The Bennett Model Railroad

5 жыл бұрын

Happy New Year! Since I posted a Christmas Day update, I thought it was only proper to also post one on New Year's Day.
I continued working in the Roundhouse area. I installed Shorty's machine shop, which I show and also describe the modifications/additions I made to the structure. The area behind the roundhouse was made ready for scenery and the initial layer of ground covering is in place.
I also took a leap of faith and decided to paint/weather the Walther's turntable bridge. I very carefully masked all critical areas and gave it a quick coat of a Rustoleum "grimy black" Primer. I then weathered with chalks and after adding a figure installed the operator shed. For possible future use I did add a means to connect to the top of the arch for electric power lines.
I did some other detailing and scenery items, slowly working down the engine service area.
I again want to thank everyone for watching these babble-filled updates throughout 2018 and I look forward to a productive 2019.
Thank you for watching. If you enjoyed, please Like, Share and if not a subscriber please Subscribe so you don't miss any future updates, Product Information Videos, and other Model Railroading related videos!

WoW! Ya never fail! The scene is the best one yet. The turntable, the roundhouse, and repair facilities look sooo good together. Your channel is always inspirational. Happy New Year Mr Bennett. If you got any yard jobs? I would be willing to work at the roundhouse,or repair shop. Have a safe, prosperous, and healthy new year Sir. p.s. When you finish this yard scene I would get someone to put ya in modelrailroader magazine. Because the detail ,and your skills would be a "no brainer"!

I resaw this episode again and it got me thinking. You might have spot for an access road for the people who works there, maybe an small access road from the factory slash warehouse across the street, also a small parking which might fit nocely behind thosebackground buildings along the details you plan to have.... I have become such a nitpicker now adays. lol

Looks really great! One thing popped in my mind that you might need to have ventilation stacks in each stalls of the roundhouse right above the smoke stack of the steamers to ventilate out the smoke.- Now as the major thing is done, I guess there will be a few oil drums also needed around the shacks. As always you pulled this off excellent! The wholescene looks very cool. You mentioned earlier that your roundhouse is a small one but it is enough to handle those engines for the yard and a local services in Eugene area. Something I have seen somewhere is a short piece of non connected track near the shop area that was to keep freight car trucks waiting for attention, maybe they used some sort of mobile crane to haul them to a waiting freight car or a truck to give them a short hauö to the rip track. A very Happy New Year wishes from Sweden!.

Hey Rob. Loving the layout. I know this will be a bit of a wild idea. But for the refuse area behind the sheds. If you can get hold of an old steam locomotive and paint it up like it's been scrapped. So it would be heavily rusted and overgrown. Would make for a great centre piece for that area.

Looks really great, Rob! Just one little nit to pick. Steam locos almost always go into the roundhouse front first. The back of the roundhouse is the widest so there is more room for men to work on the cylinders. Also the clerestory is near the back where engines smokestacks would be.

Rob: Happy New Year to you and yours. The engine terminal looks great and I really like the way you have covered up the black area under your backdrop with buildings and scenery. Lighting in the steam/dismal transition era was usually lit with green metal light shades with incandescent lamps. I don't think the Sodium yellow lights or mercury vapor green types were in use until the 60's. I just purchase some of the green shaded incandescent types made with SLEDs from an ebay company found at "we honest HO goose neck lamps". Haven't installed any yet but they look really good. They advert them as white light. I haven't had a chance to try them yet but if I don't like the color, I think I can change them slightly with yellow/orange tint to make them look more like incandescent lamps. They have pole mounted ones, a couple of different wall mount styles and some that are overhead hung.

If you want to put a power line over to the turntable, why not run it from the round house to the turntable. Your could run it from the left corner of the round house, out to the turntable.. That would have been how they might have done it back then......

Another great video! I am learning a lot as I use Trainz Surveyor to attempt a computer layout that at least duplicates your track plan. The available scenery items and the way ground based details are added (plus my lack of artistic ability) means I come nowhere close to the scenery detail of your layout, but at least I will be able to run trains in the computer simulation on the same track plan, and with a building, bridge, or tunnel of some design where your's are. I trust you don't object to my copying your layout. Happy New Year! I always look forward to your videos. I have no complaints about the length of any of them.

Can you bypass the "no track area" wiring and put a DCC auto-reverser instead so it doesn't lose power when turning? Or has Walthers removed power completely from a section of the pit? Would a keep-alive circuit under the bridge be an option? (assuming you care that it loses power enough to mess with it some more). It's been great watching your recent videos, you really see the good, bad and ugly of that turntable!

Where do you buy the majority of your scenic materials? Especially the Heki products? You do really great work, BTW. You should get yourself a tripod or a mechanical arm you can attach the video camera to so you can have use of both hands when you need them. Your photography work at the end is commendable also. The lighting turned out well, though they'd have probably killed to have such "white" light back in 1957! For aesthetics, you might consider warmer bulbs/LED's.

Most, but not all, of my scenic items are from Scenic Express. They do carry the Heki products I like. I agree on the light color- but it is what I had at the time and I didn't feel like waiting for more yellowish LEDs. I have some warm white types on the way for future use.

Looking very good👍 When you use outdoor dirt or sand products do you find it takes a lot of cleaning the rails to get them clean enough you don’t hear any grit on the wheels? I use sand for ballast and find it quite hard to keep the switch points clean and rails clean as well.

You know that the union requires the railroad to provide a water cooler for the shop personal, so if you don't want any trouble, I'd put a water cooler along with the lockers and desk.
