Bulumko Mbete, was born in South Africa in 1995. Working and residing in Joburg , Mbete is interested in materiality; through using textile, beading, and weaving; she creates a framework to communicate generational traditions and gestures of love. Her interests expand into ways of engaging with the archive and story-telling creatively.
Engaging with the South African archive requires creative storytelling and Mbete uses textiles to explore the geographic connections and synchronicities within her family in relation to South African history; and its effect on migration, labor, farming, and love. Her artworks and broader body of work stem from reflecting on the iconography of textiles brought to South Africa through settler colonialism and how it gets reconstructed and assimilated into our local practices.
