Deriving the Formula for Area of a Regular Hexagon

Tell your students this is something that may be useful in the workforce. I'm machining a retaining nut out of 2.5" stainless steel. The blueprint I was given dimensions the nut at 1.750" across the flats. I need to find the diameter of the hexagon across the vertices, because that's the diameter I need to turn the material down to in order to be able to cut the flats with an end mill in one cut. Your method of derivation reminded me of breaking the hex down into an equilateral triangle, finding the height of the bisected equilateral triangle which is also called the apothem, which is one half of the dimension I was given. From there you realize the diameter from vertex to vertex is double the length of the hypotension of the bisected equilateral triangle. Thank you so much!

(2:44) - Altitude bisects angle? : Isn't that ONLY true because the triangle is isosceles (really equilateral) along the two legs that attach to the 'side'? if the triangle was scaler the altitude would not bisect the angle in question.
