MS ESTONIA - Onboard video camera footage from 1994

The MS Estonia was a cruiseferry built in 1980 for the Finnish company Rederi Ab Sally by Meyer Werft, in Papenburg, West Germany. She was employed on ferry routes between Finland and Sweden by various companies (first Viking Line, then EffJohn) until 1993, when she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn-Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives.

I have seen a lot of videos about the Estonia online - mainly documentaries that feature reenactments of the tragedy. This is the first time I have ever seen real footage of life onboard the ferry before her sinking. It feels surreal to see it and imagine what actually happened in them when the disaster occurred. R.I.P. to all the victims, and God bless the survivors.

Remarkable video footage and it's easy to see that she was a "floating motel" rather than a high-end ship. The staircase at 20:42 must have been a nightmare to climb up during the sinking, with lots of people, darkness, panic, a heavy list to the side and the ship rocking and swaying underneath... 🙄

​​​@@louise_roselol I've been on a similar kind of ship when I was in Finland and it has those types of halls and stairs, once it was really stormy and the ship was rocking a lot and even then I had hard time going up the stairs with little rocking so I can't imagine how they felt struggling to climb the stairs as it was listing hard

When the 30th anniversary of the accident is nearing many memories resurface. How I woke up in the morning to the radio news so horrible I first thought I must be dreaming. How I saw the helicopters land at the hospital in Turku as I was working near by at the time. How I jogged to the harbour in the evening to see a similar kind of ferry to grasp the magnitude of the disaster. How I remembered that I had been on board on Estonia earlier, perhaps several times, when it was still Viking Sally travelling between Turku and Stockholm..

It is a shame that the early 1990's video quality is so poor. I remember one Estonia sinking survivor telling that they used a video game arcade cabinet to save themselves from a trap and as a video game enthusiast I of course wondered which game it was that saved their life. But the survivor didn't tell more details and here we see some games but the video is too blurry to know which games were onboard. Anyway the video is very interesting to watch, thanks for the upload. 😊

The loss of the Estonia had to been terrible even for those who were in support roles on the landside on a daily basis They knew crew members and interacted with them every day. Estonia was a fine lady and had a hardworking crew. These tragedies are so hard. I just don't understand why things like this happen in this life.

The final report from the original, official MS Estonian disaster investigation committee stated that the ship sank due to design flaws: The bow visor fasteners were too weak and sheared off due to the impact of large waves in stormy seas; the vehicle ramp was connected to this visor.

AFAIK the hinges weren't the issue, it was the bow visor's locking mechanism combined with the way the vehicle ramp interlocked with the bow visor when opening/closing

This is both eerie and very sad. Such beautiful cruise/ferry ship 5 months following the footage will be lying at the bottom of the Sea. The shops, restaurants, everything bottom of the Baltic Sea. What’s worse is that you’d find a mass grave if you dive and visit this ship as it is full of corpses of those poor victims. Can’t imagine how the divers feel when they visit the wreck. Also interesting how this is vintage as it’s a stereotypical ship in the 90s. You’d find toys, cassettes, and cars from the 90s.

It depends, as have worked myself on a ship we had 2 weeks sifts, means you work 2 weeks and 2 weeks brake. The question is was this crew on duty that night or were they off that actually most these people you see could be lucky to be alive. I just recognised one person on this video that worked later on another ship with me.
