you think of these ideas. Do you think they could be added to?
@MrThunderwing5 жыл бұрын
Good ideas one and all, I'd love to see some kind of ultimate edition version of Daytona with all this in. If Sega had any sense they'd release it. Maybe add the Scud Race tracks in as well for good measure and an Outrun themed beach one. Add a Mario Maker style option to play with modern or retro graphics (Model 2, Model 3, Dreamcast or Championship arcade style) and you'd be onto a winner.
