Will the shoe fit? I am trying on my shoes for the first time and I also make a set of sock liners from cork and canvas to go inside the shoes. I hope you enjoy the video, which is the last in this series on Easy Shoemaking.

Hello and Congratulation with your very nice shoes. It has been a joy to follow this 7 videos. I am new in the leather work, so it is so great to see someone that enjoy and show the work. I made some belt in the start of the 2000, and dream of taking up the leather work again. I ordered some leather, and tool and look forward to start. It will be great to have your videos to look at. I wish you a nice 2021, and hope it will be a safe and good year. Best wishes from Jan in Norway

OLD LEATHER SMITH here, amazing what a little leverage does, now that you R A full fledged CORDWAINER I have a suggestion, instead of canvas I would use pig skin, hair or skin side down, it will stand up better than canvas, my personal preference is wool felt instead of cork, if U would like some I would B happy 2 send U some, GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

It does seem rather amazing that you can make as many shoes as you like now, without ever having to "put up with" some manufacturer's idea of what's going to be on your feet. Being able to adapt your environment in this way is true freedom. No wonder you look and feel delighted.

I never took an interest in shoe/boot making until recently. Your skill level and approach seems to make boot making possible. I have flat, narrow feet and pronated ankles. Hard to find any kind of shoes that feel great. The only boots I ever bought that were "perfect" were a pair of 6" top Lowa Scouts (Austrian made) purchased back in 1973 for back packing in the Grand Canyon. They had Vibram soles and the soles were unbendable. They had zero flex and I could hop from rock to rock and never slip, plenty of ankle support. I believe they had several layers of full grain leather and a metal shank plus the Vibram sole to build the stiffness. Would love to duplicate those boots as I've never found any boots to match those for comfort and performance. They sort of disappeared for a few years, but later discovered my son had been wearing them daily until they fell apart. Oh well...!

I suspect I would need to make a few pairs before being totally confident about changing foot shapes etc, but I am looking at making a few changes now. It's a very interesting journey....had to laugh about your boots resurfacing!!

Thanks Harry. So much fun to watch and packed full of useful tips, as usual. Can I ask which pair of shoes you feel are most comfortable? I make clothes for myself to wear and I find that the most comfortable are always the ones where I have altered the pattern precisely to fit me, rather than following standard size. I know factory lasts can be altered with leather to improve fit, but I had a perception that your home - made last shoes, fitted better? I think both pairs are awesome, either way.
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa..thanks...I think my factory last is more geared to formal shoes so I may try and adapt it a bit...the upper section and waist is good but the toe box is too long for my preference. My own last is pretty comfortable though a bit generous in the toe, surprisingly I got the waist area pretty good....a blend of the two lasts would be just perfect for me.
@Lisa-zt9jr
@Lisa-zt9jr 3 жыл бұрын
@@harryrogers Ah, there's another challenge for you then Harry! Do you reduce the toe length on the standard last, or make your home made last less generous in the toe, or start afresh in order to keep your reference? I have bought a number of old wooden lasts which I intend to adapt. Wood working skills appeal less to me though! I challenged myself a year or so ago to making a pair of cowboy boots after I bought a leather patching machine. I am currently getting up my confidence learning. With your leatherworking skills maybe a flamboyant pair of cowboy boots appeals to you?!

I liked it very much to watch this series! I would be interested what exact tools you were using during the past two shoemaking series and what types of leather you have used. Also, from the fitment-perspective, how well do the self-made last shoes compare to the professional-lasted shoes?
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 3 жыл бұрын
To get the fit perfect I would need to adjust the last a little, I am beginning to feel I could do that. I think one needs to remind oneself that I have only made a couple of pairs, and people devote lifetimes to learning these crafts so I am a rank amateur compared to them....but hey the satisfaction of making your own is great, and I can see why bespoke shoes have to cost what they do. The simple shoes require very few tools...for the first series ...bespoke...I use a multitude of tools!
