MSI PS42/Modern 14 A Series SSD & RAM Upgrade Tutorial

- Any damage caused during this upgrade might void the warranty.
- Check the spec from where you purchased the notebook.
- This video is applied to MSI PS42 and Modern 14 A Series.
"Reset EC" is to cut-off the power from the battery to avoid any damage from the short-circle.
After all the upgrade processes, you need to plug in the AC power adapter to power on the notebook because the battery power is cut-off by "Reset EC".

For anyone upgrading the ssd, keep notice that the pcie port is in the 2.0 x4 standard so there is no point in buying something really fast. The port is limited to 2Gb/s and remember to pick a ssd in x4. The original kingstone 240gb, although rated for 2Gb/s it is in the pcie 3.0 x2 standard and is limited to half the speed in this laptop.

It is NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4. For all PS42 variants. At least, this what the MSI site says, and what I see on my machine.

@@gregpeterson3144 can you post the link to the MSI site? I couldn't find any info on that and I'm sure i have 2.0 ports, checked it with software and it explains slow drive speed. The only 3.0 port is reserved for graphics card

In this video, we use the Modern 14 A10M, a UMA model which is only equipped with Intel graphics. We cannot add a dGPU on it manually.

@@MFLAB fast forward to2023 , now laptop GPU can be upgraded via Riser card that Pciex1 type although you will lose 35% bandwidth but still you can upgrade the laptop GPU , have the same model, I removed the one fan and installed MXM gtx 860m to pcie x1 via that m.2 slot , added an HDD , I do not like the SSD to be honest.

I replaced the RAM from 8GB to 16GB. Maybe I messed up with cable connections, but when I put back everything and turned on, keyboard backlight is on but the screen is still blackout.

You need to check all the cables, especially the cable at 2:49 because it seems to connect to the panel.

You should be able to upgrade the SSD but the supported SSD should ask the manufacturer or check on their web.
