MSI RMA rejected this card due to cracked board.
Well, if they designed it a bit better, maybe it would not have happened but since it did, i had to fix it and here is how i did it.

Still, he mostly keeps doing higher-end mainstream or high-end GPUs, quite possibly due to those cards being expensive, making the repair worthwhile. I imagine most low-end GPUs truly aren´t worth the hassle.

@@Morpheus-pt3wq yes and no. I've seen many repair channels which ditching cracks in pcbs and rebolling cores stating no fix even on 4090s it's to much time consuming that's why they don't want to do it. They prefer to replace capacitors in few cards and have same money but reduce fix time to half. Anyway good that we still have people like them that really are there to help when rma failed.

At this point it is better to use vertical mount because graphic cards are beefy and heavy. Weighs around 2 - 2.5 kg. Vertical mounting removes stress on the pcie slot and all of the weight is handled by the IO plate which is strong compared to the PCB. It also removes stress on the motherboard slot.
@Universal-Dilettant
@Universal-Dilettant 5 күн бұрын
Vertical mounting isn't actually necessary. 🤨 Reasonable support alone is enough for a long and stress-free GPU life. Compared to the cost of a GPU, the financial outlay is downright ridiculous. My last ASUS TUF GPUs (4070Ti, 4070TiS) even came with a kind of adjustable pen that can also be used as a screwdriver, ... 😋 I would also always recommend using cards with higher build quality. On my 4080S Gaming X-Trio, for example, even the frame for the fans is made of metal. 😉 This brick will never bend, but of course it also needs support to protect the slot. Anyway, ... 🤫 simply support it! ... support it! ... support it!

Regarding intermittent short circuit: 1. Capacitors charging: When you measure continuity, capacitors in the circuit might be discharged. Initially, they can behave like a short circuit, but as they charge, the resistance increases and the "short" disappears. 2. Semiconductor components: Diodes, transistors, or other semiconductor components may present very low resistance under certain conditions, depending on bias or a possible residual charge. After some time, this resistance can normalize. 3. Component heating: Some intermittent faults in components can occur due to heating, causing a short to be detected initially and then disappear after the circuit stabilizes.

My best guess is that heating breaks down an oxide layer in the capacitors creating a channel for DC current and injecting voltage re-forms that oxide layer which closes the channel.

Ceramic caps will age over time and to restore them, some manufacturers recommend "baking" the board at 150C for 30min. They will be new after that. Not sure if that process is happening but it is the only type of capacitor that has this type of change. Others when failed need replacing.

Capacitor:- if it has become fully discharged, when it starts to accept a charge again it creates resistance as it charges back up. Similar to how rechargeable batteries will not charge in normal circuit, yet if you bypass the charging circuit they will start to accept a charge again. (Battery operated power tools common issue) This is also a sign of component starting to fail. If they designed the PCIE slot correctly and you did not need a tab to hold the component in a slot. There would be no need for the stupid tab.

@Universal-Dilettant
@Universal-Dilettant 5 күн бұрын
Even though the conductor tracks are wide, the layers are very thin and the cross-section is correspondingly very small. So appearances can be deceiving. Tony also uses thicker wire from time to time if he thinks it is necessary.

What about 4080 supers with 3 Fan design ? They have the same problems with repairs? I only buy Zotac Edition because they have 5 year guarantee and i never make unvolted cards or overclock them. For the 4070 ti super TUF Asus Edition is the best for noise and Temperature. But only 2 years guarantee is not enough. So i never had massive problems with Zotac.

The number of fans and the resulting length of the card is completely irrelevant with this type of destruction. The stupidity of the users (sometimes even that of the PC builder), however, is the decisive factor. 😉 And again my mantra-like advice: simply support it ... support it ... support it ...

A shorted capacitor just burns, it doesn't "turn back to the capacitor again". When Sorin is lazy and doesn't want to remove the phone's PCB to search for a shorted capacitor on the other side of a board he just increases the current while injecting voltage until the capacitor burns. Of course, you have to be relatively sure it's a capacitor and not a MOSFET or something else. You would have known that if you had prepared better for Sorin's impersonations :-)

Been watching your vids for a few weeks now. Fascinating stuff. My only gripe is your testing methods. I do not mean your troubleshooting, though there are times I think you are jumping to conclusions before having any solid evidence and thus end up costing yourself a lot of unnecessary time. I mean using Furmark and things like Unigine Heaven or 3dMark at low resolution. Furmark is great at heating up a GPU and wasting power, but its not actually working the card very hard. When you run Heaven in a tiny window, you are putting zero load on the GPU and are completely CPU bound. Given the abysmal frame rates you show even in the tiny windows tells me you are using a very old CPU that cannot feed a modern GPU. You cannot properly load test something like a 3090 or 4090 with a low power CPU. By today's standards you should have at very least a high clocking 12th gen. You should not let these repairs out the door without properly testing the card in both games and workstation GPGPU/encode loads that actually move data around in memory and swamp the warps.

It's a lot better visually/design-wise, but from the comparison-reviews I found, it's also one of the worst board-partner coolers out there...like 10°C hotter than more conventional partner-cards. I think it's even worse than the FE's cooler. I also wonder how much these larger cards weigh and how people manage to crack the PCBs like that. I just sold a GB 4070 Gaming OC which weighs 1.5 kilos - which I find quite insane already for a graphics card. I never ran it with a support - because it didn't ship with one. It never showed any sag over 12 months of usage and when I took it out of the PC to ship it to the new owner, the PCIe connectors and that little "hook" down there looked brand new and totally fine. Do 4080s and 4090s weigh 5 kilos or something? Oh, and BTW: Your videos with all those cracked 4xxx-series cards made me go and grab an aftermarket support from Coolermaster - ain't paranoia wonderful? ;)
@tourmaline07
@tourmaline07 5 күн бұрын
Personally not a fan of MSIs take , I think it looks worse than the FE cooler , with the rounded edges making it look a bit bulbous. I'd have liked a similar approach to the Sapphire Pulse Vega 56 but with the second fan on the rear rather than the front.
@tourmaline07
@tourmaline07 5 күн бұрын
p.s these cards need supports now , they are far too big and unwieldy to just support via the slot and case brackets IMHO. My Suprim X 4080 Super weighs 2kg and comes with the support stand which I use. Not complaining about the weight, I quite like a quiet videocard and all that bare metal is cool to look at 😂
@1SaG
@1SaG 5 күн бұрын
@@tourmaline07 I'm not sure I'd want to *own* the MSI either, but I do like the fact that the design is ... different. And a bit more grown up than a lot of the other coolers out there (looking at you, Inno3D iChill, KFA/Galax Gamer, etc). And I absolutely agree that folks should use the support/brace if their card comes with one - heck, my new card "only" weighs 1.5 kg again, but I'm still glad I spent 17 EUR on that aftermarket support. Still: I do wonder if user-error plays a role here with those cracks. Even if you don't drop the PC or transport it/ship it with the card installed: These cards have become more and more difficult to insert (size/bulk of the coolers, relatively thick heat-spreaders on motherboards all around the PCIe-slot, etc) ... I don't take apart/put together PCs on a daily basis, so I was reminded of that increased difficulty once again when I swapped my old card out for the new one. Used to be a lot easier when boards and cards weren't as "built-up" and bulky as most of them are these days.
