Infact I like those Reel to Reel players. Back in 1987 when I was 13, a friend of mine invited me to his party and he had a Reel to Reel. I was astonished! I thought it was a computer. And the sound clarity, perfect. I was given a reel to reel player in 2013 but I donated it to a friend.

Lucky guess! I once worked on an old VCR from the mid 80s that recorded and played back in black and white from tapes, but passed cable signals thru in color. It was weird, but the same cause applied: old thick brown flux that was caked up on the board. A few wipes with alcohol, and presto! Color was restored. Sometimes it's the simplest things that can cause the weirdest problems.

I know this video is old but great work!!! I have the Gx-260D with the blue meters and that counter belt is HORRIBLE! to service compared to the several other machines I have. Is it still playing well? I find that at 3-3/4ips (9.5 cm/s) that the Gx-260d, 265d, Revox A700, A-77, Philips N4520, and Akai gx-747 are leaders! Keep reelin!

Most motorboating issues are related to record /playback switch. I suggest you spray some switch cleaner into it . Nice to see it's working !
@johnstark53248 жыл бұрын
Hey Maddi, the thinner belt will last as long as the thicker one, some decks I have put the thinner belts showed less wow and flutter believe it or not! Most likely there was metal stuck in the flux, sometimes happens from wicks. If the tape rubs on the reel you took the table off on you might be able to get at the screws from the side, hate to have to see you take the face off again! I thought it had to be something with the work done, never thought it was switches, glad to see you did get the caps in right!
@MsMadLemon8 жыл бұрын
Hey John, I'm actually not having any trouble with the belt installed, no wow and flutter. It seems that someone's already been inside here at some point and replaced. But I have the thin one as a spare now :o) When putting it back together, I took special care when re-assembling this thing, reels play fine, there's no rubbing, the only thing left to do is the transistors and calibration. The switches may have sorted out the issues which I was having before opening this up. Things that didn't work before are working now, one of them being the auto reverse and it now records in reverse mode.

So it was flux residue on the board that caused the motorboating? Flux can become conductive if it absorbs water from the air for a long period of time. Good job fixing that! That was definitely a "weird problem"!
@godfreypoon51488 жыл бұрын
Sometimes even without absorbing water, in the case of several newer types! Not handy at all. I didn't even think of this one. Shame on me, because it has caught me out a few times!
@MsMadLemon8 жыл бұрын
I didn't either because I've always been told by people that flux is not conductive, it can not be the flux. Yet over time read from three different sources that it is possible for it to decrease resistance between pins. This flux mystery! maybe it affects sensitive components such as transistors more.

Conductive flux residue??? Sometimes it's the simple, odd issue's we don't think of, and that catch us out. Very happy to see you got it fixed, nice one.
@MsMadLemon8 жыл бұрын
I think it may depend on the type of flux, there are apparently a few types from what i've read. The people from the tapeheads kept pushing me to clean switches, with regards to the cause of the issue being something simple, they were right, it was a similar issue. And thanks! i'm so relieved to have this fixed!

I have an Akai Gx260 device sometimes that does not respond to the operating command and when checking the voltage connected to the electromagnet the pickup responsible for it, I found a reading of the voltage zero when it does not respond and when the voltage responds it is 24v What is the reason in your opinion

For the hard to get loose screws. Set screw driver in the screw and tap on the end of the screw driver a few times with hammer.

Is that one of those nasty RIFFA capacitors (they have a clear plastic casing) just below what looks like the recording switch on the pcb board that you cleaned off the flux residue.... I have seen Dave Jones touch on this topic and replaced them with MPK capacitors... Apparently they are even worse than electrolytics...

Up to part 4 now, but first: I love your orange fan in the background! And question time: What's the music on the tape? First thought was 'Music Sounds Better With You' by Stardust, but it's not!

Hi, I have a problem with my gx 260d, one of the channels is playing very low in relation to the filter, the technician made an adjustment and the problem changed sides, I read in other blogs but from other models that it may be a transistor problem, if you can help me with this problem and find the cause
