I love Anne Dudek. She conveys so much in that scene with her eyes and body language. I like when she tells Betty she thought she'd know what to do and Betty says "Why me?" and she answers "I don't know." She realizes all at once how clueless Betty is.

Betty was far from clueless here. She knew and January Jones conveyed that massive denial effectively. Don’s extramarital affairs were the worst kept secret in the neighborhood. It’s exactly her friend came to her, but both of them in that moment decided not to acknowledge the truth.

This show is so good. Carlton cheats on Francine and that gives us a chance not only to see how Betty is naive and does not consider that husbands do cheat, but also that her best friend knows more about her husband than she does and misunderstood Betty’s life and marriage dynamic. No surprise Betty needed a therapist and shot down the neighbour’s pidgeons. Don Draper is lucky to be alive.
@briantuma1502
@briantuma1502 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think she’s naive. She can’t admit Don cheats because it would ruin her facade of being the perfect housewife with the perfect marriage.
@francescotamburini5790
@francescotamburini5790 3 жыл бұрын
@@briantuma1502 I think it’s evident from her connection with Glen in season 1 that at this time she is emotionally immature, a bit like a child. She doesn’t know that people hurt each other, and that’s why she’s so crushed and angry when she finds Don is cheating with Bobby Barrett. It’s not like Don, who knows he’s cheating and knows he’s unhappy but he can’t admit that about himself because he’s bought in the white, suburban family life and doesn’t want to lose it. Don knows that that’s not the only possible life, and that people hurt each other, while I think Betty doesn’t yet. It’s only from her marriage with Henry that she starts seeing that being a wife does not make her happy and becomes more cynical (she cheats on Henry with Don!!!).
@briantuma1502
@briantuma1502 3 жыл бұрын
@@francescotamburini5790 I don’t think her relationship with Glenn was all that innocent. It was quite toxic. She gave him a lock of her hair. Ewwww Also, she knew how to be a manipulative jerk as her treatment of Carla their housekeeper shows. I think it’s great we can have different interpretations of Betty. It attests to the great writing.
@animalfinatic9366

To be honest, I truly don't think Betty is completely an awful person. It is clear at times she is caring and wise, it's just most of the awful things she does stem from her own situations.
@shanehughes3511
@shanehughes3511 4 жыл бұрын
She is deeply unhappy. Her mother conditioned her to be a subservient woman to a man So she felt obliged to be a woman who was a doting wife worried only about her appearance. But she was unhappy wiry that life but couldn't escape it as she believed it was best for her and her future. Only time she was ever happy was when she was a model. If Don never made her his wife and she continued in her career she may have been a better and happier person
@marishkaspirit
@marishkaspirit 4 жыл бұрын
@@shanehughes3511 if Don wouldn't have made her his wife, she would have married another man and continue same story. Even more proof of that is when she remarries and repeats the same narrative all over again. Her mother conditioned her to believe that her ultimate role is to be a thropy wife, and only nearly at the end of her life after 2 failed marriages and a changing world around her, she realized what truly made her happy. That's why she went back to studies. But it was too late by then. She wasted too much time stuck in her old believes. It took many years to get out of that mentality. It didn't matter that it was Don, or the second husband. It was the same issue.
@stonem0013
@stonem0013 4 жыл бұрын
@@marishkaspirit not exactly true - she was happier with Henry than Don, since Henry is a kinder and more mature man, and Don is a selfish and deceptive narcissist who made all his women miserable.

@@nickoliver3523 Not by the ending tho. When she decided to go back to school, everyone thought she was trying to hit the 'reset button'. Yet when she gets her diagnosis and knows she is going to die, she still goes to school. Francis asks her "Betty, why are you doing this" and she replies "Why was I ever doing it?", we realise that she may have been wiser than everyone thought. She made a big leap in terms of maturity and wiseness in that lat season.

My mom knew of a lady who never left home. She lived with her mother until her mother died at the age of 90-something, making her 70-something when she was first on her own. She was totally helpless. It's wise to have a skill set that will pay the bills regardless of your circumstances. Maybe your marriage is bliss, but your husband could die unexpectedly. Even if you don't have to work, be ABLE to.

Honestly it surprises me that people are perpetually surprised and even devastated when they find their partners cheating on them. Look at yourself in the mirror first and ask yourself, would I sleep with this hag/ hog? If the answer is no, then it's a damn good bet your partner is sleeping or fantasising about sleeping with someone else. As for me, I'd I turn into an unpleasant hog one day, I wouldn't be surprised if my partner sleeps around.
@Sam-nz3vj
@Sam-nz3vj 3 жыл бұрын
She wasn’t an unpleasant hog? She just had a baby and she was a mess in this scene because she just found out her husband was cheating on her. She was shown to be the typical 50’s-60’s housewife, and even if she wasn’t she doesn’t deserve to get treated like that.

@aaraar4055 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sam-nz3vj yes I know all that and I wasn't calling her a hag or hog. Making a general statement to the effect that, man or woman have a duty to make themselves attractive to eachother. When you take your spouse for granted, they're bound to stray. As a man if I don't keep my wife happy, I shouldn't complain if she finds someone who does.
