The chains are mainly there to limit the height of the table and keep tension on the rubber band. If they weren't there, the rubber band would pull the one piece of wood to the same height as the other one, lifting the table even higher, and at that point the band would no longer have tension, causing the whole thing to fall.

The table is not an illusion. The chains on the tensegrity table are not there for illusion. They are a part of the balance between tension and compression in the table. The middle cord is not what solely holds the weight. The chains are part. The table is in a constant balance between tension and compression from all sides, that's why it stands. This balance is created by the middle cord and the chains. They aren't there to sell an illusion. They all carry the weight .

It is an illusion, though. It looks like the chains are somehow supporting the weight of the top plate but that's impossible. The perceived behaviour is different to the expected behaviour, so it's a type of illusion.

The illusion might be "this appears as if it should fall" or it might be "this makes it seem as through chain is somehow maintaining its shape despite being in compression" - either ways, for most people seeing tensegrity for the first time it does seem to behave in ways that require trickery. That's pretty much the definition of an illusion.

I've had an idea to make something similar to that Parallax View app, but for the New 3DS! It has face tracking with its "Super Stable 3D" feature, the challenge would be creating a homebrew app that can read it out (which should be possible because a calibration feature in the settings app does that), and rendering a stereoscopic 3D image following that face tracking in real time.. With the stereoscopic 3D screen, it would be an even more convincing effect!

The app is similar to the HTC Evo 3D. It was a phone with a stereoscopic screen. I had it and though somewhat gimmicky due to the eras limits for mobile features, it took some amazing photos. The downside is you could only see the stereoscopic effect on other lioe devices

chain is very much necessary and not part of the illusion. without the chains the top half would trip over. the chains keep the opposing tension the elastic band creates. equal and opposite forces. and that's what keeeps it in balance floating like that.
