Toshiko Akiyoshi was one of the very first Japanese students to come to the United States and study at Berklee School (now Berklee College) of Music in Boston in the 1950's along with another Japanese male student and a saxophone player, Sadao Watanabe. We're so lucky and blessed that we still have both of them with us today!! When Toshiko and her famly were relocated from Manchuria to Kyushu region in Japan after the World War II in 1945, she started playing mainstream jazz which was bebop at that time for a living, then the one and only Oscar Peterson who had happpned to come to Japan and had a chance to listen to Toshiko play, Oscar was so impressed by Toshiko's performance, and encouraged her to come to the States to formally study Jazz so Toshiko's music will be the Sun to shine people who needs it beyond race. That's what Jazz was to them, and I believe all of us.
