@@gld1010 Funding is less the issue as that just requires a good project proposal to the right people. Even a proof of concept that is a one off can get a green light. Also while it would certainly be more expensive than current civilian helicopters on the market, on a very rough estimate of what would go into one I don't actually see this being much more expensive than the average military helicopter or fighter jet, and plenty of those are made every year. The challenge here is more the materials you mentioned. The wings need to be ultra light and ultra strong to survive that kind of motion. We have possible materials that could maybe be crafted into the wings needed, but nothing that's been tested on this kind of structure to my current knowledge. actually I think the bigger hold back is just the efficiency of the design. You're average helicopter is probably more efficient in relation to it's performance and how much energy is put into it (single spinning set of blades vs 8 individually powered wings). This would never hit wide scale market because helicopters exist and would simply be easier to make use of. However, don't write off some aerospace engineer making a 1:1. Practicality is not an impassible barrier, in fact people make incredibly impractical things all the time because it's fun, or just to prove it can be done. And with the more widespread knowledge granted by the internet (be it a blessing and a curse), and ever expanding sciences, it could be anyone. Maybe only 1 will ever be made, maybe several. In a big lab or somebodies barn. Maybe its a hundred years out, or 10. "will not happen" has been proven wrong plenty of times, especially in the aerospace field.

It would be really cool if the Ornithopter was ever developed but I don't see since it would cheaper in both materials and energy to have Thrust vectoring and smaller micro thrusters for the same agility.

It can neither autorotate nor glide, which means that in an emergency it becomes a brick. It's exotic enough to be in scifi and pretty to look at, but it will never be a real thing.

While a real one would not be built the same way it is in the movies for technical reason, an ornithopter is indeed possible. Dragonfly style flight is the most efficient and precise kind of aerial movements nature has ever produced, it is backed with hundreds of millions of years of evolution. Most people who criticize such way of flying are generally unaware of the actual movement needed to fly like a dragonfly. It is not doing constantly « up down » like in the movie. At full potential it can do everything any helicopters can do but better and even fonction like a plane if needed. This technology is also already into the « design testing » phase, with small drones. Tho dont expect it to come for larger vehicles anytime soon.

I understand that you can't really build that thing in 1:1 because of various problems, but I wonder if you could build it in the scale of an actual dragonfly? As a reconnaissance drone this thing would be great because of how it could theoretically move horizontally in all directions without altering its pitch or roll angle. It should therefore be way more agile than any other drone. Also, I heard it's more efficient and the gliding mechanism could really prove itself for long distances.
