Any person who blamed Lindan didn't realize that he is 35 years old but his opponent is only 22. This is critical. He can't use the same strategy as playing with Lee Chong Wei. It's stupid trying to overwhelm his young rival by speed or power. Lindan's advantages are his techniques and experiences. Utilize these advantages and save stamina as much as possible. It's the only way to win this game and Lindan followed it. He lost the 3rd round so easily may due to fatigue. Again, it's the consequence of elder age. He is just defeated by time. On the other hand, Shi Yuqi played really well and left little opportunity to Lindan. Congratulations to him~

@Beaute Loom Inconsistent does not equal to lousy. Son WH may not qualified as among the greatest badminton players but he is definitely not lousy. In fact I consider him to be more consistent than some of the top players. That was why he could beat some top players when they were not in form and able to gather enough ranking points to reach BWF No.1 position even though it was for a short period.

@Ying Momota and Axelsen are both world champions... so your minimum for lousy is basically top 5 in the world or less. Maybe you need to redefine what lousy means, because there are plenty of professional badminton players who are not top 5.

While it's only natural for LD to lose to an opponent 12 years younger after such a long tournament there are certain tactical plays that are suspicious to me. At 1:19:57 why lift back to Shi's forehand side? Even if the shot were full length Shi is perfectly in position to continue attacking, no surprise the half court lift got put down. Nothing to do with fatigue either - shot doesn't make tactical sense in any context. The way LD plays now it's very hard to tell whether he's actually making low quality shots from fatigue or if he's purposely giving the opponent slight opportunities that make it look like he's getting beat. Congrats to him for making the final in any case, always the GOAT

You cannot deny that as the age of LD increases day by day, it is really hard for him to catch up when he cannot get the championship in two games. And it is not surprising that LD cannot hold on anymore because he had already given out nearly all the strength he got that day. So plz don't always believe that it must be fake just because LD loses one game, it is unfair to others, and there is no law or rule says that LD must be the champion, in relatively recent future, he will retire, as well as Lee. Stop saying LD lost because he's older. Lee Chong Wei beat SYQ convincingly in the 2017 All England Final, just one year before this, and he's pretty much the same age as LD is in this match. And yet LD beat LCW earlier in this tournament. LD in this play style is extremely uninspired and honestly ticks me off a little knowing how good he was in his prime, and yet LCW somehow still can't beat him.

Lcw went all out attacking, smashing non stop. Lin Dan played it wisely by controlling and playing 4 corners to exhaust his opponent. Different tactic and strategies applied by these 2 . When lcw play against Lin Dan , he has simply no way to penetrate lin Dan line of defence. Often you see lin Dan just play his shorts casually to score points, but if u look at lcw most of his points came from his attacking play. As lin Dan grows older he switched his tactic become a master of mind reading and shots control player, while lcw still remain his strategy since 2010 . This is what making lin Dan so much better than lcw. Lin Dan can play attacking game if he needs to or only if he has to.

There is no point to play fake in the final. LD can't concentrate at the beginning of third game due fatigue from second game. He show that in other championships too (Asia Championship 2017 vs Chen Long). Both players has too much to lose on personal level. SYQ need to proof he the upcoming favorite. LD would certainly want to make history for himself, he need that to continue his money making star power. Normal fake Chinese games are like this, they settle by first game, whoever win the first game will win second game to save energy on subsequent matches.

If anything LCW and Lin Dan were playing more on a levelled field, whereas the latter was severely disadvantaged when his opponent during the finals was someone much younger than himself. With an age gap of 12 years apart, what does that tell you again?

Lucius Inspiration In terms of skills, undeniably Lin Dan was better, but that doesn't necessarily translate into effective play. An effective play is a combination of skills, fitness both mentally and physically and strategy, and oftentimes strategy is a byproduct of the two former factors. I think it's utterly unfair to expect Lin Dan to be able to keep his speed at his age. If it was Lin Dan 10 years ago, I don't think he would have any problem playing 5 matches in a row and still winning the title at the end. But the fact that he's 34 this year tells you it's physically demanding for him to play against someone who's 12 years younger. If he was to play against Shi Yuqi in the first round of the tournament, I don't think Shi stood a chance. But he played 4 matches before facing Shi, and what's more, he played against another much younger person during the semis. It's just foolish to assume that Lin Dan could still play like he did in the past when he's this old. World Championship 2017 is the best example if you aren't convinced. If anything, I'll say that Lin Dan applied the wrong strategy against Shi. He played too many long rallies, which worked against him. He couldn't even compete with Shi in terms of speed, let alone saving enough energy to smash. It really is about fitness level and avoiding injuries.
